Peyton Manning calls report of 2011 HGH use “complete garbage”

Getty Images

The week began with Peyton Manning calling a report about his reluctance to be a backup to Brock Osweiler “bullsh-t and insulting.” It’s ending with a strong reaction to a report about far more important matters.

Via Huffington Post, Al Jazeera America reports that an Indianapolis drug ring supplied Manning with HGH in 2011, as he was recovering from multiple neck surgeries while still with the Colts.

“The allegation that I would do something like that is complete garbage and is totally made up,” Peyton Manning said in a personal statement that was provided to PFT by the Broncos.  “It never happened.  Never.  I really can’t believe somebody would put something like this on the air.  Whoever said this is making stuff up.”

The allegation comes in a documentary dubbed The Dark Side, in which British hurdler Liam Collins went undercover “to expose the widespread nature of performance-enhancing drugs in global sports.” The documentary raises questions about many players, including Manning.

In the movie, a pharmacist who worked at the the Guyer Institute in Indianapolis tells Collins (who recorded video and audio secretly) that HGH was regularly sent to Manning’s wife, Ashley, during his recovery more than four years ago.

“All the time we would be sending Ashley Manning drugs,” says Charlie Sly to Collins. “Like growth hormone, all the time, everywhere, Florida. And it would never be under Peyton’s name, it would always be under her name.”

Manning’s agent (who isn’t named but is presumably Tom Condon of CAA) previously denied the allegation.

Peyton “has never done what this person is suggesting,” the agent told Al Jazeera. “The treatment he received at the Guyer Institute was provided on the advice of his physician and with the knowledge of team doctors and trainers. . . . Any medical treatment received by Ashley is a private matter of hers, her doctor, and her family.”

In 2011, HGH was on the NFL’s list of banned substances. However, the league and the NFL Players Association had not yet agreed on a testing procedure. So players were essentially on the honor system.

Manning could, in theory, choose to sue the filmmaker or Sly for defamation. Because Manning is a public figure, he’d have to prove that the statements were made with “actual malice,” which means that the persons knew the information was false or acted with reckless disregard to the truth or falsity of the information. Al Jazeera potentially satisfied that standard by seeking and including a statement from Manning’s agent.

  1. Sorry Colt fans, your Super Bowl is forever TAINTED.

And this just continues the Broncos long tradition of cheating. From circumventing the salary cap (the only reason they won their two Super Bowls) to greasing up linemens’ uniforms. Now this. Peyton is an absolute DISGRACE. Sorry, truth hurts.

  2. Breaking: Chris Mortensen reports 11 of 12 of Manning’s blood tests were 2 mL over the legal limit

  3. Wait, AL JAZEERA? There is actually a channel I would trust less than ESPN to talk about sports?

  4. Don’t worry. Peyton Manning will get a pass. Tom Brady on the other hand would be crucified in the media to a bigger extent than he was for deflategate which had no evidence against him at all. But us Patriots fans have come to accept this double standard.

  5. First things first: HGH should be legal and encouraged if it works

Could you imagine if this was Brady? Since it’s Manning, and he’s done anyway, no one will care. Essentially a non-story.

  6. If this was Brady they would have him in jail now. Colts, Steelers and Broncos mentioned in this report. Cheaters!!!

  7. “Manning could, in theory, choose to sue the filmmaker or Sly for defamation. Because Manning is a public figure, he’d have to prove that the statements were made with “actual malice,” which means that the persons knew the information was false or acted with reckless disregard to the truth or falsity of the information.” please tell me how this is any different from Brady and #framegate, keeping in mind the NFL already admitted in Federal court it had no evidence Brady did/was involved in anything…

And I’m not even going to suspect Manning actually used HGH…but if he did the cheater crowd is going to have a new poster boy…oh wait he didn’t play for NE, nothing to see here, move along

  8. Apparently it didn’t help much, now 39 year old brady and the pats (i.e. old wash ups) there’s a legitimate connection, but no one is wiling to follow up with an investigation.

  9. “Any medical treatment received by Ashley is a private matter of hers, her doctor, and her family.”

Uh oh… That sounds like some secret magic words to me…

  10. Lets see how the media handles this one after the brady situation….

Also – hard to call this a fair comments section when you filter out stuff that you don’t want in there even though its relevant to the articles you write…

  11. Do a search on the tea-bagging incident at Tennessee that was covered up…

I bet if this was brady everyone would have said that latest SB would have an asterisks or whatever…

but since manning has no rings since then i guess it will blow over.

  12. Peyton: “Uh, Ashley, what’s this package you got in the mail?”
Ashley: Umm, it’s just my HGH. Would you like to try some”?
Peyton: “Sure, why not? I’m nearly washed up anyway. It can’t hurt.”

  13. If Manning denies it under oath and there is no proof to contradict his claim, then as far as I’m concerned he’s clean.
Because if a hall of fame quarterback with no past history of wrongdoing is willing to go on record oath, under risk of perjury, and proclaim his innocence, that should carry a great deal of weight.

  14. Sly alleges the clinic sent growth hormone and other drugs to Ashley Manning, Manning’s wife, so that there could never be a connection to Peyton. On an undercover video, Sly said the Mannings ALSO came to the clinic after normal business hours for intravenous treatments.

  15. Ashley is now being actively coached by Condon about all the ailments that she was treating with HGH, almost exclusively used by athletes. Nothing like asking your wife to lie for you.

  16. The media was complicit in white washing the PEDs epidemic in MLB until non sports reporters began to investigate. Knowing how Goodell operates…history about to repeat itself.

  17. Peyton was generally aware that his wife was receiving HGH treatments. 4 Game suspension loss of draft picks, and $1 Million in fines to Indy. At the very least.

  18. Goodell has announced that “the integrity of the game” requires that he put Manning on double secret probation.

  19. No…it isn’t garbage, Peyton and you’re lying. But it’s no surprise…not to me anyway. The NFL doesn’t have a real testing program. Never has…probably never will. You can believe 90% of these guys are on some sort of PED or other.

  20. The timing of this is perfect…..Concussion movie released yesterday. And a PEDs scandal today. Luckily, Roger has Blandino to manipulate the umpiring.
PS…….When will the L.A. team announcements begin and when will the bribery accusations filter out. FIFA has nothing on Roger and his Henchmen.

  21. I don’t buy it. A smart guy like manning would use someone else’s name that would be harder to connect. Use his wife? That’s just dumb

  22. Peyton Manning is the real cheat and scumbag. So glad the world has turned on him and the worst part is he has a pathetic showing for it…a single ring. Sorry Manning even without your disasturous decline and this new report you were never in the running for GOAT.. GOATS win rings just look at Jordan and Brady

  23. Manning’s dome grew to that enormous size years before the rumored HGH use. Imagine what it would be like if he actually had used it!

  24. If this was Brady, Mr. “integrity” would be calling wells and dreaming about how many draft picks he can take from a liquored-up Bob Kraft.

But since it’s his fair haired boy Manning, Mt. “Integrity” spent the evening threatening ESPN with a full season of Monday night games featuring the best of the AFC South, if so much of a word of these scandalous allegations are uttered on their air.

    #WWE
    #Integrity

  25. I love Peyton Manning and will always want to give him the benefit of the doubt…however, for someone who was a control freak for every facet of his life (football, business, even SNL), to allow his wife to open him up to such criticism would go against everything he’s done…

That said, I’m happy he did recover regardless if it was through HGH or natural. Seeing his comeback with Denver was fun to watch.

  26. Al Jazeera on american sports? It’s a tough call. However I ran into their Risking It All series and yea wow. Look it up. Respectable journalism to say the least.

  27. His denial sounds an awful lot like Lances Armstrong use to back in the day.

I mean come on… he has so much at stake between his legacy, career (whatever is left of it), and his brand… did anyone really expect anything less than a full force denial? He’ll even likely bring legal action, even if its true, because that’s what people expect an innocent man to do.

Did he actually do it? Probably… after all he came back from missing an entire season due to what was at the time described as a career threatening injury, and had two of the best seasons of his entire career. That might not be too strange, except he did it at age 36/37. Sure, it could be argued he was playing with a better team then he ever had, but showing marked improvement at 37 AFTER a significant injury? If that doesn’t scream PED use, I don’t know what does.

Oh course, very little will ever come of this other than a hot debate in the fan community. Manning had always been the good guy poster boy for the league, and there is zero chance they take any of this seriously.

  28. To TheBroncosCheatdTheSalaryCap –

You must be a Raiders fan. If you’re a Raiders fan, your team’s use of stick em is well documented, particularly L. Hayes and all your receivers of that era. You won the 1980-81 SB using it. You also greased up your uniforms, as did all teams of that era. Your team’s use of steroids is also well documented, even as late as 2004 with the case of Romanowski. You’re talking out of the side of your mouth.

  29. As someone who follows a team (and player) that has been utterly smeared by the media with literally zero evidence (in fact the scientific evidence proves nothing happened), seeing the same thing happen to another player is just as ridiculous.

Until there’s actual evidence, I’m assuming Manning is innocent. I fell for it once with bountygate, and was worried for a bit when the wells report came out.

The NFL and sports media spin stories are definitely not going to catch me again. I’ll back any player/team vs. the NFL/media until I feel there’s been enough real evidence to prove otherwise.

If there’s a group I have completely zero trust in, it’s the NFL and the sports media. They live to sell their product, which is sensationalism and stories. Neither care about facts or truth when smearing a big name will generate so much more revenue.

Don’t fall for the media/NFL spin trap, guys. No matter how much you may hate the player/team.

    ———————————————————
Did you say that for Tom Brady, as well???

  31. This is easily beaten.
    1. He and his wife need to destroy their phones.
    2. He needs to lawyer up.
    3. The Colts need to create a website ‘aljazeeraincontext.com’
    4. Then he just needs to deny, deny, deny.

Follow these steps, and he’ll be vindicated. Like other NFL greats: OJ, Brady, etc.

  32. New Papa John’s pizza ad for new special HGH topping. Peyton will pitch it, but only Ashley will be shown eating it. Yum! New Nationwide ad jingle: Peyton, your ass is so fired!

  33. Put asterisks on his participation banners?

Maybe should have played Ashley in all those playoffs?

How bad would he have been without all the PEDS?

Jerry Jones may have an opening.

Clemmons, Bonds, Sosa denied HOF; just sayin.

Will Papa Johns allow their pizza to be tainted?

Seriously, it’s a shame that one individual’s lack of integrity tarnishs the shield for everyone.

  34. Now the shoe is on the other foot. A little tight and smelly isn’t it. Let’s see if the commentators throw him under the bus like they did to brady.

  35. All you Brady lovers are hilarious. Brady and the cheat riots have been nailed numerous times. Peyton is clean as a whistle. Notice how he came right out and defended himself. No cover up here idiots. I bet he still has his cell phone to. #raiderfanhere. #ihatedenver

  36. Come. On. Al Jazeera is now an American Football news source?

Tell that to all of my fellow “spoiled” Millenials who died in Ramadi, or my best friend in the whole world who fell in Fallujah.

Al Jazeera? So Tokyo Rose is calling the game now?

    We lost.

  37. If I had neck surgery, I would absolutely use HGH. The best healing agent available. His quality of life post football will be much better because of that decision. Anybody who doesn’t use HGH for healing when they have the means is an idiot. Plus, the NFL didn’t test for HGH until 2014 and if it happened in 2011 it’s a moot point. A minimum of 99% of the league was using HGH until 2014.

  38. While we are at it, why don’t we react emotionally to Joseph Goerbels propaganda in regards to Jesse Owens.

What a joke. This makes me sick, not only the fact that is was published by my favorite website, but the fact that people just…ate it up, and emotionally responded with absolutely zero regard to the fact that perhaps the source is flawed.

This is precisely why this country will never work. We think we are better than everyone else, but this story gets eaten up, this is it, this is the proof that people aren’t qualified to directly elect a leader. Just read the comments and understand the source, THIS.

  39. And so HGHgate begins… will there be a huge fine, suspension, draft picks lost, and constant accusations of being a cheater with tainted victories? That’s what Tom Brady has been put through,or is Peyton Manning going to automatically be exonerated because, well,he’s Peyton Manning ?

  40. James Harrison of the Steelers was also named in this story. The cheating of the Steelers, Broncos and Colts has ruined football. Think of the poor children. When Mike Tomlin stepped on the field and tackled Jacoby Jones, it was the worst moment in sports history. These filthy cheating organizations need to be dealt with immediately.

  41. As a Raider fan, who HATES the Broncos, this is just not a big deal to me. He wasn’t even playing; he took HGH to recover from an injury. Doctors prescribe lots of medications banned by the league for legitimate medical needs. This should not reflect on his performance on the field.

  42. As a Raider fan, who HATES the Broncos, this is just not a big deal to me. He wasn’t even playing; he took HGH to recover from an injury. Doctors prescribe lots of medications banned by the league for legitimate medical needs. This should not reflect on his performance on the field.

  43. Mr. Florio,
Can you please explain why NFL Network and ESPN aren’t even talking about this story?

  44. I now know why he has such a problem with that rash on his forehead. Mixing HGH with wine coolers is apparently a problem for him.

Has Bob Kravitz at the Indy Star broken this story yet?

  45. @B!! ….Riiiiight. I guess when it comes to getting to the bottom of a story like this considering the parties involve, you would more hold your breath for one of the CHEERLEADING US Sports network to expose it, Especially when its matters concerning the NFL and on a wider scale certain athletes .

Maybe it takes a MEDIUM like a Al Jazzera to go tackle this.No question every athlete should be fair game and just don’t go after the ones you hand pick to target because you don’t like.

Remember it took an IRISH Sports Journalist writing for a British newspaper to EXPOSE Cyclist Lance Armstrong. You really think any of the MAJOR sports Entity in the States would have gone out and done that to one of their golden boys.
    .

  46. Stop it; I don’t believe it. And I’m a Patriots fan. Peyton did what he did on natural talent alone. He didn’t take anything illegal to make him better. I would be absolutely shocked if there is anything actually substantial behind this report. He didn’t need a chemical advantage.

  47. Meh. It hasn’t really helped him fix his dismal play in the playoffs so I could care less.

  48. Peyton you’re doing just fine…
    Deny all allegations.
    Lie.
Profess your ignorance of the rules.
    Blame all low level employees.
    Destroy your cell phone.
Smile for the courtroom sketch artist.

  49. al jeezero? you are reporting something a terrorist supporting network says about an American sports icon seriously? might be easier ti believe if it were not for the whole death to America praise alla they report hourly. this is a new low even for this site.

  50. Real talk i want ALL nfl players using any drug that keeps them from a future of pain and dispair.

  51. Gotta get back on the field.

Whats this box on my front porch?

Rubbing cream makes neck feel good.

    No one will ever know.
    (because)
Nation wide they’re on my side!

  52. I know this is only Peyton Manning and not Tom Brady, but I feel the NFL should take this just as seriously as if the allegations were against the League’s star quarterback.

  53. “I want to take HGH but I can’t have it linked to me in any way…because that would not be good at all. My legacy could be tainted. I know – I’ll have it shipped to MY HOUSE…in MY WIFE’s NAME…noone will EVER know! Perfect!”
    Damn I’m smart!

  54. I cannot wait for the complete hypocrisy this story will expose. The league shills at ESPN will fall all over themselves to defend Peyton. We will hear from the talking heads about how “everyone does it” and “there’s no definitive proof”. We’ve already got hacks like Greggggg Doyel proclaiming his innocence, but he’s a Colts homer, so that’s to be expected. Can’t wait for the national media to show their true colors on this.

  55. You want “garbage,” read the NFL’s reports on Tom Brady and “deflategate,” starting with Ted Wells’ novel. Now THAT’S garbage!!!!!!!

  56. Reports from al jazeera? While they’re more credible than Mort, I’d rather not.

I doubt Manning is/was a user, but HGH should be allowed for players on IR recovering from injuries. Harrison did it and I don’t blame him.

  57. James Harrison and Julius Peppers were among the other players mentioned in connection with this HGH scandal.

  58. Even though I spent the better part of the last 15 years rooting against him, i actually love Peyton Manning so I hope this report is not true. That said I hope the NFL in order to protect the integrity of the game launches a full and complete investigation, and I hope the national sports and news media rips him apart regardless of his denial (under oath or not) for this much more serious cheating allegation because fair is fair. its gut check time now ESPN, NFL you destroyed Brady with no evidence, a sham investigation and a denial under oath based on an accusation alone. Now lets see if you will treat Manning the same.

  59. What an incredible accusation this is. Lots at stake here. I like Peyton, even if it is true I don’t care. The only thing I’m interested in seeing is if the media tries to ruin his career like they did to Brady. Patriot fans win again. It never stops!

  60. His team wants to avoid paying his contract extension or pay him even less than wha was agreed? I thought that was already dealt with. I don’t follow the NFL much these days.

  61. They will throw a Papa Johns pizza in his face as punishment. If this was Brady or NE, this would be the first story on ESPN, MSNBC and Yahoo sports.

Hang it up Peyton, you were great in your day, your old and time to pack it in dude. You made enough money already.

If this is a true story, I have lost all respect for this guy.

  62. I doubted it right up until his agent said “whatever treatments his wife received, are between her and her dr and private” that says it all. If it wasn’t true the statement would have been “Ashley never received anything from these people” but, it wasn’t.

I know, Hateroids had been waiting for something about Brady they could harp on.

  65. we’ll need to wait for more to come out but this is priceless reading these comments from Brady haters. History of cheating? yeah, all those one times the Pats were fined for video locations, which had zero to do with Brady.

Hateroids are more entertaining than most TNF games.

  66. Per a league source an independent investigation has been initiated to discover the ‘facts’ after which it will be announced that Bob Kraft has been fined $100M, the Patriots will be stripped of all draft picks, Sean Payton will be suspended a decade, Tom Brady will be suspended a full season, the Redskins and Cowboys will have their salary cap halved and Richie Incognito will be summarily executed at dawn. Oh and Peyton Manning will retire at which time the waiting period will be waived and he will be immediately enshrined in the HOF in his own specially constructed wing

  67. Oh noooooooooo. We don’t need to wait for evidence or proof. He is guilty. Just like Brady right? Hahahahhahaha. Best part is that it’s gonna come out that this true and Brady is innocent. And you are all going to get to put that in your hat and smoke it.

  68. Why not use HGH in this particular situation. It helps rebuild and repair tissue and aids in the rehabilitation from certain injuries such as tears in tendons. Their using stem cell injections now as a means to repair such injuries as to try and avoid surgery.

  69. This actually should be relatively easy to sort out. If the pharmacist told the truth then they can and should be disciplined by the Office for Civil Rights for the HIPPA violation. If they lied then there is nothing further to this story. If the pharmacist is disciplined, then it is fair to ask whether Peyton did violate the leagues PED rules.

  70. Who cares? If he did take them, it was to recover from an injury during a year when he wasn’t even playing. Completely different from teams and players cheating during the season to win games.

  71. Utter nonsense…as of today (Sunday) the accuser is denying it. And can anyone really think that the Manning camp is that dumb that they would put Ashley Manning on the ship to. Honest to God this is so silly. Also it was claimed that he and Ashley went to the clinic after hours—really??? I anyone in Indianapolis had known that it would have been on the news immediately.

  72. Now I’ve seen it all, a terrorist attack on Peyton Manning. Have there been denials to the report issued by Hairston, Jeter, Zimmerman, Howard, and Tyson? We will now be flooded with denial denials and disinformation. I would consider the source of this report and blow it off. After all, it’s not ESPN, that bastion of journalistic integrity, making the earth-shattering revelations.

Nothing shocks or surprises me anymore when it deals with the NFL. And I won’t be if this report about Manning is validated. Much the same as stem cells have shown the ability to cure or mitigate some diseases, HGH is reportedly beneficial in healing serious football-related injury. I wouldn’t fault Manning for using something to help in the recovery from that neck injury. It’s not legal but thoroughly understandable. As punishment, don’t allow Manning to make anymore horrible TV commercials.

Now let’s get on to the real news of the NFL sticking it to the fans of 3 cities who are going to get shafted by a group of billionaire NFL owners.

  73. LMAO suddenly “everyone is doing it” is acceptable and apparently there ARE levels of cheating, per the Patriots haters.

The stench of hypocrisy is going to be thick across America today.

  74. This is precisely why this country will never work

Was with you until this. This country has worked damn well for over 200 years. Most of the world lives free because of us.

Keep in mind the majority of people aren’t being polled or writing letters to the editor or posting on a football website.

It’s not representative of very much.

Cheating allegations are as old as the game itself. In fact it was a lot more common back in the day. Google NFL spy stories once had comedic touch. There’s a whole lot of legendary coaches involved.

Not to say Peyton did anything, but…. This is a very simplistic and shallow view. The Mannings might have drugs sent to Ashley: 1) Doctor/Patient confidentiality. 2) Wife can’t be compelled to testify against husband in a court of law. Sounds pretty smart to me. Apparently Peyton, if not both, went to the clinic during office hours, was THAT on the news? Again, not saying he did anything, but don’t be such a homer, it’s more possible than you think.

I mean, Indy has pumped in noise and Denver has a history of fudging the salary cap/cheating in their Super Bowl years, so there’s a history there. Conversely, the idiots in the NFL offices could give back the Patriots’ picks they took without proof or reason. Doesn’t feel very fair or good, does it Horseshoe or Donkey fans? Shoe, other foot…
