Chip Kelly: Jason Peters “couldn’t go at end of game”

After Saturday night’s Eagles loss, there were a pair of reports that Eagles left tackle Jason Peters took himself out of the game in the fourth quarter because he didn’t want to risk getting injured playing for a team going nowhere this season.

On Monday morning, Eagles coach Chip Kelly said that wasn’t the case during an appearance on WIP in Philadelphia. Kelly said that Peters, who has battled back issues this season, got hurt early in the game and wasn’t able to finish it out as a result.

“Jason just couldn’t go at the end of the game,” Kelly said, via Philly.com. “Jason’s given us everything; he’s been a warrior all season long. It’s unfair to say he’s not giving us his all.”

Peters had a rough game in the loss to the Redskins and his overall season wasn’t up the standards he set in previous years. Peters is set to make a base salary of $7.55 million next season as part of the four-year extension he signed with the team in 2014. His cap charge of $9.3 million would result in $3 million in dead money should the Eagles decide to move on, although they probably need to sort out any changes to the mode of operation in the personnel department before making that kind of call.

  1. And Chip hasn’t lost the team.
Murray was the perfect move for this offense.
McCoy was all about the salary cap.
    d-jax was a gang member.
the Eagles were never seriously talking to the Titans about a trade to get Mariota.
Kelly never wanted total control – he says he’s not a cap guy – he just wants to coach the players he’s given.
Peters gave all he had last night after admitting to team mates he wasn’t gonna risk getting hurt for Bozo Kelly & this roster of players.

  2. So, did Peters take himself out of the game, or was he taken out by the staff?

Because nothing in this report refutes Eskin’s tweet.

The clown show of the division rolls on. Meanwhile in Washington we are the class and respectable unit about to win our FOURTH Superbowl. #ThankGodImaRedskinfan

YOU NEVER SEEM TO AMAZE ME.
In a normal season, in the NC EAST, with their record, the redskins would be right where they always are at this time of the year. IN LAST PLACE. They will be playing the Seahawks. DREAM ON.

  4. Chip – Before cutting Jason Peters, make sure you have a replacement. Thats how the NFL works. A player is over paid, you line up a replacement. But you don’t cut a guy and put in a scrub … unless you are Chip Kelly.

  5. Peters is a bitch. He was getting beat all night, and like the rest of the Eagles, gave up. Just like the Giants did last night. I’m not going to sit here and say the Redskins are the Cardinals or the Panthers or anything, but look at the way they are playing….They had everything on the line Saturday night, same as the Eagles, but one team fought harder. There’s a lot of nonsense going on in Philly these days….their play on Saturday night says everything you need to know. They gave up with the division on the line. Gave. Up.

  6. Did anyone else notice Kelly caving to the crowd’s boos in the 4th quarter? He sent out the punt team, the crowd disapproved, Kelly called a timeout then sent his O back out. Not saying which move was right or wrong but C’MON MAN!

  7. I agree with logical voice. Our division is clown shoes but Washington looks like they’re ready to take control of it for the next several years. Cousins is the real deal. Congrats to Washington for not bailing on him after a few bad outings. Most qbs don’t hit the ground running like Wilson. Takes years to mature.

They’ll be a tough out in the playoffs. Hope Jay don’t make the same mistake his brother Jon made in 07 resting his playoff bound team week 17. I can easily see them beating Seattle and Carolina and then reaching the NFCCG in AZ.

  8. Anyone from Buffalo who saw the raw potential in the undrafted free agent TE the Bills signed out of Arkansas in 2004 and become the pro bowl LT he was to be could tell you Jason Peters is all about $$$ and Jason Peters.

  9. Noticed that Demarco Murray didn’t go back into the game after he fumbled, so it could have been Chip’s decision to keep Peters out since the game wasn’t going to be close after that.

  10. Lets face it, the skins were very lucky this year, with so many injuries to Dallas, and the rest of the NFC East. They will be in last place this time next year, like most years.

The Redskins also overcame a lot of serious injuries to key players. Dallas had bigger injury issues, but who cares. The Redskins are better than the Eagles and the Giants, and the Cowboys look to have quite a few more holes than just backup QB. Maybe they really are just a perennial 8-8 team with Romo, and the 12-4 season was an outlier. I don’t think the Redskins are about to apologize for playing in a division of losers.

  13. The Bill’s converted Peter’s from a crappy TE to a good tackle, he repaid them by demanding a new contract, and ended up leaving. No doubt he decided he’s had enough this year, or is just looking for another new contract.

  14. Eagles fans – you will lose Chip Kelly. If the owner sees how Chip has hurt the team, he’ll be fired. Then the process will start. Your team has to get a makeover and I would fire Chip and hire a GM. Then let that GM hire the new head coach. Most effective way to do it. Good luck from a Skins fan who remembers many great NFC East rivalries go through ups and downs.

  15. Skins are playing with two backup MLB, they’re so thin at cb that a converted wideout is starting there, down Niles Paul, No matt jones, two injured starters on the oline, no desean for half the season, and you wanna act like we just walked into the division champ spot?

  16. The NFCE is cyclical. Always has been. In the early 80’s it was Washington. Then for 7 years it was NYG. Then Dallas for 7 years. Then Philly from about 2000 to 06. Then the Giants for 07-12. Then Dallas for a few years. Now it looks like Washington will be in control for a few years especially with the other three teams looking at a serious downswing. None of it is luck or injuries.

Say what you will about the NFC East, but the Redskins earned the division by winning games at the end of the season that they had to win by playing their best football.

No, I do not think they will go very far in the playoffs but who even thought they would be in the playoffs?

21 of the 32 NFL teams currently have a losing record !!
