AFC playoff picture: Broncos are in, with plenty to play for

The Broncos are in the playoffs after Monday night’s win over the Bengals. But they still have a lot to play for with one more game to go.

Denver can earn home-field advantage throughout the playoffs with a Week 17 win and a Patriots loss, but Denver can also lose the division and have to go on the road as a wild card with a loss and a Chiefs win.

Here’s how the AFC playoff race shapes up heading into Week 17:

LEADERS
1. Patriots (12-3): New England will earn home-field advantage with a win over Miami next week, or a Broncos loss.

2. Broncos (11-4): Denver owns the head-to-head tiebreaker with New England, so if the Broncos win and the Patriots lose next week, the Broncos will be the AFC No. 1 seed. But if the Broncos lose and the Chiefs win, the Chiefs will win the AFC West and the Broncos will be a wild card.

3. Bengals (11-4): Cincinnati has clinched the AFC North but would lose the tiebreaker to both Denver and New England, so Cincinnati needs to win and Denver needs to lose next week for the Bengals to earn a bye.

4. Texans (8-7): The AFC South race has technically not yet been clinched, although the Texans will clinch with a win and will almost certainly win the division even with a loss.

5. Chiefs (10-5): The Chiefs have clinched a playoff spot and can still win the AFC West if they win next week and the Broncos lose.

6. Jets (10-5): The Jets are in the playoffs if they beat the Bills next week. They’d also make it if they lose and the Steelers also lose.

OUTSIDE LOOKING IN
7. Steelers (9-6): To make the playoffs, the Steelers have to beat the Browns next week, and the Jets have to lose to the Bills.

AFC SOUTH RACE
Colts (7-8): The Colts need to win next week, have the Texans lose next week, and hope other games break their way so that they earn the strength of victory tiebreaker over the Texans. That’s a tall order.

  1. Cleveland is finally going to beat the Fraudulent Steelers and the Jets will win, washing those nine Ravenless wins down the commode.

  2. The patriots will need to play everyone to win in Miami.

We do not want to travel to Denver…..

  3. It was refreshing to see a team in overtime that actually knew if they chose to kick/receive in the cointoss the other team chose which goal to defend.

  4. Denver went into last night’s game as the #3 seed.
In the last four weeks Denver has beaten the #1 seed and the #2 seed.
    I like Denver’s chances.

  5. So here we are, Pats are in with a bye and perhaps a 1 seed.
Brady has guided this patchwork team to another winning season. Yes, others have many injuries but they haven’t done as well as the Patriots.
Guess it had nothing to do with air pressure after all.

  6. @Mo’ Pro

Broncos and Bengals going into post-season without starting QBs and will be 1 win back of the Patriots, I’d say no matter what NE lost, those are more to overcome, they also didn’t moan and groan ALL season about these injuries that happen to every team.

If you look at Denver’s history, one thing stands out. This is a team with the greatest home field advantage in pro sports with that altitude. They need home field advantage to get through the playoffs. I still like New England at Denver in a rematch *IF* New England gets even slightly healthier. They did not have their best defender in Jamie Collins for that game, and given how prone Osweiler is to sacks (and how often and for how a loss Collins sacked Tyrod Taylor), I like New England here. They also did not have Julian Edelman.

Anyhoo, if New England wins in Miami, it will be a taller order for Denver to win in New England.

  8. @rabidbillsfan:

AJ McCarron has only started 3 gms(1-2). The Bengals were 10-2 and cruising to the division title by then.

The Broncos are better off with Osweiler and are probably relieved Manning isn’t healthy yet.

It’s not how many guys are in IR, it’s who they are. Most teams stash fringe players there for next year. The Pats IR’d there top 2 running backs and LT. The top 3 WRs and Gronk have all missed significant time. The rest of the OLine has been hurt off and on, with 3 out of 5 rookies starting for a good part of the year. Five different guys have started at LT. And that’s just the offense. I’d say that’s a lot to overcome. Brady shoud be MVP(but probably won’t be). Every team has injuries, but nobody has been hit harder at quality positions than the Pats.

  9. Not to take away from what Denver did last night…they were really gritty and tough to pull that one out…but like bencoates said, that homefield is a giant advantage and last night was no exception. The whole 4th quarter and OT the Bengals D was on fumes…no legs on their pass rushers, arm tackles…the altitude was probably the difference in a very close game.

  10. man games lost..Ravens #1 Pats #2..Ravens 5-10 Pats probably 13-3 with the #1 seed. Yeah..injuries sure are a part of the game. Denver lost its starter..but that is probably good for Denver. He was ranked LAST. Cinnci..Dalton is good..not great..McCarron seems to be ok. A drop off though. Patriots lost..well..just about everyone. They are on their 5th stringer at a very important position..LT..Bradys blind side. 5TH! Both starting WRs out..Gronk missed 1 1/5 games. Lost both starting RBs..multiple LB and OL/DL..I dont remember a team being so beat up. But..its part of the game..I think with them being so beat up..that #1 seed in intrical. Without it..I dont see them winning the AFC

  11. @bencoates

Denver’s home field advantage is overrated. They have been bounced at home in their first playoff game 2 of the last 3 seasons. Only 1 of their 5 home wins this season has been by more than 6 points.

  12. Broncos are 5-1 against the Patriots, Bengals, Chiefs, Packers, Vikings……Defense has faced Brady, Big Ben, Rodgers, Luck, Cutler, Flacco. Pretty good resume.

Discount them all you want…..they won’t be an easy out.

Denver doesn’t want to travel to Foxborough, either. Did not want to do it last year, do not want to do it this year.

The only reason Denver does not want to travel to new england they know their bench to field communications will be interrupted at a critical point in the game.

  15. Are the Broncos still scared of coming to Foxboro like DT admitted they were last year?
    🙂

  16. Ravens lost a lot of players and so did the Patriots. But one was eliminated from the playoffs a few weeks ago and one is the #1 seed. = Kraft has the refs in his pocket.

Oh… is that why they lost to the hapless Colts? Who were then steamrolled by the Pats.

So you’re saying they will lose in another early round to avoid being steamrolled in NE?
