Drew Brees: I don’t see myself in anything but a Saints helmet

There’s been a lot of speculation this year about whether quarterback Drew Brees and coach Sean Payton will remain with the Saints in 2016.

Payton has said several times that he has no plans to leave New Orleans and that he has faith the Saints can get back on track after a pair of losing seasons. During an interview with Mike Florio on Tuesday’s PFT Live, Brees echoed those sentiments.

While he knows that there’s always speculation about changes heading into the offseason, he said that he can’t see himself with a team other than the Saints or playing for a coach other than Payton.

“Bottom line, I don’t see myself in any other helmet than a Saints helmet and I don’t see myself playing for any coach other than Sean Payton,” Brees said. “I know there’s all kind of speculation, especially when you’re not heading to the playoffs. Everybody immediately wants to jump to what are they going to do this offseason and how’s it going to look for next season. I’m confident that a plan was laid out last offseason for how we’re going to build this thing back to where we can make a run.”

If part of that plan includes a way to lower Brees’ cap number of $30 million, it would go a long way toward both ensuring Brees remains in New Orleans and that the Saints can address some of the problem areas that have contributed to their disappointing results over the last two years.

For more with Brees, tune into PFT Live at noon ET on Tuesday. You can listen to all three hours live via the various NBC Sports Radio affiliates, through the links at PFT, or with the NBC Sports Radio app.

  1. Florio, can you ask him if he’d be willing to redo his contract and take a pay-cut in order to free up cap space that allows the team to address every other position on the team? I mean, he had to hold out for that extra million when he got his extension while claiming it wasn’t about money, it would be nice to hear him squirm when called on it.

  2. All part of the PR chess game but one that’s done and Saints put him on the trading block, I think the Houston Texans would be the perfect fit. Strong defense, DeAndre Hopkins, a few hours from his current home in New Orleans, and most importantly … plays indoors. Drew Brees could be huge in Houston!

  3. If lowering the cap hit just means spreading it out and extending the contract so the team has to pay a 39 year old qb with a balky shoulder, then no thanks!

  4. Drew, you got your ring and got the reward in the form of a big deal after holding out, which significantly hamstrung the team going forward.

I’m not hating, I would prob have done the same thing, but you reap what you sew.

  5. See, the hidden angle is he was standing naked in the locker room with a helmet on when he was giving that interview. It’s like the old joke about the guy wearing the saran-wrap miniskirt: clearly you can see he’s nuts.

  6. No team can take a 30 mil cap hit for any player.

He either restructures his contract or negotiates an extension that is cap friendly or they have to cut him.

    He’s done.

    ———————————————–

4547 yds, 31 TD, 11 INT, 68%, 100.7 passer rating and had he not missed a game he’d be putting up another 5,000 yard season. Yeah, he’s clearly washed up.

  8. Why are there only troll comments?
Doesn’t anyone want to talk pro football on PROFOOTBALLTALK?
Drew Brees has never had a Pro-Bowl WR with the Saints, but has had
30 tds for 8 years in a row, 10 total
    4000 yds for 10 yrs
    95 300 yd games
    13 400 yd games
    60,000 fastest

Brees is not the highest paid QB, and Joe Flacco makes more…

  9. I like how he tells how long he’s going to play (45) , how he won’t be moved, and Sean Payton won’t be moved either. Last time I checked, Tom Benson owns the team and makes those calls. The reality of the situation is Sean Payton has too much on his plate with play calling and personnel decisions. Furthermore, Bree’s doesn’t have a crystal ball and its unlikely that his performance can hold up like it has at his age. The Saints are an 8-8 team with a qb playing for his legacy and NFL network documentary.

  10. What is going to get done is easy to figure out. Look at the 30 mill there is a reason that number is his cap number and it wasn’t just because the Saints needed the extra five mill this season.

The 30 mill is what he is going to get. but it will work out like so he will get a 15 mill bonus and a 3 year contract at 15 mill a year. Drew takes home 30 mill in 2016 as he was suposed to the saints get that cap number down to 20 mill a year (15m base and the 15m bonus spread over the life of the deal).

Franchise QB’s don’t grow on trees and despite the record the guy has had one of his better years and that is throwing to a back up TE and two receivers that are lucky to be 5-10 and more like 5-8. in addation to getting zilch from a defense that will again be ranked 32.

If there were no Brees in NOLA the Saints record would be more like 2-14 maybe 1-15.

  11. And who in the hell are they gonna sign to replace him if they dump him for cap purposes? Sure the Saints would have more cap space, but they’d suck even more without a HOF QB that is still playing well.

    ==========================================

How is cheating involved in the bounties? What kind of cheating is there? Cheating involves breaking the rules to give yourself a competitive edge. They hit the opposing players perhaps a little harder. That’s not “cheating”

  14. mr1…you should check that. With respect to Brees’ performance over his 10 years with the saints…all 10 seasons have produced top 5 offenses…4 of which were the top ranked offense including last season…a season in which they finished 7-9.

  15. Maybe they can create a separate company to funnel cash to in order to keep his cap hit down?

  16. luv the aint’s fans rants while listening to Jethro Tull’s Living in the Past…enjoy watching the playoffs (again) from the comfort of your couches..

The Minnesota Bakers (5 turnovers) had 12 men on the field and
    “FAVRE throws an interception!
    FAVRE throws an interception!
    The Saints WIN! ! “

  18. Brees has missed one game (in Sept 2015)since his junior year in HIGH SCHOOL …1995
think of how many hits that is from
Senior year in High School (Texas State Champs)
thru 4 years @ Purdue (Big Ten Champs Rose Bowl)
    17 Pro seasons

  19. Brees should’ve been MVP in 2009 but the love fest for P Manning proved too much to overcome. Brees obviously had the better season that year so at least he won SB44MVP over Manning.

Drew Brees has never been NFL MVP
Drew Brees has never had a Pro-Bowl WR
    ———————————————–

Read your last statement and that’s why he is worth it. The best the Saints ever did him was get lucky on Colston in the 7th round. They guy has made his career throwing to a 7th round draft pick and folks they picked up on practice squads.

He has had no Megatron, no Julio Jones, no Dez Bryant, no Mike Evans, no Odell Beckham, no nothing. The best they ever tried to do for him was get Robert Meachem late in the 1st back in 2007 and he was an injury prone middling WR.

He got Cooks last year granted but think about that he has a WR that is 5’8” for a number 1 WR. Maybe it turns into something but don’t fault him for the front office never giving him a pro-bowl WR. He spreads the ball out to middling WR’s and fans/players/coaches vote on name and numbers so sure Drew Brees has never had a pro-bowl WR.

He is going to have 2 guys over 1000 yards this year and has had that a few times; think if he forced the ball into 1 guy over the whole year.

  21. I am LAUDING the ability of Brees to succeed at the very highest level of football with NO super diva WR!
I am pointing out this to the ever-dwindling real NFL football fan

  22. I am lauding both the Physical and Mental abilities of Brees to spread the ball around, and make the Offense work in all cases

  24. Like I’ve been saying, the Texans is the best spot for DaBreeze right now; however, Bill O’Brien cannot be the head coach. If the Mike Holmgren/49ers fantasy becomes reality, then I see DaBreeze heading off to ‘Frisco.

1st of all, THANK YOU for being a good person!
    TOTAL RARITY ! !
especially since I didn’t make my self clear AT ALL, just listing off stuff with no further comment; so I can absolutely understand where you were coming from! No Worries !

  26. You do not EVER trade away a QB playing at his level. Teams spend decades trying to find a franchise QB, to trade one away for draft picks is beyond stupid.

The only thing the Saints can do is try and work with Brees on a new contract.

Brees has been worth every penny and then some of his contract, the problem is that so many others have not been worth theirs. The Saints have lots of dead money because of bad signing but Drew has never been one of ’em. Everyone saying he is overpaid, etc doesn’t know what they’re talking about.

    He’s done.
    —————————————–

Yes he must be, that’s why he’s nominated again this week for FedEx Air Player of the week. All he did was squeeze balls between 2 defenders while hitting Cooks on the 5 yd line. Than he started hitting world famous guys like Willie Snead, Brandon Coleman and Michael Hoomanumani ? and Travaris Cadet. No other QB, exept Brady or Rogers could succeed like that.
Oh, did I mention he did it with a Plantar Fasciitis injury that hasd to be painful.

  28. It may be time for Bree’s to give back some money so there is a team around him… Plus he is always hurt and his value has diminished….

Team needs…. players to throw to, run with, block and don’t forget the other side of the ball…. Some of that money on a single player that has diminished this year can bring this team back….and I’m a Niner fan!!!

Maybe think team at this part of your career and you may go out on a high note down the road…. As a Saint’s player… Notice I did not say Saint… Haha

  30. Cool, please retire then.
No QB has taken greater advantage of the anti-D rules than this guy. Terrible QB for 3 years and then magically transformed.

  31. Can’t believe all the negative comments about Brees. The man has done more for New Orleans than anybody, and including outside of football. It’s pretty clear how much he loves this city. I don’t feel some of these comments represent how the people of New Orleans feel about him. I’m so glad he came along and hope he stays right here with Payton. They’ve had so many successful years together and two bad ones so we throw them out. Ridiculous.

  32. Drew is a stand up all around great guy. All you haters saying otherwise are just jealous. He’s staying in NOLA, and so is Sean. Enough already!

  33. Brees is all about $$$$$ … Brady took a paycut from over 20 million to 9 million, so the team could sign more talent …!
ALSO his involvement in BOUNTYGATE is sickening ….!

  34. Says the bitter Viqueen fan! 12 men on the field, favre threw interception! No bounty fake gate narrative needed! Suck it up buttercup!
