Eagles fire Chip Kelly

AP

The Eagles fired Chip Kelly Tuesday night.

A short team release announced that team chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie had released Kelly. The team announced a Wednesday press conference.

Pat Shurmur will be the interim coach for Sunday’s season finale.

“We appreciate all the contributions that Chip Kelly made and wish him every success going forward,” Lurie said in the statement.

  1. Something must have been said in a meeting. Not to even wait until the season ended means something blew up real fast.

  2. Are you sure he didn’t just trade himself away for some random Oregon assistant coach?

  3. It was a matter of time. Howie Roseman has Lurie in his corner. Eagles front office is dysfunctional. As always, it starts with the owner.

  4. Gimmick offense + bad evaluating talent + dropping popular talented players = Good bye.

So many job openings in college and soon to be NFL, he’ll be out of work for a mere days.

  5. One of the worst coaches ever. You shoulda kept the team you inherited fool. Mike tomlin next. Its a travesty what he has done to the vaunted pittsburgh defense

  6. That’s the second big name coach this season to be fired directly after losing to the Redskins. If the Skins beat the Cowbows this week… Garrett might be out of work…

  7. I wonder if maybe Chip knew he was getting get fired and requested to be let go now in order to become available for a college job that could be opening. Rather than being locked up another week.

Is anyone really surprised by this?

    By the decision? No
    By the timing? Hell yes
Going to be interesting to see if TN takes a run at him and if so whether he accepts another NFL gig or heads back to the NCAA, where he can write his own ticket and thoroughly control the program.
    Whither the Eagles from here?

  9. Thats what happens wwhen andy reid starts dabbing. You had his great players and booted them to comfort your ego, but all that did was show your weakness to accept and adapt.

  10. Not sure that taking a page from my Buc’s is how you build promise for your franchise, but I guess Lurie has the scratch to pay 2 head coaches while 1 is just cashing checks. Note to all prospective head coaches, have a 2 year plan on your 4 year contract.

  11. Where are all those “Chip Kelly made the right decision to get rid of McCoy and Jackson” people now? Sad part is if he was never hired the Eagles would’ve been contenders every year with the talent they had. McCoy in the backfield with Maclin and Djax at Wr, name me a scarier RB/Wr combo?

  12. .
I can only envision two scenarios :

    1. Kelly asked for his release to pursue the Titans job.

    2. He was told to fire assistants and refused.
    .

  13. “We appreciate all the contributions that Chip Kelly made…”

    Yeah right.
Sure have to appreciate the sincerity of their appreciation.

  14. That is funny. He thought he was smarter than everyone else and got rid of all their playmakers. Go back to college Chip. Grown men can see that your arrogance was only exceeded by your ineptness.

  15. if you cant trade for mariota. get fired, so you can get hired by the team that has mariota…….and the #1 overall pick……Brilliant.

  16. I’m jumping on the Eagles bandwagon! They can right the ship and still salvage the rest of the seaso- oh wait.

  17. Kelly not only lost the team and didn’t win games, he gutted the talent and left a mess for the next regime. It will take years to come back from the Chip Kelly experiment.

  18. Congrats Philly fans. Chip the GM left your team with a huge mess. No quality wide receiver, dismantled offensive line, a high priced running back that was greatly miss used and even at his best really wasn’t more talented than the one traded away, a mess at quarterback, and a high priced corner back that gets burnt at least twice a game. What a mess. On top of that I don’t think any player respected him the way he tossed them under the bus every week and never took responsibility for his own short comings. Kelly coached and played GM with an arrogance he didn’t earn.

  19. Headline as read by Philly fans: “Eagles Fire Chip Kelly…Genius!”
Headline as read by Chip Kelly: “Eagles Fire Genius Chip Kelly!”

  20. Thank God. He destroyed our team. We need someone who understands the NFL. The guy I want is Sean Payton.

  21. I get why they let him go, but it appears to me that it will 3-4 years to right the ship in Philly. Like everyone else here says, he belongs in an environment where people won’t talk back to him.

  22. Hired by Tenn by the end of the week destroyed the iggles and then this guy gets his way

  23. What the hell was the Eagles owner thinking letting this overmatched mega egomaniac dump all the playmakers they had? Damn they got a lot of years ahead rebuilding what Chip destroyed.

  24. In this case, the GM and the coach were tied at the hip…both were inflexible and unable to adjust to pro football on the field and in the front office. DeMarco must be ecstatic.

  25. Chip Kelly to Texas A&M by 01/10/2016–read it here 1st

And Philly now what? The way he gutted the roster of the prototype NFL player to his version of football….Philly is a few years away to getting back to “normal”

  26. Not an Eagles fan but this is why Jeffrey Lurie is one of the best owners in the NFL. He may have made a mistake in giving Chip all the power but he was at least able to quickly recognize his mistake, admit it, and begin moving on from it

  27. Wow. Geez. Who’s gonna wanna step into THAT mess? No qb, an overpriced rb that complains directly to the owner, an overpriced cb that’s been burned all year, a shaky o-line…does Gruden finally jump back in and make a play for RG3 or Kapernick, thinking he can rebuild them?

  28. Smart move.

Maybe the next coach won’t be an egomaniac and will try to put the players in the best possible position to win, rather then running the best players out of town, trying to fit square pegs into round holes, and be tone deaf about the consequences of his decisions.

I don’t know what the future has in store for the Eagles, but the mess Chip’s making was going to need to be cleaned up sometime…. might as well start now.

  29. Gotta be honest, if I’m running the Titans I’m not real excited to bring in a guy who flamed out as spectacularly as Chip did.

  30. I’m sure andy reid kicking arse in KC added no pressure on lurie to make a move. Lurie whiffed on reid firing, whiffed on Kelly hiring, whiffed on GM situation. BMOC needs to look into mirror on the failures of org. He looking like jerry jones clone. step back lurie.

  31. Chip sbatoged the eagles traded all their good players away lol, set the eagles back for 3 4 years. And now he going back to college or to ten, i called ilat the beginning of the year once he traded away mccoy lmao said if he misses the playoffs he will be going backnto ncaa or ten.. ahahahah

  32. Thanks to Chip for showing us that you can not win consistently in the NFL while averaging 25 minutes or less in time of possession.

Does this mean that Desean Jackson can come back home?

  33. Well, well. Another in the long line of college coaches who were going to come into the NFL and reinvent the wheel.

Kelly was in way over his head and it showed big time. Now I suppose we’ll hear more from some of his players that he was a racist, which is totally unfair. He was stupid, but there’s no proof he was a racist.

Kelly left whomever gets the job in Philly a mess to deal with. They’re stuck with Murray because of all the money they gave him, and they have a QB who’s always one hit away from being on IR and who is not young anymore.

Maybe the NFL should combine the Eagles and Cowboys rosters. They’d win about half their games that way.

  34. Next humility check will come when the Titans release a statement that they are not interested…

  35. Texas Longhorns on Line 1. NFW he gets another NFL job at this point. He’s yet another example of a fine college coach who is completely out of his element at this level.

  36. Philly fans I told you weeks ago. You have to give lurie a chance to right the ship. As a skins fan once he lost to Dan Snyder he said enough is enough. He tried chip it didn’t work out give him credit for admitting his mistake, cutting his losses, and moving on. I’m a skins fan but admire the pride and grit of Philly. Stay gritty philly!

  37. Whoa. I’m not an Eagles fan but I’m well aware of the risky moves he made this year, and how poorly they paid off. That being said, I don’t generally support the notion of firing people every time you lose a few more games than you expected. Continuity and giving a team time to develop makes a big difference. The “revolving door” coaching staffs generally don’t work out well. Figured they would give him one more season to prove himself. They had better have a hotshot candidate in mind, otherwise things very well may get worse before they get better.

All things considered, as a Bills fan, I salute you sir, if for no other reason than trading us Mccoy (who for the record, was acting like a jerk towards you prior to eagles/bills game earlier this year, sorry about that). He was smart/quiet for most of the season but that week was frustrating to watch. Otherwise though, that was the bargain of a century.

New Titans coach by next Monday?
    ………………………………………………….
Titans or no other NFL team are dumb enough to give him a job!

  39. The Eagles had to learn the hard way , This guy was never cut out to be a NFL head coach, You can’t come into the PROS and treat grown men like college kids. And when it comes to personnel thinks you DON’T need ELITE talent to win games, Your SYSTEM is the be all that could win games with anybody( talk about delusional).

The only spot i see him working out in the NFL is as a COORDINATOR and just leave him there with no other IDEAS,Other than that College is where he needs to be.

  40. +1 for doing it now. Making a statement that they want their team back.

Do yourself a favor.. totally clean house. That political battle did not do anyone any good.

  41. Wow. Well kind of expected this, but not until the season is over. Luckily for the rest of the NFC East Lurie waited a year to do this after Kelly pissed away all of Philly’s talent.

And now what are the odds Bradford resigns in Philly? Slim I would think. That leaves Sanchize as the only viable QB option in Philly, doesn’t it? Keeps getting better and better.

Also, thanks to the Eagles for filling the drama void left by what appears to be a Redskins team going through a culture change down in DC.

    What a dumpster fire.

    Burn Eagles Burn…

  42. Good for Lurie. Sorry grey.
Tried to talk to ya about that ICWT stuff anyways.
The guy was overmatched & outcoached every week & it was obvious to most.

  43. Trying Kelly again after the last two years and all the crap with trades and the locker room issues would be like taking a swing of sour milk, saying, “God that’s awful,” putting it back in the fridge, and saying, “I’ll try it again later. Maybe it will taste better then.”

LMAO!!! Coach Know-It-All, it seems, doesn’t! Good riddance!!!

  44. Has anyone ever dismantled a franchise quicker than this unqualified disaster?

And how could he ever get another job in the league again?

It will take the ultimate in ignorance and foolishness to hire this guy. Loser franchises, line up for your latest mistake.

Philly fans are as dumb as donkey fans.

  45. I do not wish any person any sort of bad luck but I would say this is the Curse of Tim Tebow at work here. The Eagles did not treat Tebow in the best of ways and now Chip Kelly has paid the price for a free vacation and a place in the unemployment line for the forseeable future.

    ——————————-

Your franchise is worse off than Philly. Just sayin.

  47. “The same genius who was going to reshape the league? Bested by Coach Gruden and those champion Redskins!”

Yeah….Those champion 8-8 Redskins. The least horrible team in a horrible division.

  48. To listen to Chip Kelly talk the last 3 years, you would have thought that he invented football. News flash, Chip: you aren’t nearly as smart, innovative or knowledgeable as you thought you were. And that smug “I know everything” act only works when you actually win something worthwhile.

  49. I remember the first game Chip Kelly coached for the Eagles and all the plays they had on offense in the first half of that game. I have never seen anything like that before and probably never will again.

  50. Pointless to let him change the team like this, then dump him. Lurie should have kept him on or barred him from making the changes.

  51. Hey, Haslam, talk to Lurie and get a clue!

Now, there’s a chance Pettine can be reunited with his daddy….a pretty decent high school coach in Pennsylvania. Take your high school buddy, O’Neil, with you, too.

  52. Long-time Giants fans are thinking Ray Handley. Took a Super Bowl champion and sent them down the drain in just 2 years, highlighted by benching Simms for Hostetler and having Lawrence Taylor dropping into coverage on tight ends and fullbacks in the flat. Wellington Mara brings in an experienced coach (Dan Reeves), Simms back at QB, LT back to to rushing the passer, and presto, playoffs again and 4 separate Coach of the Year awards.

It was possible that Coughlin and Kelly would have both coached their final games Sunday, but to get kicked to the curb with just 5 days left in the season means Lurie was beyond negotiable. At least the Giants will make any parting of ways with Coughlin more of a salute/tribute than a firing.

  53. Do the majority of commenters really have to crap on Eagles fans? We were excited to get him and saw great potential. Obviously it didn’t work. We’re fans for life either way. Let’s hope for a better future.

    ……………………..
Wow! You have to be crazy to say that! Bills roster way better, better QB, WR, RB.

  55. Funny how Lurie got the dirty end of the stick when him and kraft were trying to figure out which franchise to buy. If I recall, Lurie tks kraft that the patriots were a waste and wouldn’t amount to much that the eagles were the better bet.

  56. Too bad Lurie already allowed him to gut their roster and jam up their cap with the likes of Murray. At least they didn’t lock up Bradford long term.

  57. So Chip Kelly has finally turned into Chop Liver. Now the players can celebrate by putting the smoothies on a table and knocking them over!

  58. Need to channel the late Mr Tose and find someone “who has it”. A guybwith some NFL experience, has been an HC, knows how to handle the media, can hire good coordinators andvdoesntvhave acGod complex about needingbto control personnel. And understands and respects the Philadelphia sports culture.

  59. The compensation that the Saints will ask for Sean Payton just keeps rising.
Two losing seasons in a row and teams are falling over themselves to hire Payton? The NFL coaching ranks are seriously depleted.

  60. Another “smartest guy in the room”….who wasn’t. The guy made a bunch of highly questionable moves that quickly turned a good team into a bad team. That will usually get you sacked.

  61. I honestly think that he plotted his way out of Philly! I said that something like this would go down after Tennessee fired Whisenhunt…so far…everything is going according to plan. Chip has a Mariotta addiction & feels that he’s the only one that can run his operation (Chip’s a mad scientist & Mariota is his Frankenstein). I know the Titans brash are behind closed doors as we speak…and if all parties agree…Chip will be their new HC before the draft. Buuuuuutttt…if it comes out that what Shady, D Jack, & others were saying about him manifest itself from the current locker room then the Titans may even think twice! Chip’s a leader of kids…not men & that dynamic alone could get him blackballed! From all accounts…he sounds like a Greg Schiano in disguise! This is reality TV @ it’s finest…stay tuned lol!

Chip Kelly is overrated and knows nothing on how to build an NFL team

Sums up Rex Ryan as well

  63. ROFL.

Who knew the Redskins would be the most stable and best run organization in the NFC East?

Next to be buried (and literally) is the corpse at the New York Nightmaras, the crime syndicate of the league.

And you know that the Dallas Rump Rider owner/GM/doctor/psychic/know-it-all Jerruh Jones won’t fire his hand-picked dingleberry of a head coach. You just can’t find this quality of a suck up and lap dog just anywhere!

Hail to the Redskins! This is too precious!

  64. I remember seeing the first game Chip coached with Mike Vick at QB and it was so fast I thought holy smokes, this is going to change the NFL! But it didn’t. But it could have. For a brief period the Eagles were terrifying.

  65. Meanwhile Jeff Fisher, 27-35-1 with no playoff appearances in 4 seasons, keeps on truckin in St.Louis….how?

  66. wow…couldn’t have happened to a better team or group of fans. I have to wonder if chip was a sleeper cell put in there by another team?

Dear Redskins, if this is a trend, please beat Dallas this week,
    signed, A Cowboys fan

    That’s Funny!

Might not happen though, with most of the Skins starters watching from the bench.
