With quarterbacks scarce, Bengals bring Mike Kafka in

AP

Vinny Testaverde should be getting a call any minute now.

As the shortage of qualified and/or sentient quarterbacks reaches a critical point late in the season, teams are passing around their discards to fill in for practice.

The Bengals announced they had signed Mike Kafka to their practice squad, giving them another arm for practice with Andy Dalton out with a thumb injury and A.J. McCarron’s wrist making his availability for practice this week iffy. Keith Wenning is the only other quarterback on their 53-man roster.

Kafka did some time with the Titans most recently, filling in their practice squad briefly before they found an upgrade in Bryn Renner. The former fourth-round pick of the Eagles hasn’t thrown a pass in a regular season game since 2011.

  1. I’m no Tim Tebow lover (um, you know what I mean) but this, along with the signing of Josh Freeman, is very clear evidence that the NFL has basically blacklisted him. There is no one that can tell me that Tebow isn’t a better option than Kafka and Freeman. I saw enough of his play with Denver to know that he’s better than either one of these warm(?) bodies. I’m half expecting to read that Cinci or Indi had contacted Jeff George or Brett Favre. Yeah, I went there, I played the Favre card.

  2. Rest McCarron vs. Ravens. The game means nothing to us. Start the entire practice squad and prep for Wild Card game.

  3. In no way would I want him starting or even 2nd string but how are Mike Kafka and Josh Freeman getting looks and Tim Tebow doesn’t get a shot with anyone?

I mean Tebow looked somewhat decent in preseason that I thought he could’ve stood to be a reserve for some team in this league.

By all means, if a first round bye doesn’t mean anything. If you win the game there is the chance of a first round bye for the Bungles, otherwise, welcome to going one and out in the wild card round instead of the next.

  5. How is Christian Ponder not signed? I always felt he’d be a pretty decent backup. Not starter quality, but good enough to come in and spot.

  6. If McCarron is really ok to play, then let the offense play and get the real-time reps for him. In any case, if someone on defense has a sore toenail they should be rested.

  7. Tebow should play! Jeff George would be a better option. and of course Favre. Wish the Vikings kept George and Favre!!!

  8. Tebow should play! Jeff George would be a better option. and of course Favre. Wish the Vikings kept George and Favre!!! Ponder is also a better option! Vikings should BEG to get him back to replace BUSTWATER!!!

  9. It’s the Colts, not the Bengals, who should pick up Tebow. Wenning knows Cincy’s offense, and should play if McCarron can’t go, but mainly, they need an arm to throw in practice this week – hence Kafka (TT not being known for his throwing, especially in practice).

The Colts have nobody that knows their offense, and need someone to step in and run a simplified game. With Tebow and Gore leading the ground game, they could beat the Titans in case their long-shot parlay comes through.

Ryan Lindley just got signed. If you think he’s better than Tebow, you’re just an idiot.

  11. After last night they may need a new coach. He was out coached after the first half. Denver made big adjustments and the bengals coach did not. He fed his QB to the wolves not changing up plays, going to the option, more running plays. Denver rushed 5 and six the whole second half. Ya think Cincy could have done that too with their rookie QB?

  12. I get that whimp Dalton and put him out there. Tell him he is ready. It was his bonehead move that caused the injury.
He is only has to play in that one playoff game you guys get each year and then he can go golfing.

Dalton choked more than momma cass eating chicken bones.

  13. I’m just mad I’m not going to get to watch Dalton choke in the first round of the playoffs yet again. I find great joy in that annual tradition.

  14. Is he the oldest practice squad guy in history?

One thing holding back a lot of those other old guys is they obviously are not eligible to be signed to the practice squad and would take up a 53-man roster spot.

  15. If anyone ever doubted how bad Christian Ponder was as a QB you have your answer. All of these junk QB’s are being brought in but not Ponder.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Lindley got a look because he is at least “able” to play quarterback in a normal system. Bringing in Tebow at this point of the season would require you to install an entirely new (college) offense for one or two games. Be ready for John Skelton to get a phone call before someone hits the Tim Tebow panic button.
