Browns fire Ray Farmer

AP

Browns General Manager Ray Farmer has been fired.

Farmer was fired by Browns owner Jimmy Haslam before today’s game, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

That news comes as no surprise. Farmer has failed to turn around the wayward franchise, and it doesn’t help that he was involved in an embarrassing incident in which he was suspended by the NFL for texting coaches during games.

Up next, it’s widely expected, is the firing of head coach Mike Pettine.

And then the Browns will have to find a new G.M. and a new coach, perhaps one who can finally change the fortunes of what has become the NFL’s worst franchise.

Before that, start with the owner. Nothing will change will Haslam at the helm… Sorry Cleveland.

  2. Browns are currently most laughable, but the Bills have a longer postseason drought and longer period in which they won their last playoff game. How do we define worst?

  3. Still amazing what a tiny slap on the wrist this franchise got for illegally communicating with sideline coaches from a skybox in an effort to get a competitive advantage. But then again, there’s no greater punishment for the Browns than making them use all their draft picks every year.

  4. Methinks if he did fire Farmer prior to the game, then Pettine would have followed as game time expired. Didn’t though, did it?

  5. Now will they trust his replacement to pick the new coach or will Haslam do that and expect the two to get along?

  6. Great, now we can expect another two years before the Browns fire their next GM and/or head coach.

  7. This organization has no stability or anything. The fans whine after every year to fire someone and do the same the next.

Let’s not forget the story about the homeless guy telling Haslam to draft Johnny Foosball.

  8. Cleveland is perhaps the best football city in America. It’s too bad their great fans have suffered so long. Hopefully the owner will finally hire a good GM this time. Don’t go for a big talker, just hire a good scout. If you get your draft picks right, you have a chance. The problem is, the new GM might think he only has two years to turn it around, so that might cause him to make decisions that aren’t smart. The owner has to give the guy five years. It usually takes three years to get back to zero when you’re buried this deep.

  10. They have and will continue to be the worst run organization until they get someone / anyone with a clue.

  11. How dare you Florio! The 49ers are the NFL’s worse franchise! The Browns are nowhere near as dysfunctional.

1 – our FO fired one of the best coaches in the league because they wanted more credit for the success.

2 – We have a nice man as HC who the players like, who looks like a p*rn star and is slightly challenged

3 – We have an owner who has no interest in our team and holds the fans hostage week after week

4 – We managed to destroy, undermine and bench our franchise QB – who signed a very team friendly deal to help sign talent around him, then managed to pedal a narrative that makes him the cause of the mess

5 – Our GM is now coaching too. Coach Baakle is a real quality coach

The final evidence is that at least the Browns wanted to sign Harbaugh up, they also have an owner that however deluded he is, does actually care about his team.

Sorry Mike, but it’s not even close. The 9ers are the worst franchise by miles. #accountabilty

    ______________

Haslam will probably have the homeless guy pick the new coach before he selects a new GM.

Browns fans deserve so much better

  13. I might be wrong .it wouldn’t be the first time but there is a chance that Pet sticks around ?. his teams didn’t quit on him . they played hard to the end . we were just outgunned . that’s on Farmer for poor drafting & some of his free agents didn’t play up to expectations . Bowe comes to mind .

  14. Well said Cornhusker44 you make a lot of valid points but i think the Brownies still have the 49er’s beat in the “worst franchise” department…give it another 10 years then lets see where things stand….

  15. Farmer was at the game. At least Haslam let him keep his credentials for one last hurrah.

Saddest sight at the game? CBS sideline reporter talking about Pettine likely being fired – as she was standing about 15 feet away from him.

What a brutal business this is.

  16. Atten Readers, Do not listen to all these arm chair experts because Coach Pattine is a great coach and WILL NOT BE FIRED!

Yes, you heard it here first, Pettine will NOT BE FIRED. All of you guys that think he will, will eat a big plate of crow and you will remember me that called it first. Yes i am a true prophetic football analyst.

    Regards

  17. Edit: misspelled Pettine, fixed

They showed him in the box during the game, so they fired him but said please stick around and eat our food and drink our booze as a parting gift?

    Factory of sadness strikes again!

  19. Best of Luck Ray. Don;t feel bad. Vince Lombardi and Bill Walsh combined wouldn’t be able to turn the cleveland mess into a winner. Better days are ahead for you Sir. Good Luck.

  20. How Farmer got a GM job anywhere after being the Pro Player Personnel director during the worst period in Chiefs history, I’ll never know.

He was less qualified than Jerry Jones.
