Report: Chandler Jones overdosed on pills

Getty Images

The reason for a weekend trip to the hospital by Patriots defensive lineman Chandler Jones initially wasn’t know. According to Chris Curtis, producer of WEEI’s Dennis & Callahan Show, it now is.

Curtis reports, citing unnamed police sources, that Jones overdosed on pills on Saturday night. An ambulance transported Jones to Norwood Hospital.

The pills taken by Jones aren’t known. In theory, he could be subject to NFL action if the substance has been banned by the NFL. The medical records generated by the trip to the hospital undoubtedly contained information regarding what Jones ingested.

Automatic suspension would arise only if the compound is a PED. For street drugs, an initial violation would result at worst in placement in the league’s substance-abuse program, along with enhanced testing. Multiple violations typically are required before a suspension occurs.

UPDATE 8:37 p.m. ET: The report from WEEI initially claimed that the overdose happened at teammate Rob Gronkowski’s house. That tweet has been deleted, replaced by a new one that reiterates the overdose report, but that does not say where it occurred.

  1. The Jones brothers should just chill out and smoke some marijuana. Why are they always upping the ante and messing with higher grade substances? For those that don’t know…his brother is the best fighter in the world, Jon Jones, who loves the nose candy.

  2. At Gronks house too ? Sounds like Bell when he’s at Blount’s house. Seriously tho I hope Chandler Jones is alright and if it’s PED’s then hope action is taken right away.

  3. check your sources he may have been at Gronk’s house but he wasn’t with Gronk, he was in Florida all weekend.

  4. An overdosed person shows up at the police department. They send him to a hospital and don’t file anything. This police department is in Foxboro, the player is a New England Patriot, and said team plays in the playoffs this weekend. Just saying.

  5. Was Gronk also using?
Also, a few months back I made a comment about the opiate painkiller epidemic in the NFL and college, I even said someone needs be the face of it (Brett Favre), and I received nothing but thumbs downs. Maybe this incident will open some people’s eyes.
    Get well, Jones.

  6. Geez I hope this guy is ok. I’d like to see the final report before thinking too much into this. An over dose could happen by taking one pill, if it was the wrong pill. Plus, the term “overdose” might have been inaccurate. This guy is a baller and he’s a good kid. He may have just had a bad reaction to something.

Hmm…friend claimed he met and spoke to Gronk in Florida over the weekend. Something doesn’t add up.

  8. What the heck happened this weekend?? Gronk. Black eyed Bill. Jones OD. People missing from practice. Awaiting the Deadspin article. Not good.

At least Jones went to the police / fire station. That’s encouraging, in a way.

  9. Where is all of this PED speculation coming from. Don’t think I ever heard of anyone OD’ing on Dbol.

More likely pain killers and Molly caps.

  10. Wow been a long time since the Pats run to the SB was this shaky going into their first playoff game….Brady in court with the league for cheating, this guy overdosing on some drug, Belicheat got a black eye from somebody, Gronk in FL in a blonde wig and fake mustache, Kraft and his 20 something girlfriend are back on again, both WR are limping around, loss the last 3 or 4 ball games….so afraid of the Steelers that they lost a game on purpose so they wouldn’t have to face that decimated team, WEEI deleting tweets, looking more and more like the Goat will lose his 2nd playoff game at home this weekend…….

  11. Drug problems are no joke. NFL suspends guys for weed. What do they do about pills?

People are dying from opiates and synthetic drugs at record pace where I live. 4 people last week.

  12. For all we know right now he could have OD on Tylenol or cough syrup. I think anyone who listens to chandlers weekly radio appearances would say this guy does not come off as a “party animal”. As far as Gronk is concerned I read an article and saw pictures online of him in Florida this past weekend. Stop jumping to conclusions.

Got a selfie poc of a friends with Gronkowski at the airport in FL. My friends son wasn’t lying, he sent proof

  14. So much speculation with out a single shred of fact. The fact that he didn’t miss a meeting or practice the last 2 days seems to show it wasn’t much serious, and I doubt they were illegal drugs since Jones lives within walking distance of the police station in town and went there himself.

That isn’t something you see many people doing if they are doing illegal drugs. But that would be me just speculating.

  15. Peyton gets hgh sent to his house in his wife’s name from a clinic that got busted for importing hgh illegally from China and nothing comes of it. A patriot takes a couple of extra pain killers for his injury and the haters come out en masses with their nonsense. Must suck to not be part of pats nation.

  16. Yeah – most people who suspect they might be having a reaction to illegal drugs go straight to the police station. The rabid delusional haters are out in full force. Like flies to the Jets.

  17. This is hilarious. I rememeber when Randy Moss beat his girlfriend in Florida 48 hours before SB 42, too.

    Except it never happened.

The media likes to work to make things up to try to distract the Pats.

Goodell works in mysterious ways, don’t ya think?

Hey! Is Gomer suspended for 4 games for accepting HGH at his residence?

  18. It really shouldn’t matter and his medical records should be private. If he tests for a banned substance, that’s different. If he is stopped for DUI, that is different. For obvious reasons.

  19. There is a bigger story coming. Belichick is done in Foxboro. Going home for one last challenge, to rebuild the franchise that holds his heart. Kraft, Mara, Goodell have details worked out. Patriots “compensation” will include picks to balance those stolen in bogus Deflategate punishment. 1/12/2016. Mark it.

  20. Overdose is a really generic term. The NFL gives out painkillers like they’re candy. Don’t get me wrong, my love for the Broncos and NFL is unmatched, but these guys are killing themselves on the field, and are living in pain.

This is inevitable to a certain extent. I’m actually surprised that this doesn’t happen more often. Some of this medicine is really dangerous. Mixing alcohol is a death sentence waiting to happen. There is not a shred if evidence alcohol was involved, so I don’t mean to presume.

Best of luck to him, We wish him the best.

  21. To the people implicating Gronk: He absolutely WAS in Florida and there are multiple articles to prove it, a simple google search would save you all the trouble of wrongfully accusing someone of a serious crime. Whatever Chandler got involved in, Gronk wasn’t a part of it.

  22. Something the conspiracy theorists should consider before opening their mouths:

Local police didn’t exactly go out of their way to protect Aaron Hernandez when he was being investigated. Both were pro bowlers and equally important to the team.

This? Pretty much a non-issue. Guy didn’t miss a practice, and no doubt went there because of EMTs. The nearest hospital emergency room is a good 20 minute drive away from his home both north and south.

  23. been there, done that…many times a cry for help…
here’s hoping he exercises his demons…I don’t care what team he plays for…a life is a life, and very short…

  24. You don’t OD on PED’s. All NFL players are fighting injuries, there is big time prescription drugs that they take to manage pain. It could well have been that Jones accidentally took too many. As for Gronk, WEEI pulled that one for a reason. Gronk was not in NE and their original story was wrong.

  25. jones has monster game, belichick pours it on, won’t call off the wolves and pats win by at least 20 if not 30

brady will have all his passing weapons and will be unstoppable. NE will score at east. a veritable track meet.

  26. Pats fans are ridiculous. I’ve never heard of anyone OD’ing on Tylenol or cough syrup. Could it be the guy just had some issues and takes drugs? Oh no, that can’t be it, that’s not real or possible for the highly touted patriots franchise…

  27. So much speculation with out a single shred of fact. The fact that he didn’t miss a meeting or practice the last 2 days seems to show it wasn’t much serious, and I doubt they were illegal drugs since Jones lives within walking distance of the police station in town and went there himself.

Simple reasoning here, It’s playoff time and Goodell from his office at 15, 1185 Ave of the Americas, New York, NY Has instructed his ESPN cronies to publish another “annual” detraction against the patriots in the hopes that it will be enough to have them lose and create more patriots animosity. The last thing Goodell wants is to stand up on a podium and present the Lombardi Trophy to TB12 and BB. Let’s see what happens next after KC loses Saturday afternoon.

  28. Based on some of the comments here, people flock to Pats articles for the sole purpose of ragging on Pats fans.

    #IdiotGate

  29. The New England Patriots had near-perfect practice attendance five days before their postseason opener against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Safety/special-teams ace Nate Ebner was the lone player not spotted at Monday’s practice. Ebner wore a cast on his right arm during the Patriots’ two walk-through sessions last week.

If there was something serious going on Chandler wouldn’t be at practice Monday and Tuesday. The report on TV was that Gronk missing Tuesday practice was precautionary.

    RELAX…

  30. Sad that a weekend off means “let’s do stupidity” for some of these guys. God forbid just relax and spend quality, drug free, time with fiends and family.

  31. Still the greatest team of all time. If he od’d, he’s a freakin moron and he should get in trouble. But let’s see what happened, we all know how initial reports can be. Hahahaha #idealgaslaw

  32. So, a police department and radio station were complicit in covering this up. The Patriots hoped nobody would find out, especially the nfl. No mention of it until the story broke and it wasn’t reported to the league or on the injury report. The Patriots are pathetic!

  33. Ya Pats fans nothing unusual about players hanging out at Gronk’s house partying while Gronk’s is supposed to be in Florida. Maybe Jones didn’t have HBO at his house or any X either. Way to prepare for the playoffs.

  34. “That isn’t something you see many people doing if they are doing illegal drugs.”

    ——–

Most people think it was a painkiller situation.

    Those are legal. Likely prescribed.

    And easy to OD on.

    **********************************************

The job of the Police is to Protect and Serve. Apparently Chandler experienced something unexpected, and went to the police. Perhaps someone put something in his drink? Regardless, he was back a practice ASAP, so it sounds minor. In addition, what charges should they be filing? Or are you simply blinded by your jealousy and envy, hoping against hope that some how, some way, your ignorant rantings will make a negative difference in his life?

  37. I’m listening to the police dispatch recordings of the incident now, via PatsPulpit, who scooped PFT in finding out that these were class D substances. Class D involves marijuana (which wouldn’t exactly be a pill overdose) but also includes medications for anxiety, sleep disorders and recovering from surgery.

Aaron Hernandez already won the prize for worst criminal. Does anyone actually believe Jones would show up to the police station if he had done a bunch of illegal drugs?

  38. Gronk was in Florida. He and Chandler Jones are buddies. Jones was probably just over at Gronk’s house.

  39. Drug problems are no joke. NFL suspends guys for weed. What do they do about pills?
    ===
They hand them out like candy. How do you think the players deal with the pain of playing and of the multiple surgeries they go through? Assuming it was legally prescribed pills, I’m just amazed that we don’t see guys react badly like this more often. Opiates are powerful stuff…

  40. Dispatch audio says he was involved with a “Class D ” substance – which in MA means – MJ or barbiturates. Since everyone’s talking about pills, it’s probably the latter.

The former is good for anxiety, insomnia, epilepsy, or any time you need a hypnotic sedative. I once was prescribed Zofran, phenobarbital and Vicodin at the same time when I had an excruciating bout of food poisoning. I don’t remember much about that week. It’s entirely possible that I walked half-naked to the local police station too.

My money in this incident is on bad reaction or dosing error.

  41. If anyone would have legit prescribed painkillers at his house it’s Gronk. I know the man is tough but the list of injuries he has had in the past couple years must be pretty painful.

  42. Lets see…..HGH positively shipped to Manning household….swept under rug.

Vague reports here…Mr. Integrity will be moving fast to suspend….pats are involved….lets watch.

  43. They all miss Aar0n badly at these parties. The New England night life & parties just haven’t been the same without number 81 lookin’ out for what he would deem to be behavior unbecoming & taking care of the distractions himself.

  44. Not seeing this anywhere else, so I suspect no one has supported with a second source yet.

  45. Him and Gronk are best buds.. So maybe they live together …… Anyway NE is do to get upset this weekend.

  46. You won’t hear another word about Gronk, the media refuses to call him out for his immature, childish behavior for some odd reason. Maybe if he wasn’t white or wasn’t named Manziel?

    Which pills?

Idiot commenters learn nothing from past witch hunts.

You’ve never heard of anyone accidentally ODing on acetaminophen, barbituates, or opioid-based analgesics or having some sort of a bad interaction? You should call the FDA and tell them that the don’t need to put a warning label on products containing acetaminophen that says, “Do not use this product with other medications that contain acetaminophen…”

BTW: Intentional acetaminophen ingestion is a common way for teens to try and kill themselves when they don’t have access to firearms.

    Love the excuses…lmao
You only OD on acetaminophen if you take a ton of vicodin/lortabs/percocets (etc) or if you are trying to kill yourself… Well it turns out it wasn’t tylenol!!! DUR!!!!!!!!!
