Colts reaching out to Joe Philbin about line coach job

AP

Former Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin could be getting back in the game.

According to Andrew Abramson of the Palm Beach Post, the Colts have reached out to Philbin for a job on Chuck Pagano’s staff.

Pagano promoted Rob Chudzinski to offensive coordiantor, but they’re believed to be talking to Philbin about an offensive line coaching position.

Philbin was fired four games into last season, and was 24-28 in three years and change with the Dolphins. Prior to that, he coached offensive line and tight ends for the Packers before getting promoted to coordinator in 2007.

  1. He should be offered or getting a QB coaches job. It was reported yesterday he wanted to draft Derek Carr when he was HC of the ‘phins. Meaning he knows QB talent when he see’s it.

  2. As A Dolphins fan ,I liked him. He knows his x and o’s,he’s a good evaluator of talent but lacked leadership skills which was his undoing.I wish him the best.

  3. Yea, cause like his O lines @ Miami were so good and all. Clueless Joe went into the season with the 2 worst guards in the NFL and thought they were fine… good luck Colts.

P.S. He WILL pick up the garbage in the locker room however.

  4. Seems like all those people who were OC’s have to go back to a position coach after getting fired as a HC.

If you’re a great OC or DC, just stay there…

  5. Woo hoo !

They want the guy who put together that awful Oline in Miami that gets Tannehill killed all the time ?

Another stoned out of his mind move by Irsay.

  6. With Philbin the players will be treated to very precise Power Point presentation and not much else.

  7. Not sure why Philbin would be hired to coach o-line. Pretty sure the o-line at GB allowed a lot of sacks when he was there, and Miami’s o-line was never addressed while he was in Miami… Nice guy though

  8. I hope he does better if he goes to the Colts, than he did with the Dolphins. It was a disaster say no more. Maybe the Colts should have thought about Dan Campbell, he has a much better personality, and tries very hard, and the Dolphins will miss him.

  9. Because these clowns haven’t embarrassed this franchise enough in this young offseason. Yeah let’s bring another clown onboard so there’s even less reason to take us seriously. Ugh.

Yeah, that Belichick guy should have just stayed being a DC, and Arians should have just stayed being an OC.

Most head coaches were once coordinators.

  11. Yea, because nothing says a great line coach like your last QB being the most sacked qb three years running.

  12. Seriously guys… for those of you who are saying that he is “finding his level” or that coaching an O Line would be “low energy”… You all do realize that O Lineman are the meanest dirtiest nastiest players on a football team 99% of the time. Typically the baddest MF’ers on the team, and require the most in-depth coach.

Maybe Sleepy Joe isn’t the right guy to coach an O Line because of his demeanor, but to generalize all OL coaches as being somehow less of a coach as others on a staff is blatantly wrong. See Mike Tice, Doug Marrone, Aaron Kromer, Mike Munchak, Bill Callahan, Tom Cable. All current OL Coaches in the NFL who have been NFL HCs in the past.

If you don’t like Philbin, its OK. Just don’t say something that isn’t true about the position.

  13. I think the offensive line coach is by far the most important assistant coach. The line has to work as one unit. It’s like a chain that’s only as strong as it’s weakest link. All five guys have to have a successful play or else there could be problems. So many offensive linemen are being asked to do more than they can handle. A good coach knows the strengths and weaknesses of each guy, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of all the defensive linemen around the league. This guy needs to live in the film room. This isn’t a job for a lazy guy. You can be quiet. Just can’t be lazy.

  14. Lets see here:

    Joe Philbin Miami OL resume:

Can’t develop two 3rd round picks into starters

OL allows mosts sacks during his HC tenure

Most sacked QB during his HC tenure

RB has only 6 10oyd games in 4 years

  15. Where is his history of strong coaching the o-line? It wasn’t with Miami. And when the Packers won it they were decimated with injuries.
