The number of head coaching openings around the league is starting to drop with the Browns and Giants finding their men on Wednesday.
The Eagles have reportedly turned their attention toward Tom Coughlin, who has also interviewed with the 49ers since parting ways with the Giants. The 49ers may have a different experienced head coach in their sights.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the team’s interest in Mike Shanahan has “ramped up considerably” since they interviewed him earlier this week. There was a lot of chatter about their interest in hiring Hue Jackson heading into this week, but Jackson is now in Cleveland and Dirk Koetter, who also interviewed, appears to be closing in on a move from offensive coordinator to head coach in Tampa.
Shanahan has been a head coach with the Raiders, Broncos and Redskins and spent three years as the 49ers’ offensive coordinator under George Seifert from 1992 to 1994. He has been out of the NFL the last two seasons, but interviewed for head coaching jobs last offseason as well.
