Report: 49ers interest in Mike Shanahan “has ramped up considerably”

The number of head coaching openings around the league is starting to drop with the Browns and Giants finding their men on Wednesday.

The Eagles have reportedly turned their attention toward Tom Coughlin, who has also interviewed with the 49ers since parting ways with the Giants. The 49ers may have a different experienced head coach in their sights.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the team’s interest in Mike Shanahan has “ramped up considerably” since they interviewed him earlier this week. There was a lot of chatter about their interest in hiring Hue Jackson heading into this week, but Jackson is now in Cleveland and Dirk Koetter, who also interviewed, appears to be closing in on a move from offensive coordinator to head coach in Tampa.

Shanahan has been a head coach with the Raiders, Broncos and Redskins and spent three years as the 49ers’ offensive coordinator under George Seifert from 1992 to 1994. He has been out of the NFL the last two seasons, but interviewed for head coaching jobs last offseason as well.

  1. I don’t even know how to feel about this one. On one hand, he kind of drove RG3 into the ground when he was with the REDSKINS. On the the other hand, he did win 2 super bowls with the Broncos although he had Elway, and also with the Niners in 94. He’s a little above a 50% winning coach. At least it’s someone who has experience. But, I think somehow Baalke and Dork will screw this up, and we’ll keep on sucking.

  2. Why would anyone talk to Shanahan? He has accomplished nothing Without John Elway on his team.

  3. Shanahan won with Elway and Davis. Now he’ll have Gabbert and Draughn. Good luck there buddy.

  4. You might as well hire Lovie Smith.

He won 10 games like Shanahan in 2012 and at least went back up after going down.

All Shanahan does is overuse running backs and makes QBs go crazy to the point where they don’t want to play anymore.

If you were upset with what Kubiak did with Manning early on, you’ll really go crazy because Shanahan is the Kubiak version of “my way” everyday.

    He can’t coach anymore!

  5. Mike will want roster control. Baalke won’t give it to him. IF fr some reason this actually happens, it’s like lighting the fuse on a powderkeg.

  6. This would be a great hire for the Niners. Shanahan got a raw deal in DC. He had Griffin forced down his throat, and even when he publicly stated that Griffin was years away from being a competent pro quarterback, able to operate within a pro system, the ownership made him play Griffin. He correctly stated that Cousins was the right quarterback for the Skins, and never backed away from that. The guy is smart, a great game planner, and will bring in a very quality coaching staff. Just do not let him have anything to do with the personnel side of things.

  7. Shanahan? His 2 rings came courtesy of the worst-fined episodes in league history (the two massive Broncos’ salary cap violations). If you remove those violated years, he’s worse than a .500 coach, as his Skins (24-40) and Raiders (8-12) records show.

  8. I hope it happens.
    Because I don’t really like the 49ers.

Shanny is a repeated failure as a head coach. It has been decades since he’s accomplished anything. Completely unqualified.

Why would anyone talk to Shanahan? He has accomplished nothing Without John Elway on his team.

So, you wouldn’t talk to Belichick if he was available?

  10. Shanahan is a damn good coach but a TERRIBLE GM. His ego also gets in the way at times. Are the 49ers sure they want this guy? They could do worse, I guess.

  11. With SF’s climate he won’t be able to get away with his “they were really cold” excuse the next time the refs discover his linebackers are coated in grease.

  12. Repeated failure as a Head Coach? Andy Reid is a repeated failure. Shanny has 2 rings. He had RG Me forced on him by ownership and always felt Kris cousins was the right guy. Turns out he was right. Good move for San Fran

  13. Lol, go ahead and hire boardwalk Elvis and get that first pick for the Clemson qb next year.

  14. If the 9ers hire Shanahan, Kaepernick won’t be quarterbacking the team. All you cats with the sloppy man crush on Kaepernick will have to change teams and follow the other teams practice squad if you want to continue the mysterious Kaepernick worship.

  15. Why is Shanahan interested in being the coach of worst managed team in the league? Surely he already has enough money to live comfortably for his remaining days. Is he a glutton for punishment or is he just yanking Jed’s chain?

  16. Compared to who is out there and the 49er management being in need of an experienced coach, this looks like a good hire. The front office is on the hot seat and they must get a coach that is not on a learning curve. If he becomes the head coach his nickname will be “Slash” he’s scary looking and the players are going to listen very carefully to the head ball boy.

  17. More likely it’s Mike Shanahan’s agent leaking this stuff in hopes of manufacturing interest in him.

He’s a train wreck. No one is going to hire him.

  18. Why would anyone talk to Shanahan? He has accomplished nothing Without John Elway on his team.

and what has belichik done without brady? walsh without montana?

  19. It makes complete sense to hire a borderline senile HC who last achieved success over 20 years ago, and who not only was a disastrous failure in his last job but also purposely destroyed the health of his teams young franchise QB out of spite and bitterness. But you guys go right ahead.

  20. 49ers must do something quick! Shanahan is better than most, he doesn’t bow down to pressure from the top of the office, that’s for sure. Keeping his own council is more and more needed in this league, in the face of meddlesome ownership that rips apart locker rooms. Shanahan would do well in checking up on Wil Muschamp over at Texas Tech as a defensive coordinator or assistant. He is a young and fresh face to football despite his time as hc at Florida. Great motivator and no nonsense to office politics and game officials.

  21. You want to know why someone would want Mike then look at the current Redskins team that made the playoffs.

He drafted almost every single 1 of their top tier players.
Trent Williams-yep. Jordan Reed-yep, Kirk-yep the list goes on.

With Mike comes a 1000yrd rusher also. Instantly..remember when Alfred Morris was a household name and you wonder why you haven’t seen him in two years… the two years Mike hasn’t been coaching that team. The talents gotten better the runnign game worse.

  22. Why would anyone talk to Shanahan? He has accomplished nothing Without John Elway on his team.

Walsh didn’t do too bad with Steve Young.

  23. Elway is a 500 QB without Shanahan and never won a playoff game without him. He won the NFC East with an entire new offense in 2012 with RG3 who will never start again in the NFL. The best coaching job he ever did was with Washington. 10 draft choices or free agents were instrumental in their success on offense this year not even talking about Cousins. Every QB who has started for him for 2 years has been to the pro bowl, playoffs and the top 5 in offense in half their years as a starter. Look at the stats and 3 Super Bowls. By the way 49er fans he had the best 3 years on offense than any 3 year time frame in the history of San Fran.

  24. Good hire IF baalke does not screw up the draft & free agencey.
Niners have about $50 million in cap space this year.

  25. What other team will pay you $14 million to coach one season and lead the team to a top 5 draft pick?

  26. 49ers fans…

Browns fans know what’s going on because what you’re going through was literally their last two head coaching searches.

They line up all the best candidates to interview who basically walk into the room. Have a five minute conversation with the front office and owner and then run out as fast as they can taking the first job offered to them after that interview that isn’t with San Francisco. Heck Hue Jackson even said during his press conference the reason he went to Cleveland was the Front office.

The reason the Browns always had to settle for the candidate no one else wanted the last two searches is they had a guy named Joe Banner running the team that no one wanted to work for because he was the dumbest guy in the room who thought he was smarter than everyone. Looking at Baalke and Yorks track record I can definitely see they went to the Joe Banner school of running a football team (to the ground). Banner got fired and this time around the Browns were considered an attractive job. Now if you can only get owner Jr. and his crony to fire themselves you’ll be back to the NFC title hunt in no time.

    ——————————————————–

I here Steve Young was pretty good under Walsh.

Also Belichick has had winning seasons with Vinnie Tesdeverde (Cleveland), Drew Bledsoe and Matt Cassel (Patriots).

Or was that a rhetorical question.

  28. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make this happen….

If Mike gets the HC job hopefully we can count on him hiring his son as OC and the Falcons can be saved from another year of the “Quarterback Killer”.

Since it appears Dan Quinn will not fire Kyle despite his negative impact on the Falcons offense, the only hope of getting rid of this pariah is for his daddy to hire him away.

  29. Plummer without Shanahan is 35 per cent won loss record at Arizona. With Shanahan 73 per cent won loss record at Denver. Plummer beat Brady with a 10 game playoff winning streak. Regular season Plummer won more games than Elway during regular season. Both starting for 4 years with Shanahan. Just the facts!

  30. Anyone that says the same regurgitated nonsense about Shanahan not winning without Elway needs to actually think instead of repeating what they’ve heard other people say. Elway didn’t win anything without Shanahan either. And neither one of them won anything without Terrell Davis. It takes a complete team to win a title, and Shanahan has proved himself capable of putting together a complete team.

And to all the other people that like to say like he did something bad to RG3, if this season didn’t fully justify all of Shanahan’s choices I don’t know what would. RG3 has proven himself to be a prima donna and now yet another head coach has sat him down in favor of his backup. Shanahan drafted Cousins because he didn’t have faith in RG3 in the first place, and what do you know, he’s been totally vindicated for his choices. Griffin himself has proven Shanahan right.

The only mistake the 49ers could make at this point would be to not hire him.

  31. Shanahan has ethical challenges – a bit like Clinton – so why would you even think of appointing him?

  32. I’d like to see it. The older I get, the more I root for the old guys looking for one last chance. The Denver run was fun to watch. Washington was a train wreck. Can he do it one last time? Is it really all about lucking into a special quarterback?

It seems like every failure by one of these multi-SuperBowl winning coaches diminishes the rest just a bit…

  33. He’ll be a good fit as long as they don’t let him make personnel decisions. He called it right on Cousins, but there were a lot of misses during his time in Washington.

  34. The 49ers’ last 4 coaches, Mike Nolan, Mike Singletary, Jim Harbaugh, and Jim Tomsula, had never been NFL head coaches. None were proven at the NFL level. Shanahan has already proven that he is good enough to win multiple super bowls with good enough talent. That may just be the very thing that eliminates him from consideration. If they hired Shanny and couldn’t win, the arrow would be pointing at Baalke. Baalke ain’t hiring Shanny.

  35. Shannahan is a fantastic coach…..if he can bring back John Elway in his prime.

What a train wreck SF has become. Baalke and Co. make every other team look like a smooth operation.

  36. Mike Shanahan will turn the Niners from 5-11 to 6-10. Maybe even 7-9 by the end of his second year. Great hire!

  37. How do you go from talking to an ostensibly receptive, quality coach like Coughlin, to even considering the hot mess that is Shanny? But this is the 9ers afterall.

  38. He only won because he had a great QB and running back. Ummm DERP! He also had a quality defense. BUH FRIGGIN DUH! Who else grabbed a 7th round RB and got 2000 yrds one season and 1900 another season? Who else realized that as good as Elway was to get to multiple SBs, he needed a run game to WIN multiple SBs? Huh? Was it Dan Reeves? No. So, you have someone that has a QB that’s been to the SB multiple times with other coaches and lost versus one that comes in, gives a run game and decent defense and proceeds to win 2 SBs and you armchair experts say he can’t coach, never did anything, and is a ….. wait for it…… more expert analysis. … ratface. SF would be upgraded immediately with this hire.

  40. Something interesting about America right now … Coughlin and Shanahan as attractive candidates for head coaching jobs, Hillary, Bernie and the Donald leading the pack for the Presidency. Hillary, Bernie or The Donald get the job, they will be the oldest President ever inaugurated for their first term.

I don’t know what the word or phrase for “the opposite of the youth movement” is.

    LOL

  41. The poor 9ers fans, this is just awful. This guy is so overrated as a coach- someone pointed out that when you take away the Broncos 2 cheating the salary cap years, he is under .500 lifetime.

At least he won’t have to pay Gabbert and Draughn under the table, lol.

  42. If he is hired, does this mean he will be giving his players polygraph tests like he did in Denver?

Regular season Plummer won more games than Elway during regular season. Both starting for 4 years with Shanahan. Just the facts!

    —————

So let’s try to understand those facts….

Plummer was a great QB, the problem in AZ back then was, the team was crap. He carried the team on his shoulders… but since he was human, he couldn’t overcome the team’s deficiencies all the time.

In Denver, he had a good team, and thus won more.

If you are trying to attribute Jake Plummers differential in winning percentage on SHANAHAN, well that’s where you are wrong.

It wasn’t Shanahan that made the difference, it was the talent level difference between the two franchises.

But they weren’t satisfied with his performance, so they shipped him off to TB where he promptly retired.

Meanwhile as others have stated, Shanahan won his Superbowl titles around 20 years ago, and has many opportunities since then with other teams and other QB’s.

His last decent shot was with RGIII, and he put him back out there CLEARLY INJURED and destroyed not only the future of RGIII, but the team and likely his last real shot at another title.

Shanahan is clearly a retread coach, and he simply doesn’t have it anymore. He’s way past his coaching prime, and everything after Elway has shown… he wasn’t really a great coach, he was just a decent coach with a great roster.

Now he’s an old, formerly decent coach, perhaps inheriting a disaster for a roster. IF the Niners go that way… good luck.

  44. Oh and some have said it would be an upgrade to hire Shanahan.

    This is TRUE.

But only because Tomsula was such a horrible moron coach.

An upgrade from that is a very low bar, and just because it would be an ‘upgrade’, doesn’t mean it’s enough to matter.

    On a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being Tomsula, I’d give Shanahan a 3…

So yeah.. it’s an upgrade… but they’d still be behind almost everyone else.

  45. THEY CALL THEMSELVES THE FAITHFUL (LOL!)
THAT’S WHY THE STADIUM WAS HALF EMPTY LAST SEASON.

  46. Shanahan is desperate to coach again, and the 9ers are desperate to get a big name coach. Because if they don’t get somebody like Shanahan, they will have to hire another Tomsula.
