New Rams logo has no real changes (other than the obvious one)

Earlier this week, the St. Louis Rams became the Los Angeles Rams. The team with a new city now has a logo.

Other than the obvious, it’s not much different than the old one.

Which, especially in light of the ongoing use of gold in the logo, means that the Rams likely will be keeping the gold horns adopted in 2000, the year after the Rams won the Super Bowl. Many believe that they should make a full-time shift back to the yellow horns. And a cynic would suggest that maybe they will.

For now, the smart business play is to return to L.A. in their current uniforms, sell plenty of jerseys, hats, helmets (miniature and full-size), and then make a permanent change back to the old-school yellow-and-blue at some point down the road.

Maybe when Kroenkeworld opens in 2019. Maybe later.

In the interim, the Rams can break out the yellow-horned helmets from time to time, as they currently do. And when they switch back to yellow and blue, they can periodically change the horns to white, Roman Gabriel-style, selling a bunch of blue-and-white jerseys and helmets and whatnot.

Regardless, these decisions will be based not on what looks good or resonates with fans who never rooted for the gold-horned Rams. These decisions will be based on business. Specifically, the business of maximizing the extent to which people will part with their money.

  1. Yeah that’s also why Manziel will be on the Cowboys practice squad, they’ll sell his practice jersey and then cut him after his first pre-season game.

  2. Now that the Rams are in LA, is Kroenke going to flip this team once the stadium is built?

  3. Earlier this week, the St. Louis Rams became the Los Angeles Rams……Technically didn’t they return to where they ran from last time (1994) because the fan base stopped supporting them????

I mean good teams who win at least a few years a decade keep fan bases and stay in their cities…..losers keep playing the city lease roulette….. for cash and new stadiums but they still suck…..you can polish a dog turd but it is still a dog turd…..Rams, Browns, Raiders……

  4. I feel sorry for the St Louis fans but not as sorry as I would have felt for the Los Angeles fans if the Vikings would have moved there.

  5. St. Louis future plans:

    1. build new, just good enough NFL stadium within next 5 years. Just keep putting the facility on the taxpayer tab in the form of bonds.
    2. after two years of truck and tractor pulls and a few high school championship games, decide it’s time to find an NFL team.
    3. negotiate with billionaire NFL owner(s) trying to get new stadium in their city to move to STL from position of weakness and give away farm.
    4. cry and whine when said billionaire owner expects terms of agreement be upheld.

Oh wait, sorry, that was last time.

  6. St. Louis has had their chance. They’ve failed to support two NFL franchises and and the NBA failed there also. It’s not really a good sports town as they would have you believe.

  7. Go back to the old LA Rams uniforms.

Also, move the Colts back to Baltimore and the Ravens back to Cleveland. The Cardinals back to St. Louis.

    Move the Browns to Arizona.

  8. My assumption is this is just a quick redo of the existing logo to get the site saying LA Rams without doing a redesign. If you watch the “coming home” video on the site they show nothing but the alternates/throwbacks in the highlights, which leads me to believe a larger makeover that includes the LA Rams colors prior to moving.

Actually, if the Raiders situation in Oakland is impossible to continue there without building a new stadium on the current site (including relocation of both them and the A’s while a new stadium is built that could even include the A’s having to play at Levi’s Stadium for a few years), then St. Louis could wind up with the Raiders without doing more than renovating the Edwards Jones Dome (as that was due to a renovation anyway) as that would be an improvement over what is the case in Oakland. The NFL could sweeten the post to make that happen if that is the case.

As for the Rams uniforms, the NFL I believe requires at least one year’s notice, so even if they wanted to return to the old jerseys, the NFL had to have been notified last year for that. Probably when they go into the new stadium they would change.

Um…..no. The fanbase never stopped supporting them. They left because they were stuck in a horrible stadium lease and because Georgia Frontiere, who inherited the team, consulted an astrologist on major business decisions.

  11. The blue/white uni’s would be classic, but the blue/yellow would also be a serious improvement over the pissgold/blue worn in st.louis.

Los Angeles Rams <— just looks/feels great!

  12. Now all they need is
Vince Feragamo, Lawrence McCutcheon, Jack Youngblood and Deacon Jones. of course if they could locate Roman Gabriel, they could return to their glory years.

  13. Pats fan here, but very glad to see the Rams back in L.A. where they belong.

Can’t agree on the gaudy blue and yellow, though. If not the navy and gold, then some form of the original blue and white would be the best-looking uniforms.

  14. Didn’t those LA Rams have a pretty good tackle named Grier? I always wonder why he is never mentioned when “good old days” are discussed.

  15. Agreed. IF they are coming home, come home as we want them in the Rams yellow and blue uniforms.

You are already bringing one of the worst head coaches of the past 50 years and will have a losing record or perhaps an 8-8 record.

  16. I bet the creative department logged a ton of extra hours changing the “St. Louis” to “Los Angeles.”

Amazing how the Vikings Haters come out of their burrows to make totally irrelevant insulting comments in any article, no matter what the subject. It’s nice to be a longtime Vikings fan, watching the team getting better and better, rather than one of the lower-intellect types who see their teams slowly circling the drain, and feel it necessary to spew venom at the better team at every opportunity.

I’m sure this will be deleted by the PFT police, but it was satisfying to get off my chest.

  18. I love the idea of substituting the “s” with “$”! Seriously, the yellow and blue is far better than the current gold. The current colors look like Notre Dame. Congrats to LA for getting the Rams. You should say a prayer of thanks to the late Senator Tom Eagleton and the rest of the committee that gave the Rams the opt out in their lease.

    Fearsome Foursome, Roman Gabriel colors.
    Those Unis were the best

Yeah, for like 10 of their 50+ years here.

  22. I thought they were going to rename themselves

    LA Lambs.

LA is the first 2 letters in the name Lamb, so perhaps LAmbs for short may be good enough.

  23. @movike: I don’t care if you didn’t like my comment. I truly feel sorry for the St Louis fans for losing their second team, Cardinals being the first and I have no time for the Bidwells because of that. I feel the same way with the “old” Browns moving to Baltimore and becoming the Ravens. With all of the Wilf talk about moving the Vikings before he got his new stadium, I would have felt sorry for L. A. if that would have happened.

  24. Now you’ll get to see how empty a 100,000 seat stadium looks like with 30 to 40 thousand people.

Actually, the fanbase mess in Anaheim was from as I understood it a cover for the real reason: Georgia Frontiere from what I remember was sick and tired of the Rams playing second fiddle to the Lakers (especially during the “showtime” era for the Lakers) and even fifth fiddle behind the Lakers, Dodgers, USC and UCLA Football and wanted to go back to her native Missouri.

A lot of that hasn’t changed and won’t change now even with a shiny new stadium on the site of the former Hollywood Park. To me, it’s been the networks that have wanted this so stars of their shows can “be seen at the game,” looking to bring in female viewers who actually watch Lakers games just for that.
