Titans announce hiring of Mike Mularkey as head coach

The signs were pointing toward Mike Mularkey dropping the interim part of his interim head coach title in Tennessee since the end of the season and the Titans confirmed it on Saturday.

The team announced that Mularkey has been hired as the team’s permanent head coach after formally interviewing for the job on Friday. The team also interviewed Doug Marrone, Teryl Austin and their defensive coordinator Ray Horton for the position after hiring Jon Robinson as their new General Manager earlier in the week.

“The vision Mike presented for our football team during this search as well as the character, integrity, and leadership skills he displayed during the last two months of the season makes him the right coach for the Tennessee Titans,” Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk said in a statement announcing the hiring. “Mike is a quality coach and an outstanding person who will help us build this team the right way. He has experience as a head coach and a track record for developing young quarterbacks and dynamic offenses, and he also brings continuity for our franchise quarterback. We understand this may take time as we rebuild the roster and bring in new coaches for Mike’s staff, but we believe he has the experience and expertise to build a consistent winner.”

Mularkey has had two previous jobs as a head coach and didn’t produce a consistent winner in either place. He was 14-18 in two years as the Bills coach and was fired after going 2-14 with the Jaguars in 2012. He was 2-7 with the Titans this year, leaving him with an 18-39 record overall and a 4-22 record in his last 26 games as a head coach.

With the Lions announcing that Jim Caldwell will remain on the job this week, Mularkey’s hiring will close out the head coaching carousel portion of the offseason schedule barring an unexpected move by one of the final eight teams left standing. There were seven openings and three teams — the Giants, Buccaneers and Titans — stuck with in-house candidates.

  1. How lucky can one be. Get your first head coaching job along with a long term elite QB. There are only a few elite quarter backs in the NFL and he gets one with his first job.

  2. Guess they decided to try and build through High draft picks. Works in baseball will it work in NFL?

  3. As a Titans fan it is encouraging to know we will have back to back first overall picks and a new coach to start the 2017 season. This next one is a write off.

  4. Are the Titans planning to relocate soon too? How the heck you keep Mularky as HC is the same reason you keep Fisher… to kill the fanbase.

  5. I dont normally encourage fans jump ships to other teams. But it’s probably a good time for any Titans fans out there to find another team until the Titans get sold. Their incompetence does not deserve your attention.

  6. It was Amy Adams Strunk’s decision to move Mike Mularkey from Tight ends coach to assistant head coach. Then from AHC to interim coach and then again from interim coach to permanent head coach.

Is it just me or do they have to be sleeping together? lol

His 3rd HC stint, unproven 2nd year QB, dysfunctional ownership and apparently clueless fan base but other than that…

  8. Guess there weren’t any black assistant coaches qualified enough to be head coaches out there, other Hue Jackson (thanks Cleveland)? Argument that the league hires based on merit is bogus and this hire is an example of it

There’s about 20 white coaches more deserving of this job coaching this weekend alone.

But go ahead, play the race card.

  10. Of course they did this. It was the cheapest hiring choice and will therefore allow the absentee ownership to keep using the franchise as its personal ATM machine. Why change? According to Forbes the Titans made $50 million profit in 2014 and it will most likely come in at about the same for 2015. The ownership keeps making the same speech without really saying anything at all. Because it doesn’t need to. And don’t look now but the funding for a new stadium is going to be needed (or at least need to be committed) in about six to seven years.

  11. I feel bad for Mariota. This organization did nothing to help the glimmer of hope on their roster. Everyone in the league zigged to hire a coach to help their QB, then the Titans zagged.

  12. Good offensive mind. Not a very good head coach. Not holding Jacksonville year against him either..

If you want to think I’m playing the race card go ahead be naive and try to deflect from the larger point that I’m making. I’m not speaking about white coaches, I’m only speaking of minority coaches not being afforded the same opportunities as their white counterparts or if they do get the get opportunity they have a shorter leash (for lack of better term).

And someone please tell what is the race card? And why do people try to negate a factual argument with this insult?

  14. For some reason there are guys in all sports who keep getting jobs. As a long suffering Vikings fan, and Mularkey being a former Viking, I think the guy may be cursed.

  15. That’s a bunch of Mularkey.

Boy, this year’s HC class is a real stellar bunch! McAdoo, Mularkey, Pederson, Gase, Kelly. Two years down the line I’m betting two or three of these are gone. After three years, all of ’em.

The NFL needs to look at the obvious age discrimination going on. Dick LeBeau notwithstanding, very few coaches in the older ranks. Bruce Arians oughta feel lucky.

  16. Hahaha, the big loser is Marrone the maroon! Hitless! (maybe he should go to the CFL or back to the colleges)

But why Austin and Horton didn’t get a gig is quite baffling. And why the established folks like Coughlin, Shanahan and Holmgren raises questions as well.

The hiring process in total really needs “further review” by the NFL.

  17. As a long term Titans – Oilers fan I thank all for their condolences.

We are now OFFICIALLY a useless, irrelevant franchise.

I could vent forever now, but I just don’t have it left in me.

I hate being a Titans fan. I deserve better. But I will not get it with this owner and this management team. 2016 season already ruined.

  18. Presume that they are getting ready to sell this franchise, and even in the face of a gazillion dollar payday, Amy Adams Strunk and her advisors are pinching pennies.

Joke of a hire. Might be the greatest guy on the planet, but he is a HORRIFIC head coach. There are some very strong coordinators still in the playoffs, and the Titans would have been smart to wait for the best fit of them all.

Idiotic mis-management. Feel very sorry for Mariotta. Might be a lot of wasted potential there.

Titans suckage to continue. Even after a sale.

  19. This is a great move about time. The last coach was fired mid season and the interim coach was inept by only getting two wins for the rest of the season. This change is well done… what?….they what? They did? He was? Oh….

Well, here’s to five more years of top five picks.

  20. Hey RealTalk15 this is what i found when i googled Race Card is case you still needed an explanation…

Playing the race card is an idiomatic phrase that refers to exploitation of either racist or anti-racist attitudes by accusing others of racism.

  21. They’re already paying Whisenhunt for three more years. I guess they’re going to end up eating two head coaching contracts next year. Even Dan Snyder isn’t this fiscally inept. Keeping Whisenhunt would have been better than this.

  22. All talk of him being a terrible HC goes away if they somehow win. Nobody really cares who is the guy on the sidelines just as long they put up W’ s. Doubt he has the roster for many W’ s,but crazier things have happened in the league.

  23. Mike Mularkey isn’t competent enough to coach powder puff football. I know as a Bills fan when he was atrocious on the sidelines. Feel bad for the Titans. Might be karma from the Music City Miracle!

  24. What a load of horse crap! Screw this team and its ownership. I don’t even want to watch next year. It’s too early to ruin Mariota’s career like this. I don’t understand why they wouldn’t even interview other legitimate candidates. Words can’t describe how frustrated I am. Time to pick another team to root for, because this team won’t have anything to root for…

  25. The Titans, being the first team in need of a new head coach this season, played it soooo cool. They pretended like Mike Mularkey was doing a bad job, in a secret effort to keep other teams from hiring him…even los most games….so they could ultimately grab him before the others got him. The brilliant diversion that threw the othr teams off was interviewing the coordinator who worked for the interim coach. This was the double-secret diversion! Impressive! Now the Titans get to keep BOTH guys.

  26. Sold my PSLs before this season. Glad I got out. This season has been so much more enjoyable for me just watching other teams play while not giving a crap about the Titans. 2016 will be more of the same.

  27. well, feel for ya’ titans fans….looks like you’ll be the next talked about moving team. Keep your chins up.
