The Patriots traded for wide receiver Keshawn Martin in September and they appear to like what they’ve seen from him over the last few months.

Field Yates of reports that the Patriots have signed Martin to a two-year extension that runs through the 2017 season. Martin was set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

Per Yates, Martin stands to make base salaries of $850,000 and $1 million in the next two seasons with a variety of roster bonuses, escalators and incentives that can boost his total earnings. There’s also a $600,000 signing bonus included in the deal.

Martin had 24 catches for 269 yards and two touchdowns in nine games for the Patriots. Receiver Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola and Brandon LaFell are all under contract through next season, although Amendola’s salary of $5 million could make him a possible cut or restructuring target.

  1. Martin was a great pickup this year. He’s done a good job of getting open and for the most part, catching what comes his way. He’s been fairly dependable and as a number 4 or 5…it’s a great role. Congrats to him for getting a nice deal. Modest $ = job security in NE.

Kind of reminds me of how Jabar Gaffney came in and became a trusted and dependable receiver.

  2. Has a much better upside then Lafell. Wouldn’t surprise me to see Martin beat him out in camp next year. A off season working with Jules and playing some catch with Brady could do this kid wonders. If Danny doesn’t restructure he’s gone next year. Need that cap money for defensive players or a possible offer for Alshon to replace Lafell.

  3. I will still be holding my breath if/when I see Keshawn fielding punts for the Pats for the foreseeable future, but I have liked what I have seen of him as a WR.

  4. I think LaFell will be gone next year. He came on strong in the 2nd half of last year and those playoffs, but this year he has been very inconsistent throughout the year.

Last night not getting what play it was at one point and Brady having to clarify it for him is just one example.

He has had a few very good catch and runs, but not enough to keep him on when you look at the downside this year.

  5. .
A few months ago Martin was waived by the Texans. His salary was 600k. Now he receives that in a signing bonus and has a chance to earn up to 3 million over the next two years, just for catching Tom Brady’s pitches.

It is a good deal for both sides. The Patriots get a decent receiver for market price . Martin has a chance to make a name for himself with the Patriots and then hit free agency in two years for a bigger payday.

i would rather cut Lafell and keep Amendola

Totally agree…let Martin have LaFell’s spot. He’s much more dependable .

  7. LaFell needs to learn proper positioning of his hands to catch. The hand attached to the shoulder closest to the incoming ball needs to be on top. Snatch the ball out of the air, more with the fingers than palms. This leaves you in a natural position to tuck the ball under your arm as you continue to run. No more basket catches, bouncing off his chest. Run out your routes. FIGHT for the ball. Come back to the ball if necessary. Know the play book. He looked like a good pickup last year but seems to have lost focus. NOW would be a good time to get it back.
