Vernon Davis continues to be a non-factor in Denver

When the Broncos acquired tight end Vernon Davis in a November trade, they thought they’d added another playmaker to their offense. What they’ve actually gotten is bupkis.

Davis played just one snap on Sunday against the Steelers, raising the question of why the Broncos even bother to activate him on game days if they’re not going to use him. Davis has reportedly struggled to pick up the offense, and the Broncos appeared to lose faith in him after he dropped some passes. Davis hasn’t had a pass thrown his way in the last three games.

Davis has a history of playing well in the postseason: He has four 100-yard receiving games in the playoffs in his career, and his seven postseason touchdowns are the second-most for a tight end in NFL history, behind only Rob Gronkowski’s eight.

But Davis can’t play well if he isn’t on the field. And right now, it looks like the Broncos don’t think Davis is good enough to get on the field. He’s been a complete non-factor.

  1. He was actually doing well until he suffered a concussion. Since then, he dropped two key passes in two straight games and hasn’t seen the field since.

  2. How we (the niners) go from having Davis as a postseason hero to us winning a trade of him that netted us a 6th round pick is baffling.

  3. Virgil greens in much better tight end anyways he just doesn’t get the opportunities. but when he has gotten them he takes full advantage of them he has only dropped one ball

  4. Gotta feel bad for any receiver with little Pey Pey throwing to him. Funny how Pey Pey’s numbers dropped big time when they started testing for HGH. Look it up, kids.

  5. When the 49ers traded Davis, the ‘knowledgeable’ (lol, lol, lol) 49er fans just ripped Baalke like Davis was still a Pro-Bowl TE only being held back by Darth Baalke.

Fact is ever since his contract hold-out failed in 2014 I think it was, he’s been playing half-hearted. Even McDonald, widely considered a bust by many 49er fans, out played Davis at TE this year. And that’s despite McDonald being the 3rd string TE at the beginning of season behind Davis & Celek.

Peyton’s arm has kind of been a non-factor as well.

Lol. Oh it’s been a factor, just not of the positive variety.

  7. Obviously the Broncos didn’t do their homework on Davis. I was watching some 49ers tape trying to figure out what was going on with Kaepernick. Obviously, the Broncos didn’t see those tapes. Mike Singletary knows what I’m talking about.

  8. BroncosCheatedTheSalaryCap,

So you’re saying that because they started testing for HGH in October of 2014 and then suspiciously two months later Peyton’s steep and sudden decline started means he did it? I guess if you include the fact that he hasn’t denied that HGH was sent to his wife I have to agree. Funny everyone wants to overlook it because he’s their favorite player. Bunch of hypocrites if you ask me.

  9. He has really kept the Broncos from achieving their goals. And on to the AFC Championship game. How’s your team doing??? LMAO (Barb, bring the oxygen tank!!!)

  10. This is why you shouldn’t trade for big-name players in the middle of the season. They simply don’t know the offense as well as the other guys and therefore get less playing time

Maybe he should ask his QB for some HGH.

    ————————————————-

    They do that in Colorado???

  12. He was praised for his run blocking while in San Francisco. The problem with getting traded is players usually end up going somewhere they may have not wanted to go. His talent alone will get him another good contract with a team he chooses.

HE NEVER WAS THAT GREAT 1 OR 2 SEASONS TOPS. HE WAS DONE A COUPLE YEARS AGO!
    ————————————–

WHAT? SPEAK UP, HE CAN’T HEAR YOU AT HIS AGE.

  14. I haven’t seen Vernon Davis playing much at all since he alligator armed a pass in Pittsburgh several weeks ago. That was one of the worst attempts at catching a ball I have ever seen in my entire life.

  15. eh. he’s not a terrible 3rd TE to have. Like someone else pointed out, he did alright before the concussion.

Virgil Green almost got hurt last week after a big hit, so they need him for the depth. Just lucky that Green and Daniels have been pretty good and havent needed to test Davis’s ability in important situations

Doesn’t matter, Denver’s season ends on Sunday 🙂

    Go Tawmey!!!!!
    __________
The Pats are 2-6 in Denver with Brady at the helm. I’m not stating who’s going to win, but take it for what it’s worth.

  17. All it takes to be a pro athlete is to lift weights and eat right. Period.

All athletes who have been caught using PEDs are the only ones who have done it.

Getting tired of all the years of accusations against athletes. Just because people will cheat at jenga, doesnt mean they will cheat when there is millions at stake for them, and their families.

  18. Wasn’t he one of the players who sold “futures stock” in his contracts to gullible fans ?

  19. Maybe he should ask Julian Edelman how to recover from Kam Chancellor Syndrome? (hint: lots of extra work with your QB after practice ends and also lots of burgers.)

  20. It is a good thing the Niners traded Davis this season. It saved Chip Kelly the trouble of cutting this bum and being labeled a racist for parting ways with a pro bowl tightened.

  21. Go back to my original comment after he was traded…… I called it and it wasn’t difficult, know why?… I actually WATCH football! Vernon Davis straight up QUIT playing football after Kam Chancellor cleaned his clock. He’s done! D.O.N.E.

  22. Vernon Davis has contracted Alligator Arms. Any Bronco fan can tell you this. He, literally, will not stretch out for a ball across the middle.

Davis seems done. I wouldn’t be surprised if he retires at the end of the year.

  23. Lol, EVERYONE other than kickers are using HGH or other such drugs. They have to! Between the hits and the need for that edge, they all use to differing degrees. What’s surprising is how many people doubt this. Just like in cycling, it will all come out in due time.

Hindsight is 20/20 but it now seems that Elway should have traded for Joe Thomas instead of Vernon Davis.

I doubt that even the factory of sadness has sunk quite so low that they would give up Joe for what brought VD to Denver.

  26. Davis didn’t all of a sudden forget how to catch.

I think his problems are a result of trying to learn an offense which is more complex than what they ran in SF. I would bet that half the routes for Denvers TEs are option routes and he needs more reps to get in sync.

  27. Maybe he hasn’t done much in Denver, but he could have a very nice 47-yard TD in garbage time of the Super Bowl once Derek Anderson has come in to run the clock. 🙂

  28. Wow you people think the Patriots cheat on every play, you compare Amendola to Burfect.Looks like they really cheated in last yrs. SB what Brady threw 4 TD’S and over 300 yds. They changed the OT rules because Peyton didn’t have a shot to score. The Broncos run more pick plays than anybody. They hold Gronk on every play but he gets flagged for pushing off.Where’s the preferential treatment.Whiners cry when they can’t win.Denver looked real good 2 SB’S agowhen Seattle embarrassed them.Chandler Jones has a clean record but you call him a drug addict. What about Antonio Smith the child abuser,Manning on HGH,D.Wolfe suspended early in the yr.Aquib Talib gouging out player’s eyes.Your all a bunch of hypocrites.

  29. I admit to being a Packer fan who generally supports Ted Thompson. I repeatedly criticized him on not getting Davis for the Packers. I stand by the fact that the Packers tight end position is one of the worst in the league, for two years, and that is Thompson’s fault. I do admit that he was wise to pass on Davis. Packers at least need an Owen Daniels level TE for 2016.
