Chip Kelly says both 49ers quarterbacks made job an “attractive situation”

When Chip Kelly was hired as the 49ers head coach, there were plenty of people who shared the opinion that his arrival could be a good thing for quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s future with the team.

Kaepernick lost his starting job to Blaine Gabbert last year and then went on injured reserve due to a left shoulder injury that required surgery. Gabbert did a better job with the 49ers than he did as the Jaguars starter and Kelly had good things to say about both quarterbacks without delving into specifics about his plans at the position.

“Obviously, Kap is an extremely talented football player and you need to have a good quarterback to win,” Kelly said. “But I was also impressed in the film I watched in terms of how Blaine played this year, also. I think statistics bear out that you probably need two good quarterbacks in this league with the injury rate quarterbacks have. I think both of those players make this an attractive situation.”

Kaepernick had right thumb and knee surgeries as well after the end of the season, which could complicate the decision the team has to make by April 1 about keeping Kaepernick. His $11.9 million salary becomes guaranteed on that date and the team won’t start any offseason work with players until a few days later.

Kelly said that they’ll get feedback from the team’s training staff about Kaepernick’s rehab and that there will be “decisions made on everybody” as he and his still incomplete coaching staff evaluate the roster in the coming weeks. Wednesday’s comments provide reason to believe that the evaluation will end with Kaepernick bidding to reclaim the starting job.

  1. That and the opportunity to beat the crybaby Seahawks like a drum twice a year.

  2. Kaepernick and attractive should not be used in the same sentence. I mean, just look at that pic.

  3. Kelly’s right about teams needing two good quarterbacks, at least. Half the teams in the league were starting second and third stringers by the end of the season.

  4. That and it being the only NFL head coaching gig you had any chance of landing this year.

  5. Kaep and Gabbert are both pretty mobile and fit Kelly offense well. I think Kaep has more upside because he doesn’t turn it over. Outside of the Cardinals game with 4 picks he only threw 1 in 7 games.

  6. “I think statistics bear out that you probably need two good quarterbacks in this league with the injury rate quarterbacks have.”

Especially in your offense where you let the D end come free to hit your QB regardless if he has the ball or not. No QB in the last 3 years under Chip has played 16 games. His offense is very dangerous to their health. Good luck.

  7. Have fun running the same 5 plays, from 5 formations for a 3 and out in under 30 seconds.

A good coach wins big games and can bend his scheme to fit the needs and glaring weaknesses of inferior talent (that he hand-picked, mind you).

Chip is not a good coach. I repeat….NOT.

If you don’t believe me, just watch the Eagles in games 17-32 of Chip’s tenure….and particularly game 2 of the 2015 season…now that’s some genius coaching right there.

    Chip sucks. Have fun.

  8. Kaep’s off-the-field lifestyle doesn’t seem like something Kelly would welcome if he has a say. There are questions as well about Kaep’s ability to read the field and how necessary that will be in Chip 2.0.

If Kelly likes Robert Griffin, they probably pass on Kaep and use some of that money to fend off competing bids (if any) for Griffin in free agency.

  9. The 49ers should trade with the Browns for Manziel and use him as a backup. They can probably get him for a ham sandwich. If Manziel ever gets his head on straight, he could be a good fit for Kelly’s offense.

  10. Reports are it was Shanahan’s job to lose except he didn’t think he could win with Kaepernick.

Chip just got paid because he’s the only coach who said he could salvage Kaep. Good luck.

  11. Manziel is too much of a head case. Not worth it and definitely not someone I think Chip would want on his team. Examples McCoy and Jackson.

Trade either Kaepernick or Gabbert. (Gabbert has more value as younger and contract – paid like a backup but has starting potential)

Draft the QB from Oregon. He’s very similar to Russell Wilson. Google Vernon Adams. Have him backup this year and starter next if Kaepernick doesn’t quite “pickup the Kelly offense” well.

  12. Kap’s stats the first 8 games were almost identical to Gabbert’s in the last 8 games. The difference is that this was the worst season of Kap’s career, but it was the best season of Gabbert’s career.

Gabbert proved himself to be a serviceable backup, but Kap’s ceiling is just so much higher.

So, the 4-12 9er’s fans are saying that the 9er’s haven’t been able to “beat” Seattle for years because CK wasn’t coaching them?

Wishful thinking is all 9er’s fans have in their near future. But you’ve got a new Stadium to put up losses in, so you’ve got that going for you.

  14. That look at Kaepernick’s face is like, “I lost my job to Blaine Gabbert!?” Yes sir, yes you did! That’s how bad you suck! 🙂

  15. Shehawk fans pumping there chest out as if to think there still going to be great lol You don’t realize that your window is slowly closing just wait till Kam and Bennent hold out this offseason lol

  16. This was the perfect thing to say if you’re planning to draft a QB in the first round. You don’t get any advantage by tipping your hand. That is the reason this press conference was delayed a week. The 49ers had some hidden messages, and they needed to organize the speech. Plus Chip needed time to study film on the team. Baalke is really good at stuff like this. He’s very smart about collecting extra draft picks too. It’s just his overall talent evaluating, particularly the character evaluation, that is poor. Maybe they’ll lean more on Tom Gamble or someone else for the actual grading and choosing the players. So I would say that the 49ers are going to draft a QB in the first round, but I can’t say for certain that they’ll pick the right one. Kelly knows the importance of having more than one good QB on the team, so it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re going to unload the guys they already have. At least not until Kelly gets his hands on them and sees what he’s got.

    You will try.

    And fail.
