LeSean McCoy: Kelly will “put the stats up offensively” with 49ers

LeSean McCoy hasn’t been shy about sharing his personal feelings about Chip Kelly since Kelly traded the running back to the Bills last year and little of what he’s had to say has been positive.

During an appearance on NFL Network this week, McCoy compared his experience with Bills coach Rex Ryan favorably to his time with Kelly on the Eagles. He said Ryan “let the leaders, veterans lead” the team while Kelly “dictates how everything is supposed to go” and, as a result, there “aren’t really a lot of leaders on the team.”

McCoy doesn’t think that will be a bad thing for the 49ers, though. For all of his issues with Kelly, McCoy still thinks the coach has good ideas about how to run an offense and that 49ers players will thrive if they accept what Kelly’s selling.

“Every situation is different. The one thing I will say about Chip is that he wants to win,” McCoy said. “He’s very, very intelligent. The offense, they’ll find ways to get the big numbers, they’ll find ways to put the stats up offensively. With him coming in there, no matter how good of a player or low player you are, if you just automatically believe him — no matter if it sounds crazy, you’re like ‘what is he talking about’ — if you just automatically believe and buy in, I think you’ll be fine.”

McCoy and several other Eagles players didn’t seem to go that route when Kelly was in Philadelphia and Kelly’s ability to get things to go the other way will go a long way toward determining if things go better for him in Santa Clara.

  1. So, does this mean that he didn’t live up to the standard that a pro should be held to and didn’t automatically buy in when Kelly was hired to coach the Eagles?

  2. “McCoy compared his experience with Bills coach Rex Ryan favorably to his time with Kelly on the Eagles.”

Wrecks lets the inmates run the asylum and Kelly doesn’t.

What a loser this guy is.

  3. Lesean, just be respectful and move on from even thinking about Kelly. I know you were an Eagles fan growing so getting traded was unimaginable and totally sucked but just look at how things turned out for you. Pretty darn well in my opinion. You got to spearhead the best rushing attack in the NFL and the Bills are on the upswing with a lot of promise. Nothing is for certain but the Bills have a reasonable shot at the playoffs next year.

The Eagles meanwhile have imploded and the future outlook is not looking good. Take what you can get and move on.

  4. non-story. an overrated RB commenting on an overrated coach.

neither has won anything. and “leader” McCoy certainly “led” the bills to the post-season this year. oh that’s right…McCoy missed many gms due to injury.

  5. I’d like to see this guy on the Pats. He’d probably whine about Belichick’s coaching style and say he prefers that clown Rex Ryan’s style.

  6. Shady might be right about Kelly wanting to control everything but then in his comparison with Wrecks, he goes to the absolute opposite of the spectrum. What Shady obviously doesn’t understand is that his choice of comparison is exactly why neither of those two coaches will ever take their teams to the SB. Either coach delivers the same result…..no real leadership by their players.

  8. Assuming Shady knows something my concern is this….If you score 30 points and give up 31 you still lose. Offense is only a part of the equation….

  9. Has Shady looked at the Offensive roster of Santa Clara? Their stats will be up alright. Interceptions, 3rd down inefficiency, 3 and outs, and Loses

  10. Let’s see….

    They need a QB
    They need WR’s
    They need TE’s
    They need OL
Their RB doesn’t match Kelly’s previous style.

So, that may be the case, but they need a lot more talent pretty much everywhere on offense and Kelly would need to change his offense.

Like it or not, Hyde is much closer to what he had with Murray then what Kelly had with McCoy.

Plus there is no Maclin or Jackson.

They have Smith and an aging Boldin. They have Kaep and Gabbert.

They have problems, and how can Kelly communicate to Baalke what he wants… when Kelly didn’t even do that for himself when he signed Murray?

Perhaps eventually McCoy is right… but a ton of personnel changes have to be made (and they have to hit on those). Kelly also needs to swallow his pride and start adjusting to his players strengths.

  11. Kelly doesn’t have the players to score points. Kelly better find a quarterback who can throw the ball. Otherwise he won’t fare any better than the last guy.

  12. Ok Philly fans, you wanted Shady to be polite, make nice and move on? This is him doing it. Please do the same.

SF fans, just some advice: temper your expectations. Shady is being absolutely correct that Chip will likely help put up a lot of points. He’s generally very good at scheming, and when his offense is clicking there is nothing like it.

When it’s not clicking, you are looking at 90 second 3 and outs, with your defense ground down to dust by the first half of the season is over. Chip is unwilling or unable to go a traditional, Pro style offense, even when it better fits the situation and/or personnel.

    Good luck.

  13. I think Kelly should try to bring McCoy to the 49ers. I think their styles are perfect for each other and I honestly think the 49ers would be better with McCoy as their bell cow. Shady running it around the edges with Kaepernick using his legs up the middle on play action might actually work.

But, what do I know… Chip Kelly will probably try to get cute and end up posting another 5 win season for the 49ers.

Shady is in the 2nd of a 5 year deal with the Bills, and they have a massive cap hit if they cut him, though why they would even consider it would mystify me.

Bills would consider trading him because they have 2 younger, less expensive RBs on the roster. They wouldn’t give him away like Philly did.

  16. Now that Chip isn’t on the Dream Team is he still the greatest coach in the world and the guy that’s going to change everything in the NFL?

  17. Realizing how ignorant he’s been? I don’t recall shady saying Kelly can’t coach. He said he’s not good with player personnel(he isn’t), he’s not approachable and he’s controlling (he is), and that he shouldn’t have gotten rid of the players he did (he shouldn’t have). I think it’s funny how players are supposed to shut up and take whatever punches coaches throw at them but when they speak up it’s, “shut up and know your role”

  18. It’s amazing how many people don’t read an article. They just see Chip and McCoy in the same headline and rush to make their jokes or super insightful “grow up” advice, disregarding the fact McCoy is actually being complimentary towards Kelly. Amazing how stupid people are.

I think the point is he can’t stop bringing up Chip Kelly regardless of what it’s about.
