49ers hire another defensive assistant, but no coordinator

Chip Kelly continues to fill in his 49ers defensive staff without having a defensive coordinator to run it.

According to Alex Marvez of FOX Sports, the 49ers have hired former Browns secondary coach Jeff Hafley for the same job there.

They’ve also hired former Buccaneers linebacker Hardy Nickerson to coach the position he played, but haven’t identified a coordinator yet, which makes it clear Kelly has a template he’s looking for if not a specific guy.

No names have emerged since he was turned down by Texans linebackers coach Mike Vrabel, who came highly recommended from Kelly’s close friend Bill Belichick.

  1. This is so backassed, hiring assistants with no DC.

I almost feel bad for the Claries, almost.

  2. I realize they want to get their staff in place but both these hires were currently unemployed and this late in the game likely weren’t going anywhere. Wouldn’t it make more sense to secure the DC and then get his input on his staff?

You don’t need to worry about our team. You probably need to worry about your 7-9 team, and the fact they are about to move out of Oakland.

  4. this is exactly how it went down in Philly….Kelly was hired on Jan. 16, 2013 and Bill Davis wasn’t hired until Feb. 7th, after Chip had already put other coaches in place.

It was so clear that Bill wasn’t the first choice.

  5. So, the poor sap who gets the defensive coordinator position gets no say on who is on his staff. He’s just going to be a lackey to Kelly.

    Damn you, Baalke and York!!!

  6. The Dallas Cowpies have a worse record than the 49ers in 2015. They will be drafting 4th vs. 7th for the Niners. How come nobody is persecuting the owner and GM the way they are persecuting the Niners’ front office and owners’ son?
