Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor headed to the Pro Bowl

AP

With the rash of players bailing on the Pro Bowl for competitive or “injury” reasons, the reach is expanding for guys who had functional seasons or seem interested in going to the game.

And at quarterback, we’re getting down to guys who had good seasons, if not great ones.

The Bills announced that quarterback Tyrod Taylor and center Eric Wood were going to Hawaii, replacing Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and center Ryan Kalil.

Aaron Rodgers and Ben Roethlisberger have already begged out of the all-star game this weekend, replaced by Derek Carr and Eli Manning.

Tom Brady, Carson Palmer and Russell Wilson were the three original picks who haven’t been replaced yet.

Taylor didn’t even have a starting job when camp opened, but won the job amid dubious competition and then played efficiently. He only threw six interceptions all year, and was seventh in the league in passer rating.

  1. After taking a beating yesterday (hit 20 times) and suffering a high ankle sprain the week before, I doubt Brady will go either. Palmer was also beaten up last night, so a couple of good, or even average, quarterbacks will play in the meaningless game instead.

  2. Congrats to Tyrod and Bills fans everywhere. That kid is no doubt one of the biggest surprises of the 2015 season. I don’t say this lightly–he definitely deserves to go to the Pro Bowl much more than my man Marcus Mariota, Jameis Winston or many of the proven vets who played well this year. … Yep … I do believe you’ve found your franchise QB.

  3. Tyrod. Getting ready to make big things happen next year. This is the 1st time we had a decent quarterback and a top-tier WR go-back to back years since Doug Flutie and Eric Moulds.

  4. I love the Bills and Tyrod, and he was a nice surprise, but he still has big improvements to make before he’s a franchise QB and a legit pro bowler.

  5. They have made the Pro Bowl even more unwatchable with this new team format.

At least with AFC vs. NFC I can pick a side to root for. I can pick based on the conference my team is in or for some other reason.

When I’m in a fantasy league I have a connection to my team and/or the other people in the league. I have no connection with Michael Irvin, Jerry Rice or anyone else “drafting” these teams.

Seriously, why don’t they have a Flag Football game with three QBs on each team? 1 Legend, the best AFC/NFC QB and 1 of the top prospects from the upcoming draft?

That would at least get people a little curious about tuning in and players wouldn’t risk injury so they might actually show up.

  6. All of the comments make no sense, Taylor being the 7th ranked quarterback out played 25 other quarterbacks.

Congrats to your season and recognition from people who know football

    Cam Newton….

    296 of 495 (59.8%) for 3,837 yards (7.75 ypa) and 35 TDs and 10 INTs
132 carries for 636 yards (4.8 ypc) and 10 TDs and 4 Fumbles
    239 Passing yards per game
    39 Rushing yards per game
    QB Rating of 99.4
    QBR Rating of 66.1

    Tyrod Taylor…

    242 for 380 (63.7%) for 3,035 yards (7.99 ypa) and 20 TDs and 6 INTs
104 carries for 568 yards (5.5 ypc) and 4 TDs and 4 Fumbles
    217 Passing yards per game
    41 Rushing yards per game
    QB Rating of 99.4
    QBR Rating of 67.8

  8. Remember 1992 when Kelly got a concussion in the blow out Super Bowl loss to the Redskins and stayed in the game?

Well, he started in the Pro Bowl the next week.

    Times have changed.

  9. I am not knocking Tyrod, he had a great year but the Pro Bowl is stupid. It does not meaning like sports other All Star games so they need to find a new way instead naming half the league pro bowlers.

  10. Congratulations Mr. Taylor. Here’s hoping you have a great game and that Rex gets out of your way, so they can realize your skills.

Numbers don’t lie. When I said during the Bills QB competition that if he gets on the field, they will not get him off, I was right. I also said he is a poor man’s Russell Wilson (skill-wise). The only reason is that, he has not been able to showcase his abilities.

We now have a small sample. As it stands, he is poised to replace Brady as the standard in the AFCE. Just a matter of time and Rex getting out of his way. Even this year, Rex’s defense was the real issue.

    Cam Newton….

    Going to the Super Bowl
    NFL MVP

    Tyrod Taylor…

Going to the Pro Bowl as an alternate

  12. Just goes to show how the pro bowl is a joke. Weren’t there numerous games where this guy threw the ball like 8 times? This isn’t even an honor anymore and should not even be looked at when judging a player’s career!

  13. What a wasted game. Get some college all stars and let them play against the crap the NFL is putting out.

  14. So when is this 2nd team pro bowl game taking place. All 6 qbs aren’t showing up? Something needs to change, nobody cares or is watching this garbage. We see it every year on here bring back the skills competition and get rid of the game. Give the guys large prizes for winning the skills games. It would be fun to watch and everyone would want to be part of it. Even the Superbowl guys if you held it a week after the season ended. Who can throw the farthest, who’s the most accurate, who’s the fastest, strongest, quickest, best hands, etc.

  15. This selection has befuddled Buffalo fans and made them delusional. I actually wish the Bills well … but please, Tyrod is a middle-of-the-road talent. That whiff in the air … it’s coffee … wake up and smell it.

by middle of the road talent, you mean top ten qb ranking. not bad for a guy who wasnt even getting first team reps this entire summer.
I have no clue if he will ever be better than he was this year, but he def earned a ton of respect this year.

Im sure he had a better season than you did as well.

  17. He doesn’t miss 2 games, and isnt hobbled for another pair, and he makes it without being an alternate. He doesn’t, and won’t be a superstar, but is incredibly efficient keeping the TO to a minimum. 3 interceptions of his came on the final drive while trailing by a single score, one was a tipped ball. Tyrod Taylor was the only reason this Bills team didn’t finish 6-10, or worse. Id take him in the half of QB’s.

Agreed. I think of him as more a poor man’s Michael Vick, but Russel Wilson is also comparable. Wilson is more stout which contributes to his durability, but I think Taylor will prove to be more elusive over time. I would like to see Taylor bulk up a little in the off-season. He’s a great runner but he’s too small so he’s always just begging to get crushed by an OLB.

I certainly hope this development continues as well. Brady was sharp as ever this year, but he will begin to decline over the next few years, just like everyone else. Whether Pats fans want to admit it or not, his days are numbered.

His dominance is also closely tied to Mr. Gronkowski. Not saying Brady isn’t great all on his own, he’s an exceptional player, but having another exceptional player to throw the ball too helps quite a bit. Watching that game yesterday… man, Gronk is a freakin monster. He’s such a physical specimen that he simply has no peers. Brady and Gronk ARE the Patriots. Without their presence on the field to dictate the defense, the Pats offense is a bunch of no-names. It will be fascinating to see how Belichick handles Brady’s inevitable decline. Just hoping they don’t fall face first into another HOF QB though, GB Packers style.

Tannehill is “meh,” Fitzpatrick is a fill-in (who’s days are also limited), and Taylor has no competition on the Bills roster. The door is certainly open for him to take the AFC East crown for at least a couple of years.

Thanks for the breakdown. You left out the fact however that one is playing for a super bowl and the other is playing for a coach who’s been promising super bowls…

  20. Taylor?

Kirk Cousins, Ryan Tannehill, Matthew Stafford, Blake Bortles, Jameis Winston, and Ryan Fitzpatrick all had better seasons.

  21. How about this: Trash the Pro Bowl and turn the whole affair into multiple skills competitions.

The idea of drafting players for the game turned out exactly like Madden’s Ultimate Team mode. Fun for like six or seven seconds.

For such a popular league and sport, their think tank is the most uninspiring group of people imaginable.

    By what measure?

Certainly not by accuracy, yards per attempt or QB rating.

I’ll grant that the Taylor doesn’t have huge yardage numbers, because when you have the best run game in the NFL you don’t need to go with the Patriot approach of “swap out the run game with the short pass”.

  23. Tyrod missed a couple games and was not at 100% when he got back. Not making excuses, just saying his season numbers would look a bit more impressive with all 16 games. He probably would have been near 700 yards rushing without a brace on his knee. By the way he had the exact same QBR as Newton did in the regular season (99.4). They were tied for 7th best QBR. A better rating than Rodgers, Roeth, Eli, Stafford, Rivers, etc.

I will say Cousins probably deserved it every bit as much though, but not Stafford, or Tannehill, or (Bortles and Fitz who were 23rd and 24th in QBR). So if you don’t think Tyrod is any good, go ahead and look at QBRs for all players and you may be a bit surprised.

  24. One of Bills fans said Taylor is the best QB buffalo has had since Doug Flutie ….wow that’s not much to hang your hat on….
Flutie had ZERO wins in the playoffs
He did manage to get them there.. But again ZERO wins

  25. Pro Bowl is a joke. Tyrod Taylor’s selection is nothing more than a “Diversity” move.

Moving the game before the Superbowl and the fantasy format of it has made the whole thing completely laughable. The first one I attended during the early 80’s the winners received 10k and the losers 5k. And they actually competed – Conference of the losing SB team wanted revenge and the hits were real. It was awesome to see legends such as Montana, Marino, Kelly etc. and these players showed up.

Such a pity what this joke of a game has become, I never bother to go anymore. Haven’t even watched it on TV for the last two years. It’s definitely taken two steps backwards.

  26. Not sure why comment in support of Taylor are not published while mostly negative undertones get put on.

Taylor deserves a better representation of his abilities and hard work

  27. Blake Bortles tied for second in the NFL with 35 touchdowns. Would be in the PB if he didn’t play for Jacksonville. But Taylor had a good year.

  28. Rutledge- yes and no QB since Flutie has made the playoffs. Flutie also didn’t start the last time they made it.

Flutie is no HOF but he was decent. The statement isn’t to say how Flutie was good, it was to say how utterly pathetic that they have been since.
