Report: Former Browns DC Jim O’Neil interviews with 49ers

The 49ers didn’t land Mike Vrabel as their defensive coordinator and Eric Mangini won’t be back with the team, which means the search still goes on for a defensive leader on Chip Kelly’s coaching staff.

That search reportedly includes former Browns defensive coordinator Jim O’Neil. Jason Cole of Bleacher Report reported over the weekend that the 49ers have interest in O’Neil and Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports O’Neil interviewed for the job recently.

O’Neil spent the last two years as Mike Pettine’s defensive coordinator in Cleveland and coached with Pettine, whose father coached O’Neil in high school, with both the Jets and Bills before making the move to the Browns.

Jason Tarver, who coached the 49ers linebackers last year and was the Raiders defensive coordinator from 2012 to 2014, and Ravens inside linebackers coach Don Martindale have also been mentioned as candidates for the coordinator position.

  1. Chip would be smart to name Don Martindale D-Coordinator, Jason Tarver OLB Coach and stay away from Jim O’Neill. The Browns definitely regressed with Pettine focusing more on the offense this year.

  2. Did any DC do less with more in the past two years? The Browns had the league’s highest-paid defense with Haden, Gipson, Whitner, Kruger, Bryant, and (in O’Neill’s first year) Rubin and Sheard and Taylor. He got nothing out of them. Rubin and Sheard went on to play well for other teams. Players underperform for this guy. Blame it on him, blame it on them; whatever. Why would hire him?

  3. Meanwhile, Chip has been hiring defensive assistants who any self-respecting DC would have wanted some input on. Even in college a coordinator will frequently get at least some say on who is on his staff. Chip just sets himself up to fail.

And interesting that essentially nobody from Philly is joining him with the Niners. Either he totally lost confidence in the entire staff he assembled there or nobody wants to work for him any longer.

  4. Pretty obvious people don’t do any homework including Browns fans. Not saying he’s great, but considering their stellar draft picks that he literally had no choice in, he was in a no win situation as was Pettine. That organization is a joke. Point is, you can’t judge any coach from there because the organization is atrocious and doesn’t do anything to help coaches. Time will tell.

  5. This guy has absolutely no business being a DEF Co on any team, at any level. The fact that the 49rs Front Office would even CONSIDER interviewing them s clown tells me they are clueless. Good luck 49er fan. He’s a punk who knows everything & nothing.

  6. I don’t know. But before I dump on a coach, I like to look at the mess he’s coaching.

And when I look at that mess, it’s pretty bad. Unachievers. Over-the hill players. And draft-failure after draft-failure failing to restock the Browns who have been getting worse defensively every year since peaking in 2011.

I think the last time they drafted a high-quality defender was Joe Haden back in 2010. And since then, they’ve picked a small number of average-at-best guys and a lot of bad ones.

Actually, the Eagles Assistant Coaches were still under contract and the team prevented the good ones, such as Fipp, Undlin, Pelle and Stoutland from leaving. Look for some of them to part ways with the Eagles after they finish last in the Division (and probably the NFL) under Pederson.

  8. It’s funny reading how many Browns fans are berating this guy. Seems to me they automatically assume everyone associated with their team is garbage. Here are some numbers for perspective:

“In his first season as defensive coordinator, O’Neil’s unit made significant increases in nearly every major defensive statistic, including red zone defense (29th in 2013 to 5th in 2014), third down defense (31st to 11th), points per game (23rd to ninth) and quarterback rating (16th to first). The team led the NFL in opponent completion percentage (57.1), opponent passer rating (74.1) and passes defensed (99). The Browns finished second in the league with 21 interceptions, the team’s highest total since 2008, while also finishing tied for fourth in takeaways (29). Cleveland’s defense also finished in the top-10 in the league in pass defense (fifth with 6.44 yards per attempt) and total defense (ninth with an average of 5.24 yards per play).” Not to mention the Browns had the second lowest time of possession in the league in that time.

  9. “Actually, the Eagles Assistant Coaches were still under contract and the team prevented the good ones”

I confess to not being an expert on the Eagles assistants, so how bad were the bad ones he COULD have brought with him? Because this staff he’s assembling in San Fran is looking pretty awful. The majority of guys he’s hiring are out of football they’re so bad.

  10. I don’t if the guy is going to succeed or not with the 49ers, but just like with everything else it’s all about the system you run. Maybe this guy is good at the system chip wants in place. Bottom line is just because you fail in one place, doesn’t necessarily mean your definitely going to fail in another. Everything I’ve been reading about chip Kelly is telling me the guy knows how to coach, so I’m going to be optimistic & trust he knows what he’s doing.

  11. It’s sad when 9ers fans have to convince themselves that a failed defensive coordinator is somehow good. O’neil was on his way out in Cleveland no matter who was head coach and Mike Pettine said as much. Why you might ask? Browns defense was run by Pettine in 2014 resulting in most of the secondary making the pro bowl and the team holding a piece of first place for most of that season. Pettine concentrated on the offensive side of the football in 2015 letting O’neil have full reign of the defense and the defense dropped to dead last or close to it under his watch despite a lot of talent on that side in most categories.

He is NOT an upgrade over Mangini and if anything they should be trying to talk Pettine into joining the staff. The fact that Chip Kelley fired Mangini without having anyone to take over the job in itself is ridiculous and is one of the things that got him fired from Philly in the first place when he did that with players.

I love how these Philly clowns rock up and tell us how to do things for success. They run the guy who took their franchise from 4-12 to 10-6 for 2 years running out of town, then come here to try to continue to rubbish him? Makes no sense to me. Hang on…….its Philly – makes perfect sense then.

If you’re a 49ers fan this is the ultimate pot calling the kettle black or have you forgotten the reason the team is on it’s second coach in two years is because they ran the one that took them to the Superbowl out of town.

  14. What happened to the 49ers “proud franchise” of the not-so-distant past? Trent Baalke is enthralled with the Cleveland Browns former coaches for some deep dark reason none of us know about, and that makes no sense. These hires are self sabotaging of the 49ers season by Baalke, unless of course these are the only coaches (in this case, bad DC from losing Browns) who will agree to work for the 9ers. Has O’Neill ever won anything, anywhere? In either case, this is just sad and puzzling, and such a downer after Vrabel refused! Why not just wait for the SB to be over and see if they could lure one of those defensive coaches? O’Neill would still be there later if all else failed, there’s no doubt.

  15. I remember when some Belichek guy failed as a HC in Cleveland, and walked out on the team as the HC of the NYJ, but he seemed to do okay in New England.
