The Vikings hired Pat Shurmur to be their tight ends coach in a move that came after speculation that Shurmur would come onboard with a different title due to his past experience as both a head coach and offensive coordinator.
Head coach Mike Zimmer said that the team isn’t really “into titles” and that they brought Shurmur to the team to be a position coach first and foremost. With that said, Zimmer also likes that Shurmur has experience in different offensive systems than the one that offensive coordinator Norv Turner runs so they can provide different views about what the unit should be doing.
“He’s had experience. He’s been with a lot of different offenses, been a head coach, been an offensive coordinator. He’s coached the tight ends before,” Zimmer said, via Scout.com. “He’s had some experience with the Philadelphia offense, the West Coast offense. I think it’s just good to get more guys in that have input.”
Zimmer doesn’t expect Shurmur’s input to make radical changes to the offense -- “we’re not going to have two-minute possessions” -- but added that there are things the team likes about other schemes that they’d like to implement as they build their playbook for next season.
