NFL announces Super Bowl “Golden Team”

AP

The Broncos and Panthers will be playing Super Bowl 50 a week from Sunday and the NFL has been playing up the golden anniversary of the big game all season.

That continued Thursday with the announcement of the “Super Bowl 50 Golden Team,” which was voted on by the Pro Football Hall of Fame selectors.

“The Super Bowl 50 Golden Team is an amazing list of incredible individuals,” Pro Football Hall of Fame executive vice president Joe Horrigan said in a release. “Each name conjures up memories of some of the sport’s greatest games showcased on its biggest platform, the Super Bowl stage. Unforgettable individual performances like Lynn Swann’s acrobatic catches in Super Bowl X or Joe Montana’s come-from-behind game winning drive in Super Bowl XXIII are forever etched in the collective memories of football fans and celebrated as some of the most inspiring moments in the history of the National Football League.”

The entire team appears below. Two spots that seem certain to generate some debate are quarterback and coach, where the voters went with Joe Montana and Chuck Noll respectively. The Patriots duo of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are sure to have quite a few people in their corner and Terry Bradshaw fans will likely have a bone to pick as well when it comes to Super Bowl exploits at those two positions.

Quarterback – Joe Montana, 49ers

Running back – Franco Harris, Steelers; Emmitt Smith, Cowboys

Wide receiver – Jerry Rice, 49ers/Raiders; Lynn Swann, Steelers

Tight end – Jay Novacek, Cowboys

Tackle – Art Shell, Raiders; Forrest Gregg, Packers

Guard – Larry Allen, Cowboys; Gene Upshaw, Raiders

Center – Mike Webster, Steelers

Defensive end – Charles Haley, Cowboys/49ers; Reggie White, Packers

Interior defensive lineman – Joe Greene, Steelers; Randy White, Cowboys

Outside linebacker – Lawrence Taylor, Giants; Jack Ham, Steelers

Inside linebacker – Jack Lambert, Steelers; Ray Lewis, Ravens

Cornerback – Mel Blount, Steelers; Deion Sanders, Cowboys/49ers

Safety – Ronnie Lott, 49ers; Jake Scott, Dolphins

Kicker – Adam Vinatieri, Colts/Patriots (Vinatieri was the only unanimous selection)

Punter – Ray Guy, Raiders

Kick returner – Desmond Howard, Packers

Coach – Chuck Noll, Steelers

  1. Seems like one team is represented in much higher numbers than any other. Maybe this should have been the Super Bowl (Black and) Golden Team.

  2. Bradshaw over Montana. There is no question.

Montana was “marketed” meaning that the media generated a perception of him that is too generous. he was good, but he wasn’t THAT good.

Bradshaw did it the old fashioned way, he earned it the hard way.

  3. Amazing, you leave off 3 men that were arguably the best of all time Gino Marchetti, BALTIMORE COLTS, Jonathan Ogden, Ravens and the prototype without which none of the modern quarterbacks would have had success, number 19, Johnny Unitas, Baltimore Colts.

  4. Montana and the OG TB12 played when you were still allowed to hit QBs and receivers. If it happens, it’s some kind of petty to moan about Montana being picked over Brady.

  5. Brady demonstrated his true self against a decent Denver defense. He couldn’t complete a pass because he was cringing before he’d get hit.

  6. How is Reggie White on this over Justin Tuck? If it’s about how they played in the Super Bowl and not their career then that’s a joke.

How does the GOAT not make the team?

    Montana did make the team.

I’m fine with Brady and Belichick not being there as it should be filled with retired players.

Agreed and it is not a surprise that the HOF voters voted almost entirely for players who are already in the HOF. I think there are only 5 on that list who are not already in the HOF, and Ray Lewis is a lock to get in, and Vinatieri is a reasonably good bet to get in one day.

  9. It’s hard to leave Belichick and Brady off a list like this. I wouldn’t have chosen Franco either. Riggens, Csonka, or Marcus Allen would have been my pick but it is hard to argue with Emmitt.

  10. Message for ibelievebrady: yes, Jay Novacek is indeed deserving. Novacek put up 17 catches, 148 yards, and 2 TDs in his SB appearances.

Bavaro posted 9 catches for 101 yards and 1 TD, basically matching the yards and falling short on catches and TDs per game. Gronkowski put up 8 for 94 and 1 TD.

Given the superior blocking of the latter two, I wouldn’t have shed a tear had either been picked over Novacek. But he was a bit more productive as a receiver, and did it over three SB wins. So he’s at least just as deserving as they are, if not more so. Period, end of story.

And don’t get your panties in a twist about Bavaro. I know NY fans love him as if he were on the ’94 Rangers, and he was indeed a really good lunch pail player, but hardly anything close to greatness. He certainly wasn’t better than Novacek in his overall career either.

  11. Guys with multiple teams listed: NOT Reggie White. He played in Philly for 8 years (124 sacks) and in Green Bay for 6 years (68.5) sacks.

  12. Profootballtalk why would you think their is a debate in regards to Belicheck and Brady? If you weren’t a Patriots Fan you would think that list is right!

This comment is titled “revisionist history”

They were not allowed to hit WR.
they still called PI and holding.

This made up notion that ” back then you could hold and hit WR all they down the field” is a bit of a stretch.

PI and holding is not a new rule.

  14. The thing I took away from this list is that most are players from teams who built dynasty’s in an era without a salary cap. I really have no arguments with the list as they are all great players. That NE has been as dominant in this era of rebuilding teams year in and year out is not only amazing it might lead to jealousy by lesser organizations in the league. Congratulations to those named. You provided fans with great memories.

  15. “Noll over Belichick? Bruh.. I love my Steelers. But what Belichick have done in a salary cap era is just amazing.. and did not have a team with bunch of hall of famers.”

Belichick didn’t lose two Super Bowls. This about who is the best Super Bowl coach not best coach of all time.

  16. “Belichick didn’t lose two Super Bowls. This about who is the best Super Bowl coach not best coach of all time.”

I meant to say Noll didn’t lose two Super Bowls.

  17. How in the world is Joe Montana not a unanimous selection at QB?

    Montana – 11 TD (in 4 games) / ZERO INTs / 127.8 QBR
    Brady – 13 TD (in 6 games) / 4 INTs / 95.3 QBR
    Bradshaw – 9 TD (in 4 games/ 4 INTs /112.7 QBR

Montana won the MVP in 3 of his 4 SBs, and in the 4th, he engineered a 92 yard drive in the final minutes to win the Super Bowl. Montana NEVER threw an INT in the big game, won all of his appearances, and obliterates Brady in QB rating.

Brady has lost 2 Super Bowls, and he didn’t play all that well in either loss (82.5/91.5 rating).

An argument can be made for Brady as GOAT, but not in the Super Bowl.

  18. Brady demonstrated his true self against a decent Denver defense. He couldn’t complete a pass because he was cringing before he’d get hit.
    _________________________________________

Since when is being the #1 defense in the league only considered being “decent”? But hey, anything to knock Brady even though he was hit more times in one game than any QB has been hit in over 10 years. What constitutes a “good” defense?

    —-

Because not everyone is a crybaby.
Plenty of grownup, rational people can admit how great both are

  20. Chuck Noll was great, but Lombardi won 6 NFL titles. And the freaking trophy is named after him. Second would clearly be Belichick, who has coached in NINE Super Bowls, six as a head coach, with 4 head coaching wins.

  21. Ironically the argument here is Brady vs Montana. Not a Manning to be seen. You’d figure the beloved Peyton Manning would be a shoe in as he is continually shoved in our faces as the G.O.A.T. But, alas when it comes to winning the ultimate game, well, his statistics speak for themselves.

  22. OK, I know I’m a Bears homer, but no Mike Singletary? You know what, I can maybe let that one slide.

No Devin Hester? Sorry, I don’t think this one is even debatable.

  23. The Team of the Decade and a Half has been snubbed.

Oh yeah baby, this means war! Raze the NFL, burn em all to the ground in ’16! The Drive for Five begins anew! (after the SB L, natch) Houston here come the Pats!

  24. As a Pats fan… I think this makes sense. It is not about the greatest of all time. Its who rose to greatness in the big game and when you get down to it… it is about W-Ls.

QB: Montana (4-0) , Bradshaw (4-0), Brady (4-2)… The fact that Brady went to 6 is GOAT stuff and the fact he lost 2 makes Joe Montana the winner.

    Same for the coach slot.

  25. How often has Brady won a Super Bowl by more than one score? He’s one of the all time greats, but when you look at Super Bowl greats, they should be on teams that won often AND won convincingly.

  26. I think they should do a Not So Golden all Super Bowl Team… That would be a fun list…

Full of Vikings, Bills, Broncos, Patriots, Eagles, and starring Scott Norwood as the Kicker.

  27. I know one thing Joe Jacoby better make into the hall of fame this year or I’m thru with them. The hogs were one of the best offensive line to ever take the field. It’s a joke that he’s not in the hall already.

  28. this just shows how great the Steelers and Raiders were back in the day…but personally would have to take Marcus Allen over Franco Harris any day of the week

  29. Pats fan here…..there are a lot of deserving people, and that’s the basic problem with lists like this.

  30. I think all 27 players should be Pasties. And, their whole coaching staff. After all, they are shoo ins for SB50 because Brady is on his Revenge Tour. oh, wait…..

  31. One day fans may actually realize that comparing players of different eras is impossible to do.

Very few players that played 30 years ago would be fit, strong and big enough to play today.

There have been multiple rule changes that has changed the way games are played.

Massive changes the way teams are built then as compared to now.

That makes these kind of things impossible to do accurately. Admittedly SOME players like LT it may be possible to argue for but very fee in all eras.

Great players are great players lets just leave it at that!

  32. Larry Csonka – most yards per appearance.
Tied for 2nd for total rushing TDs.

    Should’ve been him instead Franco
    #ImmaculateSelection

  33. I think a lot of guys on this site never saw Joe Cool play in SB’s He didn’t just win ….he DOMINATED his opponents …every time
That pass to John Taylor in the final seconds against the Bengles was pure money…ice running thu his veins
    4-0… MVP three of them

    GOAT
P.S. Don’t forget what he did in that Cotton Bowl game

  34. Bradshaw over Montana. There is no question.

Montana was “marketed” meaning that the media generated a perception of him that is too generous. he was good, but he wasn’t THAT good.

Bradshaw did it the old fashioned way, he earned it the hard way.

It’s obvious you know absolutely nothing about football. Please educate yourself.

  35. QB rating in Super Bowls:

    Montana – 100/115/127/147
    Brady – 82/86/91/100/101/110

This list is about performance IN THE SUPER BOWL, not the regular season or division/conference championships. There is NO question which QB performed the best IN THE SUPER BOWL. If you think otherwise, then you lack simple reading comprehension.

  36. Lombardi obviously belongs in the conversation of best coaches of all time, but this is all about the history of the Super Bowl. Only two of Lombardi’s six championships were in the Super Bowl era. Chuck Noll won four.

I wouldn’t argue with those that think Belichick belongs on this list, but in this situation, the person whose entire body of work can be measured will be picked every time. Once Belichick and several current players retire, I’m sure that they would vote differently.

  37. Congratulations to Adam Vinatieri. He wasn’t perfect in Super Bowls but still deserved, IMO.

I’m fine with Belichick not being there as he is still active but Noll and no Lombardi? LOL. Probably the same Steeler homer voters that think Bettis is a HOFer.

    🙂

  38. When you factor in that Brady’s stats don’t even come close to Montana along with both him and the Patriots being guilty of cheating this shouldn’t come as a surprise. Even though you can never quantify how much the cheating helped, it doesn’t matter, he still doesn’t compare even with the help of cheating.

  39. I guess we’re doing Quantity over quality, because Terrell Davis had 2 of the best Super bowls in history. There seems to just be too much nostalgia on things like this. The Steelers were a great team, but some of these guys get too much credit.

  40. “Noll and no Lombardi? LOL. Probably the same Steeler homer voters that think Bettis is a HOFer.”

Wrong again. Lombardi never coached in a Super Bowl, he was the the Packers pre-merger.

  41. For everyone suggesting Belichick over Noll, the reason is simple: Noll is undefeated, Belichick has lost twice.

  42. Come to think of it is quite funny that the Steeler homer voters went with Noll over Lombardi. Is there a trophy named after Noll? 🙂

Other than the steroid trophy of course…

  43. Brady and BB are not done yet… It’s o.k.
If most of them are HOF who are we to argue?
Pssssst….. ESPN which is not so keen on Brady, named him number 1 player— not QB— player in SB history. The greatest!!! Fancy that?
Wonder if Goodell and ESPN have lovers’ spat.

  44. bradshaw over montana….TB called all his own plays, threw the winning TD pass in each game, twice mvp….better arm, stronger, tougher, etc…and actually played against real teams, the vikings purple people eaters and the famed cowboys flex defense….

montana, didnt call his own plays, dink n dunk, etc…not even close call for me. hell, jerry rice admitted to cheating, with stickum on his gloves….

  45. Fantastic list. Steelers deserve the most.

Montana is by far the GOAT.

I love seeing the cry babies in the NE whine so much. Even more so since Brady is still ducking the Denver pass rush in his sleep.

  46. Pats fans showing their football ignorance again. Vince Lombardi never coached in a Super Bowl, he coached the Packers pre-merger. The reason he wasn’t on the list is because this is a SUPER BOWL all-star team, not an all-NFL team.

  47. Not a Redskins fan, but someone needs to explain how there are NO Redskins on this list. I mean seriously do the PC Nitwits hate the name that much that they left off Riggns, Green, Doug Williams, Gibbs, and so on????

  48. Polamalu not being on this list is a disgrace. You could have slotted him in at S, CB, or LB. He was that good.

  49. And for those saying Brady and Belicheck should be on here – I would think the fact they lost 2 SBs, and are known, convicted cheats automatically excludes them.

You are correct, Pats fans suck for the most part. But a quick fact check reveals that Lombardi did in fact coach Green Bay in Super Bowls I and II, winning both.

    ———————–
Every NFL city has a member on the selection committee. Ron Borges is New England’s representative. Tee hee.

  52. Wrong again. Lombardi never coached in a Super Bowl, he was the the Packers pre-merger.
    —-
I always knew that all Patriot Haters know nothing about football and here is more evidence proving it. 🙂

  53. No hogs…What other offensive line contributed so much to 3 SB victories?
    Can’t take this seriously.

  54. Brady’s crying about this but he’s not the greatest Super Bowl QB. Montana and Bradshaw in winning their 4 Super Bowl titles didn’t do something that Brady has done….they NEVER LOST A SUPER BOWL!!!

  55. Brady’s crying about this but he’s not the greatest Super Bowl QB. Montana and Bradshaw in winning their 4 Super Bowl titles didn’t do something that Brady has done….they NEVER LOST A SUPER BOWL!!!

I don’t think GOAT QB Tom Brady is crying about this. 🙂 GOAT QB Tom Brady could care less about lists like this.

And it’s funny to hear the logic that 4-0 is better than 4-2. All that means is one guy went to 6 and the other guy only went to 4 Super Bowl games. How is that better? 🙂

Don’t forget Trent Dilfer never lost a Super Bowl either. 🙂

  56. this list means nothing….. how can a list of nfl greatest of ANYTHING… not include players from the greatest team of all time…….. Viking nation rocks… skol

  57. Well, Belichick only has himself to blame for not kicking FG on 4th down with 6 minutes to go & giving Peyton’s receivers all that room for short passes in the 1st quarter.

  58. I would’ve found a way to include Manny Fernandez of the Dolphins as interior lineman. He had 17 tackles and a sack against the Redskins in SBVII

  59. No lie, I’m a Packers fan and I’d still pick Devin Hester over Desmond Howard even though the Bears lost the Super Bowl against the Colts. He was the only reason they were in the game the entire time lol. Arguably the best kick returner of all-time!

  60. Joe Gibbs is so far above every other coach, it’s not even funny. Shula, Walsh, Landry, Noll, Belichick, all won super bowls with first ballot HOF QBs. Joe Gibbs won three super bowls with three different QBs. None are HOFers. Doug Williams, Joe Theismann, and Mark Rypian. In fact, Gibbs is by far the greatest coach of all time. He actually had to out-coach everybody. It’s easy when you have a HOF QB.

  61. This would have been more interesting if it was based on play during Super Bowls and not seasonal MVP and popularity protocols. Shame, shame.

  62. You can simply dismiss the entire defense and sub the 85 Bears in. Patriots had -19 yards at halftime.

  63. Troy Polumalu played in 3 Super Bowls and was the #1 defensive player in each of the 3 teams. Don’t feel so obligated to jam some ’70’s Dolphins guy in there just because …

  64. bucrightoff says:

Considering Ray Lewis murdered some guys at the Super Bowl, you obviously can’t have such a killer omission.

Do people really think this is true?smdh

And whoever mentioned Johnny Unitas…he was TERRIBLE in the Super Bowl. One of the greatest ever but terrible in the Super Bowl.

  65. Brady & Belichek should be there instead of Montana & Noll. Don’t remember L.Taylor doing much in SBs. And T. Davis over Franco.
