Report: Peyton Manning has told close friends he’ll retire

AP

In a not-so-private moment, Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning told Patriots coach Bill Belichick that 2015 may be Peyton’s last rodeo. In much more private moments, Manning reportedly has been more definitive.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Manning has told close friends that he’ll retire after Super Bowl 50.

Manning consistently has declined to tip his hand publicly, most recently in a Pro Bowl halftime interview with ESPN’s Chris Berman. If Manning is done, the decision represents a stark contrast from his mindset in November, when he was telling teammates that he intended to play in 2016.

Circumstances have changed dramatically since then, however. After exiting the lineup to rehab a partially torn plantar fascia tendon in this foot, Manning wasn’t expected to make it back to the field in 2015. And surely he wouldn’t have wanted a string of subpar performances to represent his final NFL season.

Now that Manning has made an unexpected return and an event more unexpected run to the Super Bowl, how can he top it in 2016? He can’t, especially if the Broncos win.

  1. It wouldn’t shock anybody, would it ? Just play as a game manager on Sunday and hope that Cam & co suffer stage fright or something similar.

  2. How close are these “friends” that leaked it to the media. Regardless, its time for Peyton to retire, he’s already proven he’s a hofer and the best QB of his generation, what’s left to prove?
The funny part is I never really liked the guy but I always respected him. Godspeed, Peyton!

  3. Of course he’ll retire, it’s all setup with the league so they can continue to sell us more bullcrap about how he’s a classy guy.

He’s not the person most people think he is and he’s clearly lying about taking HGH.

  4. It’ll suck not having Peyton around. One of my favorite players. Football won’t be the same with him gone. I’m lucky enough to have watched one of the greats play for a long time. Always been a die hard Niners fan, but Sunday I’m going to be a huge Broncos fan. Thanks, Peyton for all the great years!

  5. I for one am pulling for Manning to go out with a win…

Unfortunately Peyton’s record against Super Bowl QBs not named Rex Grossman couldn’t be more pitiful

  6. Of course he will retire. He knows he’s guilty of taking hgh and thinks that by retiring he will get the league off his back.
Well Mr Manning, retiring and throwing your wife under the bus won’t get you off the hook with the feds, just see one Clemons, Rodger

  7. It would really be something for the Broncos to send a 2nd HOF QB into the Sunset with a RING!
    GO BRONCOS!!!

  8. Hmm… he said he wanted to play at least another year and now it looks like he’s saying he is certainly retiring. Right after the HGH story hit.

Coincidence I’m sure. Unless it isn’t.

    🙂

  9. Best QB of his HGH generation, maybe. He was done 5 years ago when he couldn’t throw the ball 5 yards according to the Washington Post. Everything since then has been a lie.

  10. This is nothing but a transparent ploy to work the refs.

Peyton is smart enough to know that the league would absolutely love for him to have a storybook ending and go out as a SB champ.

There will be tremendous pressure on the zebras to make that happen if they really believe it’s his last game.

  11. Apparently these friends are not as “close” as Peyton may think given that they repeated a private conversation to the media.

Good thing he owns brady in the playoffs.

I agree, it would really be something, since the odds are it won’t happen.

  14. Funny how he said he would be playing next year until the HGH shipment became a story. Love how he threw his wife under the bus!
43-8 will seem like a dream score. Interesting that the Pats beat Seattle in the super bowl the VERY next year that Denver lost 43-8!

  15. It seems like every year is this guy’s last. Just announce it already. You don’t need to make it this huge deal with a special press conference and whatnot.

  16. Eli Manning 2-0 against Brady in the big dance

I can’t wait to wear my Malcolm Butler jersey next time Im in Seahag country XD XD XD

    🙂

  17. The only way Peyton retires is if The Broncos win the Superbowl.
Just like other Quarterbacks he is a competitor,
and he will probably play for another year or until the Broncos have no chance at making the Super Bowl
Otherwise he will retire sadly after he is booed off the field. I remember when that happened to Fran Tarkington, and Tommy Kramer replaced him.
I know I was there. Vikings fans recall him nearly as a God now.. back then, it was embarrassing to be a 16
yr old Tark fan, and listen to it.
Good Luck Peyton, you were one of the Good Guys.

and then the broncos slip back to mediocrity
    —————–
I don’t think this argument has the same effect anymore.

  19. I don’t think I would have a huge problem with him using HGH for a limited time to help him heal from his neck susreries. You can tell he isn’t an abuser like Barry Bonds, the guy comes into Baseball 169 lbs, and goes out a huge 230 lb. Beast.
Or like the 70’s Steelers and Raiders that admit winning Super Bowls with most the team juiced!

Going out the best of his time and not known for deflating his footballs. 2-0 against garbage time Tom when it matters in the AFC championship game.

12’s, lol. Still with the Brady bashing but quite the change on the Manning assessment from after the KC game:

    He’s done like dinner.
Wish it was Brady performing like this instead.

We get that Manning had the decency to get clobbered by the ‘Hawks in the SB and mean ol’ Brady ended their quest to repeat but it’s been a year. You still mad bro?
BTW here is this Pats fan’s Manning assessment from after that game:

    chesswhileyouplaycheckers says:

Guy was a heck of a quarterback for good long run. He has nothing to be ashamed of, Father Time is undefeated. I’m a Pats fan and even I hope this performance isn’t the end, that this is was because he was banged up. Good competition makes the game worthwhile and I hope for one more Brady/Manning duel.

But 12’s are great football fans, right?

  21. Of course he’ll retire..he barely made it thru this year and still missed 5 or 6 games. Dudes done.

  22. Quite the situation if you ask me..he wins this game, his ineptitudein the playoffs will be saved. He loses he’ll go down as the greatest qb in regular season history.

  23. The only player that I genuinely miss watching is Barry Sanders. He was as big of a part of Thanksgiving as turkey is for so many years. Thanksgiving isn’t the same anymore.

  24. Peyton hasn’t told anyone. Eli said so last night. Way to go out on a limb with “friends” source.

    Brady fans logic

    —–
And yet it’s funny how the JAG QBs like the Dilfers and Brad Johnsons can never win more than one each while Brady has 4.

    Go figure.

    🙂

  26. Wow! What a career. I remember when this kid was in high school. He certainly came into the league at a good time for QBs, and he was the perfect fit for this generation. He’s a smart guy that loves to work hard and study. Come to think of it, he would have thrived in any era. Might not have put up the passing numbers, but the wins would be there. This dude is a winner! I can’t wait to see what he’s going to do next.

  27. Not to say that Manning isn’t likely to be walking away, it is certainly looking that way, but does anyone believe that Manning has even one ‘close friend’ that would be willing to even tell Ian Rapoport what time it is? Unless, of course, it served an agenda of some kind.

  28. I love Peyton and I want him to have a GREAT game! I do hope he wins, and for his health and his family I hope he then retires. I will miss seeing him play.

  29. Peyton entered the playoffs with 9 TDs and 17 INTs and a rating of 67. That’s the worst statistics for a QB sneering the playoffs in the Super Bowl era. Add that with his pathetic 2006 playoff run to win the Super Bowl with 3 TDs and 7 INTs and a rating of 70.4 and you have the two most pathetic runs to the Super Bowl for a QB in history. Is that something that one of the greatest QBs should have on his resume? Dilfer or Johnson weren’t even that bad. LOL. Those are real facts sadly. The Peyton sheep are ridiculous. Funny where’s all Peytons the greatest articles leading up to the Super Bowl? Oh right, that ship sailed. It’s Brady and ESPN, FOX sports, NFL network know they can’t sell that BS now.

  30. Bad news for Carolina who has the misfortune of getting in between the league’s golden boy and a final super bowl win. This game will be called tight…on the Panthers side. Denver will be allowed to do anything they want.

The Brady/Manning debate is easily settled by asking one question. When all is said and done who’s career would you rather have had? If you said Manning you’re only fooling yourself. Pretty sure under sodium pentathol Peyton would too.

As much as people don’t want to admit it, this was the case in the game against New England as well. Patriot receivers were actually tackled in the open field on occassion and they didn;t even call “illegal contact.” That’s why home field was so important. You can do this for the home team. It’s much harder to do for a road team. The Super Bowl is kind of nuetral, but the whole world is watching, so it can’t get toooo bad. Most likely it happens early, to help Denver to a lead, and then they will pick their spots, in critical moments, to try and help preserve a win for the NFL Sponsors heavily invested in Manning, and of course, Peyton, so they can sell all that memorabilia and those documentaries etc.

    More HGH, Better Players……

  34. With “friends” like that, who needs any enemies??? OR….does the media make up their “sources” just to get viewership and readership?…..smh, either way!

I sure wish we could make this an adults only board.

  36. Most likely Rappafart realizing that there was a 50% chance that he could be right served a big pile of it up and Florio was only to happy to regurgitate it. They’re worse than two old women gossiping and spreading rumors at the church social.

Sounds like sour grapes to me! At least he didn’t break his cell phone like some other So called classy guy.
    2 questions for you:
Does tommy boy ALWAYS break his cellphone before he gets a new one?

And did those footballs have to do a #1 or #2 or both in the bathroom, and did they at least WIPE?

  38. He should have retired three years ago. Nuts, bolts and HGH are holding him together. He’s lucky the Broncos have such a good defense. That’s what got him where he is.

    ________________

Yep. Only going up against the QB that b slapped the legion of bust and the Cards. What could go wrong?

  40. It would be great to go out a winner but the Panthers have different ideas. Pete Sampras went out a winner. He could easily have kept playing but he wisely saw the difficulty of remaining at the elite level. Everyone wrote Sampras off before his final US Open run. Win or lose, PM should retire. His age and body have caught up with him.

No, Eli said Peyton never told HIM. Peyton is not nice to Eli and in the interview, Eli a man of class who adores his brother, said Peyton never told him and that he does not hear from Peyton often. In other interviews, he also said he does not hear from Peyton often. As for these “close friends” with friends like that who needs enemies or it could be just marketing by the media to sell media time
