Faulk “sad” for St. Louis, still thinks Patriots cheated to win Super Bowl

Getty Images

Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk stopped by PFT Live Tuesday on Radio Row in San Francisco and talked about the Rams moving from St. Louis — where Faulk was part of a Super Bowl winner in 1999 — to Los Angeles.

“My immediate reaction is that I’m sad for St. Louis, sad for the city,” Faulk said. “I’m thankful for what the fans gave us during our time there.

“I think Los Angeles is now ready for football. There are enough Rams, Raiders fans, and then the transplants. It’s time for us to have football in that market.”

Faulk was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011. He now works for NFL Network, so he’s been busy talking Super Bowl for 10 days. He said he remembers his team winning Super Bowl XXXIV more than he remembers losing to the Patriots two years later, though he won’t pass on a chance to bring up his belief that the Patriots cheated to win that game.

“We could all see the tapes and see what they saw and that would end it,” Faulk said. “But we know that’s not possible.”

Faulk was with the Colts in 1998, Peyton Manning’s rookie year, before he was traded to the Rams. He said Tuesday he believes Sunday’s Super Bowl will be Manning’s final game.

“If you know Peyton, he’s avoiding it because he doesn’t want to put that pressure on anyone else of what his last game should be. He just wants to play and not deal with it,” Faulk said. “He understands it won’t alleviate pressure from his teammates.

“I think if we hear it, it will be on the podium after he’s done, saying that he’s walking anyway. Every athlete, that’s the dream, winning that last one…and at that moment tell people that’s it and ride off into the sunset.”

  1. At least we know that he’ll NEVER be impartial when it comes to analysis that involves the Patriots. #truecolors

  2. Do you know who really cheated you out of a Super Bowl, Marshall? Mike Martz. But way to go still pounding the drum of a story that has been retracted and debunked across multiple media outlets.

  3. Faulk will be whining to his dying day about this.

Guess what. 100 million dollar corporations or whatever the Herald was worth at the time don’t retract stories that have even the tiniest shred of truth in them. They leave themselves open to huge liability if the target of their lies chooses to sue them.

The Pats beat you fair and square. If he had half the spine left that he showed on the field he’d admit it and move on with his life.

  4. Jesus christ .. spygate this spygate that.. They beat you guys up.. just like the Broncos did to the patriots.. they owned the LOS and Willie McGinest destroyed you.

I’m not even a Patriots fan but man every year Marshall? Every year.

  5. Cue the Patriots whiners in 3, 2, 1…

    Oh wait. That’s me.

Shut up Marshall. Maybe try not letting Willie McGinest and Mike Vrabel beat you up at the line of scrimmage next time.

“Today a dynasty is born” – Tory Holt

  6. By cheating does he mean Pats played man press on the WR and chip Faulk on every play and get Kurt out of rhythm?
sort of like how the Broncos beat the Pats this year as well. not that hard to see

  7. Marshall Faulk is a piece of garbage. Shut the hell up man it’s pathetic. The Patriots whooped the Rams and should’ve won by way more had it not been for a bogus penalty negating a 99-yard fumble return TD.

  8. Guess he missed the ESPN apology regarding the erroneous report that the Pats taped a Rams practice. Maybe he can ask Rodney Harrison what he thinks about it!

  9. Tapes? What tapes? Surely Faulk doesn’t think that the Patriots turned over to the NFL any tapes that would implicate them in cheating? Whatever tapes Goodell got from the team six years after that Super Bowl showed nothing but what they were accused of in 2007, which was filming defensive signals from the sidelines. And that was pretty common in 2001, and tolerated by the League. So what is his beef?

  10. I shared an elevator with Marshall Faulk once and all my starstruck idiot brain could say to him was, “You’re Marshall Faulk.” I wish I would have said something classy like, “Maybe if they had helicopters AND jets… they could stop you.”

  11. Dude, that story about taping the Rams practice before the SB has been debunked, recanted and apologized for, I don’t know how many times.

Let it go, dude, let it go.

  12. Marshall cares about Marshal that is all, he is the greatest in his mind and always will be..although we all know the Pats cheated and finally caught.

  13. Well. Just like Ray can never produce his white suit from that infamous night, the NFL destroyed the evidence of what the Pats did. Logic would dictate if it was a small violation, they wouldnt have destroyed the tapes.

If i lost the SB to a team later penalized for cheating, i’d probably feel like i was cheated too.

  14. Pats were supposedly stealing defensive signals to help Brady. They ended up scoring only one offensive TD in each of the 3 playoff games in 01. They won that year on defense and special teams. Stop lying to yourself.

  15. Goodell covering up for the Pats by destroying the tapes is hilarious. He probably destroyed them because there was nothing incriminating on them. He doesnt favor the Pats, he over punished them on two occasions. Get Real. Heres what really happened Marshall, you guys Lost to 14 point underdogs with the “Greatest Show of Turf.” They would go on to win 2 of the next 3 super bowls, while the Rams would only have 1 winning season from 02-15.

  16. Marshal, your head is so BIG, I don’t know how you get through the door.

Partiots took away the Lombardi from you and they became the Dynasty.

If they cheated, then they would never of REPEATED 4x

Yes, by the burnt tapes. LOL

I’m just happy not to have to watch the Pat*riots play this week-end in Super Bowl 50.

  18. You don’t have to be fans of either team to see that the Patriots probably cheated their way to a win there.

If there was nothing left to hide on the tapes, why immediately destroy them before anyone else could take a look at them?

  19. think just a little…

He claims that the Patriots knew the Rams OFFENSIVE plays because of taping the Rams DEFENSIVE signals,

or he believes the false, disproven, RETRACTED allegation that somebody taped a walk-through practice.

The allegation of taping a walk-through was denied/retracted by:
-the newspaper who reported it (Herald, on the FRONT PAGE)
-the reporter who wrote it (Tomase)
-the actual source for the story (Walsh, the fired PArs employee)

Faulk and Kurt Warner live in paranoid fantasy land.

  20. Marshall Faulk is the perfect example of an extremely low IQ ex-player getting a job that he is not qualified for. Every time he opens his mouth I cringe. He is an embarassment. Perhaps he could go back to school, develop a vocabulary, learn how to speak correctly and not be so offensive to people with an education.

Nope. They were recanted by the Herald. The person who “taped the walktrough” admitted that he had made that up.

  22. Tell Faulk to shut up!!! The Patriots have been over penalized and over criticized for what they actually did. Why don’t you go after Manning for what he has been accused, huh CHICKEN!!!!!!

    ___________

Uh, logic dictates that if a newspaper prints a FRONT and BACK page retraction, they really screwed up the story. And logic dictates that if the NFL shows all of the tapes to the media before destroying them, they aren’t trying to hide stuff.

  24. It’s so funny that the New England Patriots and the G.O.A.T. continue to be in everyone’s collective heads, even in the off instance that they’re not SB participants. I love that they cause so much frustration, anger, and jealousy.

  25. 87hollywoodhorn says: Feb 2, 2016 5:46 PM

You know they cheat. Theres just so many rich/powerful/privileged ppl from that zone that the media will always feature lots of ppl loudly defending them.
    ——

St Louis as rich/powerful/privileged ? I don’t think so man…. But the St. Louis Cardinals did get busted pretty hard for cheating last year. Not sure what that has to do with this story though.

WRONG, the NFL played the tapes for all the media to see before getting rid of them. But thanks for playing.

  27. Greatest Chokers on Turf

Too bad Faulk, you and the rest of the Rams went in over confident and thought the Pats would just lie down. Smoked. Big fat baby.

  28. This guy can’t understand that he lost that game. For the rest of the people who think the same, look up the stats for this game.
It was a huge advantage for the Rams. He and Kurk lost the game for them

  29. Sadly Mr Faulk and Hateroids everywhere have another bad bit if news coming. Goodell admits PSI readings weren’t recorded this year. Now why on earth would he bury data that would help his case?

  30. Story was vetted debunked across multiple media outlets and retracted by the Boston Hearld on May 14 2008.

Here is what the full page retraction said….

“On Feb. 2, 2008, the Boston Herald reported that a member of the New England Patriots’ video staff taped the St. Louis Rams’ walkthrough on the day before Super Bowl XXXVI. While the Boston Herald based its Feb. 2, 2008, report on sources that it believed to be credible, we now know that this report was false, and that no tape of the walkthrough ever existed.”

Marshall Faulk – you are a Coward.

  31. The cherry on top of the stupidity of the sundae of Marshall’s whining is that the Rams have said that they practiced their red zone plays in the walk through.

The Rams got to the red zone once in that game and scored a touchdown.

So, even if you’re Marshall Faulk and believe that, despite the recounted stories, that your walk through was taped, they got nothing out of doing so!

You lost on your own merit Marshall.

  32. No tape ever found of Rams walk through.

Walsh testified to both Goodell and Specter there was never a tape of Rams walk through.

Boston Herald retracted the story because they never verified the tape ever existed.

Faulk is backside hurt based on something that may not even exist. Insisting to see all the tapes is still largely irrelevant given the absence of that tape. It’s kind of pathetic to be hanging onto this whole cheating thing when there wasn’t a ton of evidence to support it to begin with. Forget the fact his QB threw two INTs. One of which sealed their fate.

  33. “Marshall Faulk is the perfect example of an extremely low IQ ex-player getting a job that he is not qualified for.”
    ———————–

Funny then how Peyton Manning named Faulk as the smartest teammate he’s ever had. And I quote: “I had never played with a guy who just knew everyone else’s jobs.”

It shouldn’t be very hard to see that Marshall Faulk is a very smart person. Though if you’re not very smart yourself, it may prove difficult.

I think you’re the only one happy that the Pats are not in the SB. I mean, as soon as they lost, prices dropped 38% and even now, people can’t stop talking about them. Even Denver players are stucked on the AFC CG instead of the game ahead of them.

  35. Faulk was the best offensive weapon the Rams had that year.

Bill had McGinest hit him at the line of scrimmage on almost every play. Faulk ended up on his back most of the time and was basically a non-factor in the game.

Faulk cost his team the game by being out-played.

    End of story Marshall!

  36. ———————–

    —————-
He clearly never played for Belichick. He even somehow know what the other team was going to do. It is as if he had seen it somewhere before.

  37. Faulk was a great RB but he’s awful in studio…..NFL network needs to revamp the pregame show, those guys (all of them except Warner) are terrible….

  38. “We could all see the tapes and see what they saw and that would end it,” Faulk said. “But we know that’s not possible.”
    _________________________________________

Its also convenient that there are no tapes to look at, so you can continue to whine until the end of time that they cheated and there’s no way to prove otherwise.

Having said that, he’s entitled to his opinion and his feelings. He’s pissed they lost the game and he and others on the team feel better blaming it on the Pats cheating.

I cried when I lost big games in high school. I can’t imagine what its like to lose the freaking SuperBowl. That must be beyond painful and I get wanting to cling to any reason that absolves you from the loss. Doesn’t make it any less annoying to hear, of course, but I get where its coming from.

  39. That game was over as soon as the announcer said, “Choosing to be introduced as a team…”

  40. Come on Marshall, it’s ok. There is no Easter Bunny or Tooth Fairy. No one filmed your walk through. Willie McGinest is why you lost! He knocked the bah-jesus out of you.
Whatever you need to do to ease your pain, crybaby!

  41. It’s important to acknowledge that the Patriots cheated at any and every opportunity…It’s dishonest to future NFL fans 20-30 years from now who might look at a list of Superbowl Winners and otherwise wouldn’t know how or why the Patriots are there.

  42. Faulk continues to contribute to his sad legacy. Instead of confronting his own shortcomings he continues to look for the boogey man in the shadows.

Faulk you are a sad man and failed to provide a meaningful contribution in the Super Bowl against the Patriots. They figured out how to play against your team and how to defend against your finesse and softness.

  43. Faulk and St. Louis were 14 point favorites to win the Super Bowl that year. 14 points. When the line is that high it’s harder to digest a loss. A loss where they waltzed in just thinking they had it won..

Gotta play the game Mr Faulk. Willie did. No one to blame but your coach back then.

Now get over it because I’m tired of hearing your whine every single year.

    Go Pats!

  44. Spycams, deflated footballs, bugged locker rooms, stolen play sheets, visitors sideline communications going out at critical times during the game…and they still cant beat The Denver Broncos.

  45. xsorethumbx says:

    ==================================

I don’t know. He may mean Belichick getting fined half a million dollars. Crazy thought, I know.

  46. Marshall, you are 100% correct. Pete Carroll of the Seahawks agree with you. The Pats also have been taping the Seahawks Defensive Plays. How else Malcolm Butler was able to easily intercept that Wilson pass!
Sick of your whining about being beaten by a Surprise team. Oh wait, is that how the Broncos were able to beat the Pats in the 2015 AFL game? I think not. The Pats were beaten by the same type of defence as played by the two Giants SB wins…..

  47. Has anyone noticed how after Deflategate this website suddenly got a surge of pro-Patriots trolls?

Just look at the article that’s linked in the OP. Only a couple years ago thousands acknowledged the Patriots probably cheated their way to a Super Bowl.

Yet now everyone who says anything that could possibly question the Patriots, truthful or not, gets downvoted into the ground. Nothing about spygate has changed, but the votes did a complete 180.

Again, this just started happening a couple weeks after deflategate. Something is awfully fishy. It seems we may have a troll army in our midst.

  48. .
In the 1963 AFC Championship Game, the San Diego Chargers beat the then Boston Patriots 52-0. I think they cheated. C’mon Chargers fans! It’s time to come clean.
    .

  49. “WRONG, the NFL played the tapes for all the media to see before getting rid of them.”
    ———————-

^ A perfect example of one of these lying trolls trying to erase documented history.

And I quote the New York Times article entitled “Questions Linger About Why N.F.L. Destroyed Patriots’ Tapes”:

“Two crisis-management experts used the same word — fishy — to describe the league’s handling of the situation, saying the destruction of the tapes raised questions about what they contained.

“The strategy is profoundly bad,” said Al Tortorella, the managing director of crisis management for Los Angeles-based Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide. “I don’t know why they would destroy the tapes. That’s astounding. There’s no criminality here, but it sure doesn’t pass the smell test.””

Now why would the New York Times point out how the destruction of the tapes raised questions about what they contained if everyone in the media got to see them?

2 questions that I have that no one has been able to tell me:

  53. Faulk is wrong about Manning. Manning won’t announce his retirement right after the game. Say what you want about Manning, (for example, I think he’s overrated and nowhere near the best ever), he has respect for the game and his opponents. He knows if he announces right after the game, it would minimize the spotlight on the winning team (win or lose) and MVP.
While I’m rooting for Carolina, part of me hopes that Manning is up on the podium after the game, with his family, so we can all see how big his wife’s head is from all the HGH use…

  57. Faulk said in the past that he knows the Pats cheated because they had put in new red zone plays that had never been run before, yet they were all over them.
Marshall, I think they were just better than you. Not only that, but you either had a very bad memory (cte?) or you were lying. You only got in the red zone once, and YOU SCORED!
Isn’t it up to your team to get there more often so that you can use them? Or did you have telepathic knowledge (which would be cheating) because you knew that they stole your plays, even though they didn’t need them?
Reminds me of the loser kid in high school who egged the houses of all the girls wouldn’t date him – even though he never asked them.

  58. You people… Montana ADMITS his linemen cheated by spraying slippery stuff on their jerseys. Rice ADMITS to using stickum on his hands. But apparently…accusations against Brady or taping from the wrong spot in the stadium makes the Patriots or Brady’s titles invalid? The comments are so farcical it defies logic.

  59. The fact that he’s an employee of the league says a lot. I have the tape of that game, and you guys lost because Bruschi, McGuinest, and everybody else on that defense knocked the ever living crap out of you guys. I also remember the primetime regular season match, Belichick chose to blitz Warner and he was able to burn New England almost every time, for the SB, Belichick’s strategy was to cover and rush 3. Pure Genius!

  60. You haters are so so pathetic. If the Pats are such cheaters how did they lose to the Giants twice in Super Bowls they were favored to win? How did the Jets roll into Foxboro and beat the Pats in the 2011 divisional round? Its football, anything can happen against two professional teams. I know I can’t speak for all Pats fans, but when the Patriots lose I don’t blame it on the refs, weather, a helmet catch, or think the other team could have cheated. I just accept the fact that your team was better than mine on that day and I move on. It’s a beautiful thing to be a Patriots fan. I know year after year, my team has a chance to win the Super Bowl. Now all you jealous haters try and digest that and enjoy the Patriots-less Super Bowl this weekend, because they’ll be back next year!!

  61. Marshall is right on one count. Against the rules the Patriots filmed the Rams and other teams practices.

The Cardinals belong in St. Louis, not the Rams. The Rams belong in LA, the Cards in StL and Phoenix can get it’s own team and name.

I think how the league handled the Browns moving from Cleveland was right. The name stays in the location.

  62. What a whiny sore sport. Super Bowl 36, AKA “The Silence of the Rams” I hope this haunts Faulk all the way to the grave. He also can’t face up to the fact that his cousin Kevin has more rings. Learn how to own up & lose like a man, maggot!!
YOU LOST GET OVER IT !!!!!!!!!!!!

  63. The Patriots lost at home to the Rams earlier that season. They knew if they got to the Super Bowl they’d likely face the Rams. Does anyone really doubt that they were already illegally taping their opponent’s sideline?

  64. ATT – the Patriots did not film other team practices. That BS story has been shot down.

I’m sure you are getting all stoked for the Easter Bunny in a few weeks.

  65. Us Steeler fans know how you feel Marshall. The Pats definitely cheated to win the 01 afccg. They absolutely knew our plays ahead of time. Lousy cheats.

  66. All anyone has to do is look at the scoring summary for that game to know that no one cheated.

    The Rams just got outplayed.

2 years ago, the Broncos had the most prolific offense ever, and nearly got shut out in the Super Bowl. No cheating was involved. They just got outplayed.

  67. Pittsburgh Deli – serving today – CRYBABY SOUP.

Wouldn’t be film study, tendencies, Kordell Stewart etc that contributed. Or a punt return (blame Hochuli for spotting the ball after a penalty on Pitts on wrong hash mark)and blocked FG for TD’s.

  70. Ignorance is bliss.

Fearsome – it wasn’t “illegal” (like a cop was going to arrest the sideline videographer) to tape opposing sidelines until 2007 (other teams were doing it). Then after sideline recording was banned, you could but from designated areas in the stadium.

As I posted before, does anyone think a sideline shot would show anymore than a zoom shot from the stadium locations that were allowed?

Uninformed people who continue to misconstrue facts are why idiots think what was common and allowed in 2001 etc., was ‘illegal.’ You sound like pink hats when you don’t understand the rules.

    ———
Faulk was nearly unstoppable in the open field. He’s a HOF’er.

    And your qualifications are?

  74. There’s nothing more sad than a sore, excuse-making loser. Last year, it was the Colts, and they embarrassed themselves with the botched sting operation. Now every year we’re all treated to the one man band whining of Marshall Faulk…

Anyone who watched that game knows how the Rams lost–they got smacked in the mouth and that Patriots defense (that was unheralded at the time) snuck up on the league as one of the best for about a 5 year stretch. They were also coached to be humble. They weren’t the type of unit to give themselves an arrogant nickname like “L.O.B” or “Greatest Show” or whatever else, and still aren’t. Belichick would never tolerate that nonsense. All of the Rams players were saying “Dynasty, baby” to each other before the game. Hilarious every time I watch it! Reminds me of Seattle and the Pittsburgh teams that always lost on their home turf to the Pats–waaay overconfident. Oh well, pride always comes before the fall.

The only dynasty that has actually come out of this era was, and still is, the Patriots. Funny, none of the players thump their chests about it though. Interesting.

Marshall, you got beat because you had no respect for your opponent’s ability in 2001. That, and Mike Martz had no counterpunch at all during the contest for the superior Belichick.

Now, time to quit making up ridiculous excuses and get over it.

Actually, I think it was Ricky Proehl who said that.

of course, technically speaking he was right. A dynasty WAS born that day. The Patriots dynasty.

  76. You keep a conspiracy alive by destroying evidence. It’s a sad statement that the tapes were destroyed. He can be bitter, but when those tapes were destroyed, you made the bitter permanent.
The Rams didn’t play their best that day and that cost them the win. I don’t blame him for being angry about it and that Super Bowl changed the NFL landscape.

Cue the Patriots whiners in 3, 2, 1…

    Oh wait. That’s me.

Shut up Marshall. Maybe try not letting Willie McGinest and Mike Vrabel beat you up at the line of scrimmage next time.

Tory was correct……a dynasty was born on that day…..it just wasn’t the Rams
