Cam Newton adds MVP to Saturday night haul

AP

Early in Saturday night’s NFL Honors, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was named the Associated Press offensive player of the year.

That wasn’t the only award he wound up taking home before the night was out. As widely expected, Newton was also named the winner of the Most Valuable Player award. With Ron Rivera taking coach of the year honors, it was a good night for the Panthers although they’d gladly bump it down to the second-best night of the weekend with a victory over the Broncos in Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara on Sunday night.

Newton’s regular season — voting was done before the playoffs — included 35 passing touchdowns despite losing top receiver Kelvin Benjamin for the season due to a torn ACL, 10 rushing touchdowns and, of course, 15 wins in 16 tries as the Panthers raced to the top record in the league. While the Panthers got strong seasons from many players, everything on offense flowed through Newton and his play, which included just one inteception over the final eight games of the season, lifted the team well beyond most people’s expectations.

Newton was not a unanimous choice as Tom Brady and Carson Palmer each received one vote, but he was an overwhelming one.

  1. Best record. Most touchdowns combined. Most exciting player in the league…How was this not unanimous?

I mean I’m rooting for the Broncos and hope 18 gets another ring…but cam was the only choice for mvp this year.

  2. Phinsaaa – Ya cause making it to the AFC Championship game and finishing 2nd in the MVP voting is such a terrible thing. Obviously Brady had trouble throwing the ball this year as he led the league in TDs and finished 3rd in passing yards. You really should change your name cause if I were a Dolphins fans I would be embarrassed by your comments.

  3. There were only a few choices tb12, Wilson, brown but cam was the best one they could make. Good job. Now go beat the dirtiest, classless team with their hgh qb and give them their record 5th SB loss.

  5. Can someone please explain how they can post this yet? I’m still watching NFL honors but they make it sound like its already over. Is what I’m watching a replay?

Yeah, what kind of loser only finishes second in MVP voting?

  7. so I guess no doing your job when the defense is on the field is OK now.

    the Cam gushing worship continues

  8. Cam vastly exceeded EVERYBODY’S expectations this year. To do what he did with Ginn and Cotchery as your main WR’s is crazy. This has got to be killing his haters lol Well deserved Cam, now finish it off with a superbowl win.

  9. Cards fan here. I wanted to see Carson win it, but I knew it was going to Cam. Well deserved. Dude is legit and the Panthers are going to be a force for a long time because of it.

They have already lost five, 1977, 1986, 1987, 1989, 2013. They are tied with the Vikings at 5 losses. The Broncos have been worse in the big game than the Vikings, losing by an average of 18 pts with a total of negative 126 net points in Super Bowls combined (including their wins). They have won two of them, but when they lose them it’s been by an average of over four touchdowns.

  11. It’s really too bad for Cam. He’ll only get to enjoy his MVP award for like a day, until he has to face the adversity of dealing with winning the Super Bowl MVP award. 2 weeks before the game, but 1 day between regular season and Super Bowl MVPs? Come on, man.

  12. How does Wilson not get a vote. He carried Hawks on his back to playoffs must have all wanted a cam mvp. Btw Wilsons stats dwarfed cams in almost every conceivable way and not one vote?….collusion maybe btw Hawks one of my least favorite teams just looking from outside in

  13. Sky is the limit for Cam.
Wonder how many rings he would win if he had some Ernie Adams led scheme where opponents intel was stolen and radio-ed into his helmet past the allotted timeframe.

  14. There was no doubt in my mind that Cam was the MVP by about week 13, how ’bout everyone else? I mean kudos to the other guys of course, but, come on… He deserved it and everyone knows it. Stop being jealous and just suck it up, buttercups!

  15. Congratulations to Cam Newton.

I think he was remarkable all year, he’s in the Super Bowl, and he it’s a well deserved accolade.

I understand Tom Brady got one vote, I understand Carlson Palmer got one vote as well. Probably hard core Pats fan and hard core Cardinals fan that cast those votes, but it doesn’t remove anything from the justice of the award.

Usual losers taking a news item about Cam Newton and making it about Brady. Thank you I guess…it’s Super Bowl week and these people can’t keep the Pats out of their mind and mouth…remarkable.

  16. Brady did more against better competition. Brady faces better defenses in the AFC East, Cam faces weak NFC South defenses. Brady should have been the MVP.

  17. I’m pulling for manning to get a ring and go out on top. As far as MVP there was no doubt. Even though I say this I was still called a “hater” and was told I’m a racist jerk for not pulling for cam. Let me just clarify something. Out of all the AFC playoff teams this year if ANY of them (except the Texans cuz they’re the hometown team) other than Denver had made it ud be pulling for Carolina. I asked this individual since I’m white ,and pulling for Denver, makes me a racist hater does the fact that 8 out of 10 black folks I know are pulling for Carolina does that make them racist haters as well? Of course I never got a response. Just try to remember racism is a two way street. So if me pulling for Denver ,cuz of mannings race, makes me racist the same could be said about the black folks pulling for Carolina cuz of cam.

  18. I just can’t help it. The guy’s a flog on the field. Maybe a dirty big face plant in SB will teach him a bit of humility and sportsmanship. How much ‘fun’ did he have when they were losing? It’d be nice to admire the man as well as the athletic prowess. I don’t like feeling like this about people

  19. Corey Brown, Brenton Bersin ,Devin Funchess ,Ted Ginn Jr.,and Jerricho Cotchery..That has to be the worst wide receiver unit in the history of the NFL…Yet not only did Cam Newton go 17-1 with that garbage ,Cam Newton also has a chance to win Super Bowl 50 as well…Just Unbelievable …

I too am hoping the Broncos come out of this game with 5 Superbowl losses. Cause that means they will have beaten the Panthers for their third win. (previous losses include Dallas, Washington, NYG, SF and Seattle)

Glad to see you’re one of our loyal fans.

  21. Newton wants this Super Bowl bad but doesn’t it say something about Bradys greatness that if Newton wins it will only be his first appearance and win and Brady has 6 appearances with 4 wins, and the media is acting like Newton is the greatest player ever. Jeoulousy is a powerful thing.

    ===========

This has some truth to it but the award is subjective and TB has won has his share and Cam has done a great job of leading this team to a 17-1 record. But he has one more game. Awards make you feel good but in the end Rings are the only things that matter.

  23. What people aren’t talking about (at least in these comments is one of the under-rated parts of Cam’s game: he can get you 1 yard, any situation.

4th and 1: I think there was ONE time in the season Cam was stuffed.
Goal Line: Dude either jumps over the top or easily powers in for the TD.

  24. For once, finally, a QB drafted #1 overall who is actually playing up to it. Pay attention kids, this doesn’t happen very often.
