Elway tiptoes around question of whether he wants Peyton back

AP

Apart from the question of whether Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning wants to return is the question of whether the team wants him to return. Broncos G.M. John Elway was asked that question at a Tuesday press conference, and he deftly avoided it.

Here’s the specific question: “I know Peyton has a tough decision to make, but would you personally like to see him come back to the game for another year, and would you be open to him coming back to the team?”

Here’s what Elway said, without ever showing his hand: “You know, I think that it’s important for him — the key thing is for him to want to come back. . . . It’s not really what we want to do. I think the important thing is is it’s going to be his decisions, and so where we get a chance to sit down and talk to him, and that why it’s up to Peyton to see that process. Where he is, where he is in his career, what he thinks he can do, how he can play, what he wants to do from here on out. And so in talking about retirement, retirement’s always hard. I mean you can butt up to that line and crossing that line, taking that final step, saying I am moving on. That is a very — even if the first 99 percent are easy to get there, that last one percent is as hard as that first 99 percent. So that’s why he’s gonna have the time he needs and it’s basically gonna be up to him.”

Later, another question reluctantly was posed to Elway about Peyton’s future with the Broncos.

Here’s the question: “Sorry to ask one more Peyton-related question, but Archie did say on Sunday night that he believed Peyton was done in Denver. Do you think he’s done in Denver?”

“I don’t know why Archie would say that, but obviously that’s up to Archie, and I said we’re gonna give Peyton plenty of time to think about what he wants to do,” Elway said.

The time isn’t unlimited. As noted by Mike Klis of 9news.com, the Broncos need to know what’s going on by March 8, because on March 9 Manning’s $19 million base salary for 2016 becomes fully guaranteed.

If Manning wants to play for the Broncos, and if the Broncos want him (Elway still hasn’t said they do), they’ll need to work out a contract for 2016. Last year, the Broncos initially requested a $10 million pay cut. Eventually, the Broncos dropped Manning’s pay from $19 million to $15 million, with the opportunity to earn the money back.

Complicating matters for the Broncos is that Manning has indeed earned it back, pushing the cap hit from $21.5 million to $25.5 million for 2016.

Few believe that the Broncos will want him at that number. If they want him at any number, the Broncos and Manning need to agree on what the number is. Then, they need to determine whether the contract should be extended in order to push cap dollars into 2017 by turning some of the 2016 pay into a signing bonus.

Regardless of how it all works out, the two sides have less than a month to get there. So, yes, the Broncos are currently being patient. Soon, they’ll be getting impatient.

  1. Elway is a dbg. Next year he’ll be saying things about why he chose to get rid of Manning.

  2. Sorry, Elway isn’t stupid! No way they want Manning back at any price. He is a shell of his former self and Denver has two promising quarterbacks and have other needs the $19M will cover. Peyton, time to say goodbye!

  3. Elway could have suited up and won SB50 himself with that defense.

Save $20mm on QB and use the cash for raises on defense.

  4. It’s over. Elway knows it. We all know it. The only question is whether Peyton Manning knows it. He can walk away at the peak in terms of winning a championship in his final game. I respect that his love for the game brought him back from major neck surgery, but he has to know that he’s not the same player. More importantly, his body is beaten. The stories of how long it takes him to get undressed after a game are horrifying. I will always respect Manning as a player, but there’s no way I can support him as a fan if he chooses to risk his long term health by returning for another season in Denver or anywhere else. It’s his decision to make, but I have already made mine as a fan. Go out on top. There’s nothing left to prove.

  5. Denver sends over picks 31 and 64 to Detroit for Stafford_____________________________
Wrong. Denver is very high on their rookie, third string QB making Brock’s long term future in Denver somewhat murky.

  6. I suspect that Manning will retire, and pick up a job with the Bronc’s front office, maybe after a year off. I think he is intelligent enough to know the body has given up, regardless of the competitive instincts that are built into him.

  7. This is Manning’s opportunity to swallow hard, pass on millions from Denver or someplace else and show he’s the ultimate team player by hanging it up because it’s time.

Either that or he can show that there’s a sucker NFL team born every day and his own pocketbook comes first. Grab your popcorn.

  8. I vote Peyton stays for 1 more season, as the back up! I could never walk away from millions, even if I’ve already made 100M+ and could barely throw.

  9. If Peyton is willing to have a game manager rout for a year then he may be a good option with that D but he’d need to come it at about 7 or 8 million.

Brock is a big unknown and right now Denver needs a guy who won’t lose the game for that, I think Peyton could do that if he’s willing, otherwise the Ryan Fitzpatricks of the world would be good for them.

  10. No way he is coming back, he is not even 10% of his old self. He can’t even throw the ball without risking an interception. Sorry Manning, you were great, but is time to go…

  11. Why wouldn’t you want to give $26mil to a backup caliber, Brad Johnson-esque QB who can’t throw a ball more than 12 yards without it having the same rotation and trajectory as a kickoff?

I don’t get the hate for Elway. The guy has built a hell of a roster the past 4-5 years & just won a SB with a broken down noodle arm QB. I don’t recall him saying or doing anything too terrible either.

Do you have some insider info? I’ve seen nothing stating Denver is high on a 3rd string, 7th round pick….not arguing, just asking for facts.

    Sorry kids, truth hurts.

  16. Manning has had a great career, he’s one of the best, and I appreciate all of the effort he has put in not just to the Broncos but in the game of football in general. That being said, it’s time to hang em up.

The defense won the superbowl. I think we would have won with Brock in the game too (does anyone think that Brock couldn’t have done better than 150 yards and 1 int?). I’m sure Brock would have been able to take the offense on at least ONE touchdown drive, which is more than Manning was able to do (not including his 4 yard TD drive that included 4 runs and one incomplete pass).

  17. Osweiler helps get the Donkeys to the Super Bowl, and now they’re ready to run him outta town?

    Lawl.

  18. How about he go to the Houston Texans or the Dallas Cowboys? Texans have a nice team but a lousy QB situation. And Romo is more broken down than Manning. Either Texas team would benefit from a one-and-done contract with Manning in 2016.

  19. Manning will retire, he has no reason to return at his age, with his record and because of his health.

Elway isn’t saying anything because he has no reason to. Manning will make the announcement soon enough.

  20. Denver fans love Peyton, but want him to hang it up.

Do the right thing, Peyton. Do what Elway did.

If Andrew Luck was smart he would not resign with the Colts and head to Denver.
    ———————-

Why would he resign with the Colts and then go to Denver, anyway?

  22. Another example of the writers on this site trying to find anything to fuel their hatred of the Broncos. He said they are giving Peyton time to decide what HE wants to do. It is a honest answer. Now you clowns try to add crap to it and make it mean that Elway hates Manning, or does not want him here or whatever. Its ridiculous.

  23. I’m not getting on Elway for this. He has to manage the Broncos personnel for long term success and they will never be in better position to cover for Osweiler’s growing pains then they are right now.

  24. Elway has a horseface…
Elway was OVERRATED as a QB…
Elway secretly hates Manning… Elway could of said “This ones for Peyton” at the Superbowl instead he said “this ones for Pat” No it’s not…. The right move was to say “this one is for Peyton” and let him ride off to the sun set… Now Manning wants revenge…
Manning will end up signing with Texans and win another superbowl

  25. I just hope Manning doesn’t become Bratt Favre, making it all about him and hamstringing the team with with his constant waffling.

    He’s done in Denver.

Maybe one more season somewhere. Would be funny if he went to Chicago.
    ……………………………………………………………………..

If Manning wants to keep playing it has to be with a warm weather or dome team. Chicago winters will eat that old man alive. 🙂

  27. Maybe DEN can sign a reasonably priced/cheap game manager. Why pay Peyton 20 million to do the same thing as a journeyman for 5 million or even less? One or two year stop gap to groom their young prospect.

Think about how limited the array of the types of throws Manning makes. He is basically playing 15 yards out. Anything past that is basically incomplete or worse picked.

With such limited responsibilities you can almost putting anyone back there

    Free Agents
    Fitzpatrick
    Matt Hasselbeck

Even Brandon Weeden (He showed promise with Texans on short prep time. Besides Jerry said he throws a beautiful ball)

  28. They can always go out and get Trent Dilfer for similar QB play as they had from Manning this season.

  29. There is literally no upside to Manning returning for another season, anywhere.

He needs to buy the Denver defense Rolex watches and then call it a career.

  30. Budweiser did NOT pay Manning.

    Google search this:
A reason that might be? In 2014, Beer Business Daily reported that the New Orleans native, 39, owns a part of Budweiser’s distributorships in Louisiana.

So yeah, he is lining his pockets but not from a direct payment from Budweiser.

Still tacky and selfish. How much money does this guy need.

  31. Peyton has no business coming back. He has it mentally, but every pass he threw in the Superbowl fluttered. I hope he doesn’t let him get on a medicore team out of pride because it will be ugly.

  32. for PM sake I hope he retires.. no better way then on top.
But if he does play, i assume it would only be in a system suited to him and he would again put up big numbers… his “noodle arm” has been so for years and he still put up numbers, the only thing that stopped him from performing was Kubiac’s scheme. A scheme that has been mediocre at best even with strong armed qbs.

  33. I say this as a 40 year old dude that plays hockey still but only for fun because… yeah. There’s a time where your body has taken too much damage and you just can’t hack it with the young guys in such a violent sport.

Painfully obvious to everyone that Peyton’s at that point. Props to him for being able to put it all out there last Sunday and not sabotage the rest of the team winning a Super Bowl. He’s one of the greatest to ever play the position. But father time is undefeated and he’s come for Manning.

  34. The shocker is that Manning didn’t mention those right wing Papa John pizzas to go with his watered down Bud.

I would love that. Andrew are you listening?

  36. Peyton will not be playing for the Denver Broncos. His time with them is over.

Archie kinda got the ball rolling on the “official” leak by saying ” I think Peyton’s done in Denver. He may be done everywhere.”

  37. Manning is the poster boy refuting the argument that a QB’s greatness is measured by rings. He had ZERO to do with the broncos winning that game joining dilfer vs NY, Rothlisberger vs Seattle and many others. DEFENSE and Special teams win championships. Just ask adam viniatari .

  38. I will say this, the NBA will try and outdo the Peyton going out with a ring story by rigging the playoffs even more than usual for lebron to win a title in Cleveland I guarantee it

  39. Elway may want to make another run at getting fellow Stanford alum Andrew Luck. He first tried in 2011 by pressing Fox to start Tebow in an attempt to tank for draft position.

  40. Contrary to an earlier comment, not all people in Denver want him to retire. That’s because the problems on offense aren’t related to noodle arm – anyone who’s seen a complete pass knows this. His problem in the Super Bowl was the lamest playcalling I’ve ever seen. Prior to that, his top WR (DT) got the big bucks and stopped catching passes.

It’s not necessarily how much more money does this guy need, it’s investing what you have so you don’t keep giving it all to Uncle Sam every year.

  42. All of these fans of teams talking about going after Andrew Luck after all of you called him overrated all season long. So why do you want your team to pursue such an overrated qb like you all have proclaimed? By the way Luck isn’t going anywhere no matter how much you wish

  43. They can’t pay him that much money. They can’t rely on Os-weiner to be the next guy, so I think Elway will sign a free agent who has some experience in Kubiak’s system or a system like Kubiak’s and then kick the tires on a few rookie QB’s.

THEIR SUCCESS WAS NOT BECAUSE OF ELWAY, IT WAS BECAUSE OF MANNING GOOD OR BAD!
    ————————-

A couple of years ago, they got to the Super Bowl because of Manning.

This year, they got there despite Manning.

They would have been 8-8 at best without that defense.

    ————————–

    Because they are fickle.

  46. It’s too bad Peyton didn’t learn an example from a class act in 2005, Jerome Bettis, and just retire when he and his team have achieved all they could on the gridiron. To me, his hesitance reminds me of all those over-the-hill pro athletes who, despite an obvious fall-off in skills, still didn’t know when to hang ’em up and move on.

  47. “Elway tiptoes around the question, like Brady tiptoes around the TRUTH”

Brady was the only person who testified under oath…don’t let the FACTS get in the way of a good old public slandering though.

Why can’t they count on Osweiler?

  49. Peyton is coyly letting Elway and Kubiak squirm. It would be nice if he would wait until the deadline and wait some more. Then you will see the nice guy costume Elway is wearing fall to the wayside. It won’t likely take that long though.

  50. Peyton retires – and continues on as the new spokesman for Budweiser, after already getting off to a jump start on it this past weekend.

  51. Peyton won’t return to Denver. He didn’t like playing in the Kubiak’s offense, and he didn’t like paycut from Elway. He still could be effective in his own offense when receviers don’t drop the ball and o-line is average at least. Denver o-line this year was below average, look no further then this SB – 5 sacks for a QB with a quick release, are you kidding me? Part of me wants him to return for a year and prove doubters wrong once again, though retirement is more likely.

    🙂

  53. Elway knows QBs better than most, which isn’t always the case when ex-players get into the front office. Elway is different. Brock Osweiler was heavily underrated coming out of college. He was good enough to be the number one pick in an average draft. Elway stole him. Osweiler hasn’t even come close to scratching the surface of what he’s capable of doing. Elway knows that too. Peyton still has a lot to offer, if he still wants to play. He’s one of the greatest of all time. But he won’t beat out Osweiler next year, so he’ll be playing in a different city if he plays.

  54. And then there is Brock Osweiler….if Denver keeps Peyton, what happens to Osweiler? (And Pats will have similar issue soon with Brady keeping…what about Jimmy Garapolo?) Ahhhh…the conundrum that perennial Supe Contenders have to deal with… But that’s the NFL–right place, right time.

  55. Jimmy Garoppolo at this time has more physical abilities than Brady. Stronger arm and mobility but a QB position in the NFL is more than that. That’s why Brady is still starting because of his intangibles. Brady can read defenses, he is a better leader, has mental toughness, and makes better decisions. That’s why he is still the starter. Newsflash, if Osweiler was that good, he wouldn’t have lost his starting job.

  56. The two(2) incentives that were met by Manning were “Unlikely To Be Earned” and thus the additional 4 million would NOT go against the Cap.

  57. Peyton is done.. He didn’t do much in the play-off. Denver defense carried the team. It would be a wise decision for Peyton to retire and continue his NFL career in different position.
