Mike Tolbert hopes he gets a chance to return to Panthers

Mike Tolbert did something in the Super Bowl he hadn’t done with the Panthers — lost a fumble.

And he hopes he gets a chance to make up for it.

The veteran fullback, who is about to become an unrestricted free agent, said he wanted a chance to return to the Panthers next season.

“Do I want to be? Yeah. Do they want me is the question,” Tolbert said, via Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer. “I can’t sign a contract by myself. It remains to be seen.”

Tolbert has done plenty of good things for the Panthers since arriving in 2012. And he had always taken good care of the ball, with his last fumble in 2011 when he was with the Chargers. But he bobbled it twice in the Super Bowl, recovering one of them.

The 30-year-old Tolbert said he thinks he still has four or five seasons left “at a high All-Pro level.”

And while his are the kind of contributions that are hard to quantify, he’s been a big part of the Panthers offense since arriving. He can run in short yardage, block, and is a good receiver out of the backfield in addition to playing special teams. He’s made two Pro Bowls in his four seasons with the Panthers, and had four touchdowns this year.

  1. Tolbert is one of my favorite players to watch. 5’9 250 lbs and pretty quick. Unique body/speed combo. Super bowl was disappointing but i hope he signs a new deal with the Panthers.

  2. ^^^former bears besides Clausen?? Clausen was drafted by Carolina in ’10 and then WENT to the bears…

Also the only old Bears players currently on the roster are Tillman and Allen… It’s nit like they have five guys running around out there.

  3. Clausen was a draft pick by the Panthers. One of three QBs taken in that draft along with Pike out of Cinci and Armanti Edwards from App State. He went TO the Bears. They did pick up Peanut Tillman though.

Either way, Tolbert’s a Carolina guy and, Superbowl aside, he’s played really well for the Panthers. Keep him, hopefully on a true home town discount.

  4. If the Panthers keeps him under contract the way he holds onto the ball, he’s in trouble

  5. lol NO Mike Tolbert can’t run block or pass block Panthers need a real true RUN blocking FB ,NOW if the panthers want to resign him as a RB & replace there #2 Fossy Whittaker that would be ok

  6. Seahawks and Panthers are one of the few teams who still use a fullback. Either would be good fits for Tolbert.

  7. They should bring him back. They have two more years before Short hits UFA. If they can restructure Johnson and lock up Norman that’ll leave plenty of space to bring Tolbert back. Gentleman and Rivera have turned the Panthers into consistent contenders.
