Source: Washington, Cousins haven’t broken off talks

AP

Washington and the agent representing quarterback Kirk Cousins have broken off contract negotiations. Unless they haven’t.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that the two sides have not stopped talking, contrary to an ESPN report that talks have ended.

The source was adamant, and it’s unclear why someone would leak that the talks had stopped when they haven’t. From the team’s perspective, leaking that talks were broken off when in fact they weren’t would amount to a show of force aimed at creating the impression that the organization will walk if it needs to — or that it will apply the franchise tag if it chooses to. From the player’s persecutive, leaking that the team broke off talks would let other teams know that Cousins could be available (perhaps generating offers that would pressure Washington to offer more). Also, it would potentially generate support from fans, the media, and teammates for Washington to put more on the table.

The team apparently believes that Cousins wants to stay. Other teams apparently believe it, too. To get other teams to drive up the market, other teams have to believe that their offers would be something more than leverage aimed at getting Washington to sweeten the deal.

None of this means Cousins will definitely remain with Washington.  Plenty of players want to stay put; when their teams try to take unfair advantage of that desire to not change teams, the only option becomes changing teams, especially if hard feelings emerge. (And they possibly will.)

For now, it’s too early to know whether Cousins will re-sign or leave. It’s definitely too early to break off talks. And that hasn’t happened, yet.

  1. Still too far apart that a deal won’t happen all that soon and deciding to take a breather for the night or a day or so = break in talks…….not broke.

  2. Cousins can’t leave. Washington will either re-sign or put the franchise tag on him. He is simply the best and most consistent option for Washington at QB next year. It would be foolish to let him walk without at least seeing if he can replicate last year.

  3. I’d offer him 5 years, $70 mil at most. If he turns that down, then I’d explore a trade for someone like Foles or Kaepernick. Maybe draft a guy in the 2nd round (Hackenberg, Cook). Or maybe think about signing Bradford. Cousins is just not worth $20 million

  4. One reason the Fan’s of DC Redskins should be excited that Captain Kirk is different then all the previous “Star” QB’s and players that make a ton of money but dont even come close to being worth it on the field is that Danny Boy is not swooning all over him, taking him and his wife to dinner spending $3grand and inviting Movie star “Redskins Fan’s” to meet him and play golf( Captain America Kirk Cousins loves golf btw) just to get him to think about signing a monster record breaking deal!!

Heck even last offseason Danny was the fanboy that decided to pay the bum and bad joke of a starting qb rgTURD $17million option for 2016 and wanted him to be named starter in may( RGTurd could not even keep from screwing that up with his attitude and bone head mistakes and play).

“Captain America” Kirk Cousins is a very very smart man with an IQ above genius, He will get paid but will make sure he studies, prepares, learns, trains and develops more than any other player in DC SPORTS! unlike the bum rgTURD that somehow still thinks he is the best QB in all of the world!!!

Kirk will make all these Haters Hate him even more when he develops into a TOP 3 QB!

    #CaptainAmerica #KirkCousins8 #HTTR #DCHero #RGTURD #HatersHateWhatsGreat #WarriorsOfDC

  5. They did. Unless, they didn’t. It’s broken. Unless it isn’t. They have…Unless they haven’t. It’s permed, unless it’s straight. It stinks, unless it doesn’t…Jeebus….

  6. The Racial Slurs will eventually overpay this game manager who’s still yet to beat a team with a winning record. Write that down.

  7. Franchise him (maybe 2-3 mil more than RG3’s contract would have been), and let him prove himself again. Team has a lot of cap space and don’t plan to be major players in free agency, besides smaller yet (hopefully) crucial upgrades. Build through the draft and see if Cousins is bout that life next year then give him a big contract.

  8. Can I just say that I love the fact people keep talking trash about Snyder when he has been hands off for quite awhile now. Dan Snyder invested $803 million into a team and wanted to have a say in it. There is no crime in that and all of you would have done the same! Hell, I look at comments here that are the same, you just have no control over a team. “Sign and play RG3” for instance!

Give this guy some credit. He stepped aside, brought in football people, and this team has nothing but upside!

Side note: Snyder can’t win in some people’s eyes because on one hand “He spends too much,” and then when the Skins are conservative it’s “Why isn’t Snyder willing to spend?”

Cousins is junk and dan snyder is the bum collecting the junk.

    ——————————————

Cousins set almost every franchise record in Redskins history last year. Time will tell but I wouldn’t consider that junk..

  10. Very Interesting. Obviously Dan Snyder prefers to keep RG3. While Gruden and McCloughan want Cousins. And would both be forced to bolt camp if Snyder prevailed and let Cousins walk. While keeping RG3 around at 16 mil next season. So let’s look at this objectively. Let’s throw out the middle 2 seasons where both QBs stunk up the joint because they cancel one another out. No benefit for either QB. RG3 lit up the NFL his rookie year. Leading his team into the playoffs. And winning a playoff game. he looked like an even better potential star than the transcendent QBs that Cam Newton and Russell Wilson became. Major injuries along with a glib/flippant tongue and me 1st attitude took him down with Shanahan. And Gruden hated his guts when he walked in the door. That’s why he sent Cousins to understudy under his brother last offseason. To give him a head start in his Offense over RG3.

Kirk Cousins had a dreadful middle two years while sitting on the bench his rookie year. His play was reminiscent of Matt Shaub in Houston. But after getting off to a rocky start in 2015. He righted his ship and finished strong to lead his team into the playoffs.

So all you really have to compare is RG3’s 1st year. And Cousin’s 4th. And that is Snyder’s dilemma. There is huge interest all over the NFL for RG3. Because most of those GM’s and coaches think he is a far superior prospect and talent than Cousin’s when healthy. And they feel he is now humbled, hungry and thirsting for a restart somewhere else. The Market for Cousins is narrower than most people think. Because he is view by the same GM’s and coaches as just a “Game Manager” on a scale with Brian Hoyer or Josh McCown. While Gruden views him as similar to Andy Dalton. Snyder is terrified that the Rams, Houston, Denver, Arizona, Jets, Bears, Cleveland, Miami, or even Dallas are prepared to Bid RG3 up and grab him as soon as they release him. And most of all he fears that several of those teams, like Houston, LA Rams, Denver, Jets, Arizona and Dallas could vault into the perennial Super Bowl picture if an angry RG3 returns to form (where he is wanted) and exceeds his rookie year performance.

This is a much tougher call than pundits and social media realize for Snyder and Allen. Just imagine what they would think about Gruden and McCloughan if RG3 took the LA Rams to the SB in 2016-2017. With all of those draft choices they fleeced off the Redskins. While Cousins and Gruden regressed against a resurgent Dallas and Giants. Nothing that happens in Washington would surprise me.

  11. BUT, RGIII will bring multiple Super Bowls to the Redskins! Where are you at logical? For years your have trolled other teams forums with guarantees and prognostications of greatness. You like rg3 are all hype. Nothing going but wishes and feelings of delusional greatness. You will poke your head out during the off-season like you never have spewed the hot dumpster fire garbage that have left your lips before. You like RG3 are figments of your own imaginations and reality is what you hide from. That’s the logical truth. Bet dollars to doughnuts your on suicide watch. Httr loser

  12. personaly im sick and tired of the media flip flopping on this. first the REDSKINS are gonna sign cousins, then their gonna franchise him, then there gonna tag him, then the talks are off, now their back on! PICK A SIDE and stick with it. i think every time the media changes its tune like this, the nfl should be able to fine them a certain ammount. frankly as a analyst like my self its a little dificult to keep up with all this

  13. I’m not a Washington fan but by chance I’ve been to 3 games the Washington lost with Cousins starting (all road games for Washington). I have no rooting interest for Cousins or Washington. I think Dan Snyder is an obnoxious person and an awful owner for the Washington.

But, look at what Cousins did last year. He had a good year, better than I or most other people probably expected. In his first year as a full-time starter, he led his team to the playoffs. Washington did not have any stars on offense and doesn’t play in a dome, Cousins threw for almost 4,200 yards, with 29 TD, 11 INT, 69.8% completion rate, and 7.7 yards per passing attempt. Those are very good results, actually better than Rodgers’ or Roethlisberger’s.

Maybe it was a one shot flukey year, but why wouldn’t it be an indication that after 3 not so good years as a backup, Cousins improved and thrived when chosen as a full-time starter? Lots of players show progress after a few years in the NFL when they finally get the chance to be full-time starters.

I wouldn’t tag Cousins if I was Washington’s GM because I don’t think Cousins is the #3 QB in the NFL. Tagged players are paid the average of the top 5 salaries, which effectively means the tagged player is being valued as the #3 at his position (average of 1-5 is 3).

The salary cap for 2016 is expected to be about $155 million. Good but not great QBs generally get paid about 10%-12% of the salary cap. That would be $15.5-$18.6mm.

If Washington doesn’t, I think some team will probably offer Cousins a deal for 4 or 5 years at more than $15 million per year with more than half guaranteed.

  14. I love being Native American and watching liberals squirm as they try to avoid the word Redskins, which, by the way, doesn’t offend a VAST majority of us in the slightest….but keep up the cute crusade. 😉 This cracks me up so much!!!!

  15. If they get him for 10-12M a year its a good deal. If they go above 15M a year I think they overpaid for what amounts to a half season of remarkable play, against really bad teams. Its possible he goes on to become a top 5 QB, but he hasnt shown that ability yet, week after week, against winning teams.

    ___________________________________________

And Bradford is worth 20 million? I’m an Eagles fan and I would take Cousins at 20 million over Bradford, but the reality is, Cousins won’t get that much and definitely will come cheaper than Bradford who has been in the league longer and has never accomplished as much as Cousins 1st time of ever starting the whole year. I’m not saying Cousins is a stud. He could be, or this could be a fluke, but if I were the Redskins, I would definitely take a chance on him. I am sure they can work out a contract that they could get out of it early with minimum cap hit if they needed too. The Eagles do it all the time. The Eagles can’t possibly be the only team in the NFL that knows how to work contracts. I hope they don’t sign him though, and the Eagles snatch him up. I would definitely take him over Bradford and everyone else out there right now.

  17. I think Cousins would like to play for the Bears. I heard him indicate that at church. I can’t mention the Churches name or my post will get deleted. He lived in the suburbs until his family moved to Michigan when he was 13 and grew up a Bears fan I believe. Kirk seems to have a very strong Christian faith, but doesn’t flaunt it like some others. I’m going to pick apart your encyclopedia analysis.

“RG3 lit up the NFL his rookie year. Leading his team into the playoffs. And winning a playoff game. he looked like an even better potential star than the transcendent QBs that Cam Newton and Russell Wilson became.”

First, he did NOT win a playoff game. He lost to the Seahawks. And many people realized after that game that he was damaged goods.

“There is huge interest all over the NFL for RG3.”

Not really. There are maybe…MAYBE 5 teams that will kick his tires, based purely on his name. And of those 5 teams, only 2 or 3 view him as someone who could start for them for an entire season.

“The Market for Cousins is narrower than most people think. Because he is view by the same GM’s and coaches as just a “Game Manager” on a scale with Brian Hoyer or Josh McCown.”

The market for Cousins will be enormous, based off of his ability to execute the WCO, which is the most run offense in the NFL. And noone employed by any NFL team views him as a “Game Manager”. That is something that uneducated fans that don’t understand how the WCO works came up with.

“Just imagine what they would think about Gruden and McCloughan if RG3 took the LA Rams to the SB in 2016-2017. With all of those draft choices they fleeced off the Redskins. While Cousins and Gruden regressed against a resurgent Dallas and Giants. ”

And, just imagine if Cousins leads the Redskins to the Super Bowl and RG3 winds up playing in Canada within 2 seasons? See how I did that? Basically, you are banking on Dallas playing over their heads with an aging and injury prone QB in Romo, and NY doing something they haven’t done since going to their last Super Bowl, which is be relevant, under a new head coach. Tell you what. I like my scenario which has one of the smartest football minds making decisions for the Redskins, versus you who had to walk very far out on a brittle limb to make your analysis.

  19. The reason why Snyder and Allen dispise Kirk Cousin, Shanahan told them that RG3 would never make it to a contract year. Shanahan ran an offense that utilized RG3 talent.Snyder as well as RG3 did not want to run that offense. They believed he was Aaron Rodgers, a dropback QB. Why do you think they drafted Cousins? After RG3 first successful season Snyder and Allen leaked it to the press that Shanahan did not want RG3 when drafted. They have drafted offensive lineman and signed free agents and their running game has gone from 5.2-4.8 with Shanahan to 4.1-3.7 with the new coaches. Snyder and Allen are complete jokes. Great job on dumping Wade Phillips as well.

Alot of what you are saying has some merit to it. However, it was not Allen that wanted RG3, it was Snyder, and ONLY Snyder. And that is why Shanahan drafted Kirk later in that same draft.

You kind of lost us, though, when you started to cite the running game issues. The big problem there came from the fact that we just implemented a new running system and are still putting pieces in place on the O Line.

Also, I am not sure how we “dumped” Wade Phillips when he was never employed by us?

  21. I like Cousins, but he is not a $20 million qb, at least not yet. He’s had more bad games than good. They should tag him. He gets a nice payday for a year, and has a chance to prove it wasn’t a fluke and potentially earn an even bigger payday, and it would give the team more data to work with.

  22. Is Cousins really worth what it would cost to tag him? I’m not entirely sure he is. I don’t think he’s a ‘franchise’ QB. He’s more of a temporary fix.

I’m not banking on anything other than Washington’s continuing ineptitude. Which you are banking on has ended. I believe the real fluke was Washington’s progress against weak and injury depleted teams in 2015. And they will be smashed back into reality in 2016. I much prefer my scenario over your “brittle pretzel”. Huge market for Cousins? Where is it?! Name just one team that has expressed interest in him other than the Redskins. Name just one pundit leak of a team. It’s all been about teams posturing and playing stealth with the Skins over RG3. Them thar is the facts my man. I much prefer my analysis over yours. And I would bet the ranch that it ends up reality over yours. Time will tell.

  24. Redskins have a history of signing bad free agents. I think they reviewed tape from this season. In the Nfl you have to defeat teams with an above 500 schedule in order to succeed Good move skins. let him walk

  25. Dream scenario……Robert Griffin III gets released, signs with Rams and the Rams win the Super Bowl.
