Romo to have surgery, type of procedure to be determined

AP

Tony Romo has made a decision regarding the future of his thrice-broken collarbone. But another decision still needs to be made.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Romo has decided to have surgery. It’s expected to happen within the next two weeks.

He has not yet decided on the type of surgery. The options are the Mumford procedure or the attachment of a plate to the bone. As explained by the Dallas Morning News, the Mumford procedure entails a shaving off or removal of a portion of the distal clavicle.

Either way, the goal is to help ensure that the bone won’t break a fourth time.

Romo fractured the left collarbone in 2010 and two more times in 2015. He also has had two back procedures during his career, prompting concerns within the organization regarding his overall football longevity.

  1. For an injury-prone guy in the twilight of his career, you figure he would have nipped that surgery in the bud a week or two after he broke it the second time.

    But, what do I know?

  2. Please retire you non playoff winning mediocre old man. People say he’s a competitor but he’s just simply holding his team hostage as broken down choking QB who either is hurt or does something stupid to lose games that matter.

move on to fantasy sports events and golf tourney’s already.

Always gets rated better than flacco but has NONE of the success that Joe does.

  3. 20 years from now, he won’t be able to golf.

Walk away with less pain than you will have if you keep playing.

He’s rated higher than Flacco because he is simply a better QB. Maybe you want to check out the historical difference between the Ravens and Cowboys defense to help you understand a little bit better buddy. Tell me how many top 10 defenses he’s played with over his 12 year career and get back to me.

  5. Jerry if you have any sense, draft a QB with your #4 pick. Otherwise it could be another deja vu for Cowboys this year.

Jerry being Jerry would sign Manziel and bring the circus to his team. Being Circus is what Jerry probably things is what winning a superbowl means.

And we can play that little game in reverse with offense line and wide receivers. Flacco has never had a receiver anywhere near as good as Dez Bryant and his protection has ranged from OK to terrible his whole career.
Go check the Ravens defensive rankings when the Ravens won the SB or the surrounding years. Bottom half of the bottom half of the league. But nice try.

  7. Geezuz, guy’s played 12 years and got beat up most every one of them.
If it was me, I’m outa there while I’m still in a couple of pieces.

  8. Super nice guy, talented, gritty and all the other intangibles.

Sadly injuries have caught up with him. If he is smart he will walk away before he physically can’t.

Jerry is all about the ticket and merchandising sales. More entertaining players mean more ratings and more sponsors. With profit sharing, teams don’t have to win to make massive profits. Even perennial losers such as the Bucs, Jags, Titans aren’t hurting.

  10. Things obviously haven’t gone as well as Romo and the Boys hoped. If they draft a QB at #4, look for this to be Romo’s last year. No one, even including Jerry Jones, is going to use a #4 draft pick on a guy that will not contribute anything for 3 years. And, no one, even including Jerry Jones, is stupid enough to place the fate of his team in the hands of Johnny Manziel. They would be better off with Tebow.

  11. “Romo to have surgery, type of procedure to be determined”

They need to word that better, sounded like a vasectomy was in the cards.

  12. Everyone outside DAL sees it would be in Tony’s best interests to think about life after football.

But as long as he’s their $100M man, shaving off a length of collarbone to decrease the chances of another breakage is a great idea.

  13. Is it just me, or doesn’t it make sense to have surgery as soon as possible after the injury to give as much time to heal as possible?

I mean this happened back in November. Think how much time he could of had to recover if something was done then.

  14. All of you clowns wanting Romo to walk away or retire or think the Cowboys are better off without him? How’d that work out last year? Why do they have the #4 overall pick. Be careful what you wish for, fools.

And NOT a Cowboys fan here.

  15. The problem with breaks of the collarbone, even with surg, is that they easily break again. It’s one of those bad, chronic injuries like patellar tendon tears.

  16. Not a Doctor but reading on line med info/ journal indicates that the
primary reason for the Mumford procedure is to relieve pain not
to reduce the chance of further injury. The info suggests bones spurs,
overuse ( describe as weightlifter’s shoulder) and arthritis as the primary reasons individuals undergo the procedure.
Is this an indication of potential problems? If so …looks like the Cowboys are picking a QB.

  17. Right after the season, Romo decided to have surgery. A few weeks later, he’s not so sure and wants another opinion. Now at the end of February, he thinking about surgery again. Right now the ‘Boys are Romo dependent. They need him to have a good season. The longer he waits to have surgery, the less chance he’s ready for the preseason and/or the season. Make a decision already and stick to that decision!

Right now the ‘Boys need an established QB capable of starting, someone like RGIII, to back up Romo just in case he’s not ready to start the season. No Cowboy fan wants a repeat of last year.

  18. They will change the name on the back of his jersey to Brittle. Maybe Jerry could get with the other owners and persuade them to let Romo play with a red jersey on . I mean Jerry has made the NFL and the other owners a lot of money by pushing the Rams to LA , it might work. The King of California would agree with him, he owes him one.
