The top free agent on the board may sign a new contract before free agency starts.

The Broncos are pushing for a long-term contract extension for pass rusher Von Miller and are optimistic that a deal will get done, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

There are no details on what kind of financial terms a long-term deal would have, but Miller will certainly be looking for something that makes him one of the highest-paid players in the NFL. After capping a strong 2015 season with an MVP-winning performance in the Super Bowl, it’s hard to argue against that kind of deal.

Rapoport notes that if the Broncos can get a deal done with Miller, it would open the possibility of using the franchise tag on quarterback Brock Osweiler. But it’s also possible that the Broncos could use the franchise tag on defensive lineman Malik Jackson. The Broncos have a lot of work to do in free agency, but the highest priority is getting a deal with Miller done.
