The 49ers will add former NFL quarterback Kevin O’Connell to their offensive staff, FootballScoop.com reported Friday.

O’Connell served as the quarterbacks coach with the Browns last season, his first full-time NFL coaching job.

Chip Kelly previously hired Ryan Day as the 49ers quarterbacks coach. O’Connell’s exact role with the 49ers has not been announced, but NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported O’Connell is working for the 49ers this week at the NFL Scouting Combine.

The Browns hired O’Connell last February, but his official hiring was delayed because he wanted to fulfill his commitment to training Marcus Mariota as he prepared for the draft. O’Connell worked with Johnny Manziel before the 2014 draft and then coached him last season with the Browns.

O’Connell, 30, was a third-round pick of the Patriots in 2008 and spent time with four other teams during his five-year career as a backup quarterback.

  1. Curtis Modkins was a token hiring as OC to get the race issue off Chip Kelly’s back. That is why the team is hiring these “special offensive assistants”. Modkins will just stand on the sideline with a clipboard in his hand for show.

  2. Ryan Day??? Never heard of him so did a search. Came up as a snooker player. Had to do some digging to find he is an ex-QB who played for Kelly in New Hampshire.

  3. I will give him a pass on Johnny Football, that guy has a few screws loose. Mariota seems to be looking good so maybe this is not a bad hire as an assistant offensive coach.

  4. Belichick rarely gets ripped for misses in the draft, but if this guy is a coach at 30, with a few years under his belt, this was surely a bad 3rd round pick.

Seems like the 3rd round is pretty hard for Belichick. Taylor Price, WR, 3rd round in 2010. 3 receptions for 41 yards in the 2 years he was there, played in 4 games and then released.
