Robert Nkemdiche really complicated Laremy Tunsil’s next few months

Early Friday afternoon, Ole Miss offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil’s biggest problem was some criticism he was getting from not running a 40-yard dash at the Scouting Combine.

But by the time teammate Robert Nkemdiche was finished talking, Tunsil had plenty more questions to answer.

As Nkemdiche explained that he was only “drunk” and not under the influence of marijuana when he fell out of a fourth-story hotel window, he casually mentioned that “Laremy” was there. Of course, Nkemdiche was arrested for possession of marijuana, which he denied using.

And so a guy who likely is under consideration for the top pick in the draft got dragged into more layers of questions about what happened in that Atlanta hotel room.

“There were more people in my room,” Nkemdiche said. “The hotel was under my name. Nobody wanted to take the fall. It had to go under my name. It just happened to play out like that.”

The sheer hilariousness of Nkemdiche being unable to find a Cris Carter-style fall guy for the weed or the window aside, Tunsil now has some explaining to do.

Asked Thursday about his Ole Miss teammate, Tunsil offered a favorable review.

“A lot of people don’t know about Rob, man,” Tunsil said. “He’s a great guy, a humble guy. He had a little few off-the-field incidents, but you know, . . . you have little hiccups.”

Of course, if you’re drunk enough to fall out of a fourth-floor window, hiccups are probably to be expected.

Tunsil had his own issues at Ole Miss, stemming from NCAA investigation into improper benefits. But he hadn’t been publicly linked to any substance abuse issues, at least until his teammate threw him headlong under that particular bus.

Now, every time Tunsil goes into an interview with a team at the combine or on private visits, he’s going to be asked if it was his weed that did or did not cause Nkemdiche to defenestrate himself.

Thanks, Rob.

  1. cant believe he dry snitched on dude…smh poor poor teammate right there, no one wants a guy like this around

  2. So basically Nkemdeche is a loose cannon with no filter and substance usage issues. That’s EXACTLY the kind of kid I want to invest millions of dollars in.

  3. So Gronk can go on a booze cruise and be a hero but these guys are criminals and not worth drafting high? Makes sense to me. And by makes sense I mean – is stupid.

  4. Somehow I doubt allegations of improper NCAA benefits are going to turn off any team from any player.

  5. Nothing like casually tossing a guy under a bus without thinking first. I wouldn’t be on the lookout for a Christmas Card from Tunsils, if I were him.

@billyball19 – How DARE they besmirch the good name!

  6. Not only do coaches and GMs not trust Nkemdeche now his future teammates will never trust him. With all the quality D linemen in this draft why would you even think about drafting him at this point

  7. “snitched”??

And if Nkemdiche tries to cover for Tunsil and doesn’t mention him and the others that were there do, would that have been better for who? Tunsil? Nkemdiche?

  8. I think it’s possible that Jack Conklin passes both Tunsil and Stanley in the draft. Certainly if it was me picking, Conklin would be the guy. Jack is not only the toughest and smartest of the three, he may well prove to be the best athlete as well.

    Both of them…

Makes it look like Nkemdiche can keep his mouth shut and keeps Tunsil out from under the microscope. Instead, this guy has managed to make both of them look worse.

Fake weed. It was synthetic. Don’t drag real weed into this mess.
    ——

This is an important point! People on weed are unlikely to fall out of windows because they’re too busy waiting at the door for the pizza guy. Synthetic weed has the street name spice, and it’s not very nice.

I’m not sure snitching out a teammate makes you look better to anyone except the media, who gain story text from it. It just makes future potential teammates wary of having you as a teammate.

  11. You’d think after going through being arrested for domestic violence for protecting his mother (and cleared) and an NCAA investigation into inappropriate benefits (and cleared) that Tunsil would opt to keep himself out of situations like this. He has too much at stake. That is what I would be asking as a team about to invest millions of dollars into the player.

  12. BREAKING NEWS: Laremy Tunsil will not be running due to injury suffered in freak bus accident.

  13. Sounds like one hell of a party! Did Tom Hanks bring a donkey?

“Defenestration is the act of throwing someone or something out of a window.”

  14. Heh. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn every NFL team already knew Tunsil smoked and already didn’t care.

  15. He should have never mentioned anyone else’s name. Too late to save himself (narrative is set on the situation). Should have just taken the heat and tried to move on and turn the page.

  16. If this young man was interviewing for a real job at a high profile company they would say ” Thanks, we will get back to you” and throw his folder away.

  17. He said Tunsil was there….in addition to OTHER people. He didnt say the weed, or fake weed, was Tunsil’s, he just said it wasnt his. Do any of you people know how to read? If the weed wasnt his (assuming he’s telling the truth) the why in the world should he take ownership of it???? The dude is trying to get drafted.

As for Tunsil all he has to say is “I was there….I dont know whose weed it was”. Simple; he isnt under any bus.

  18. Nice. What a DB. This is one of those guys who is always coddled, never takes responsibility for his own actions. Typical “it wasn’t me” guy. Always someone else’s fault. I’ve know many of this same guy over the years. I don’t know what happened that night, but I do know that I wouldn’t want Nkendichi as a teammate, or as a member of my organization. Man up and take responsibility.

I must say that Tunsil, at least publicly is taking this very well. I personally would be pissed if someone tried to throw me under the bus like that. Look Rob, it was your party. You were there. We all know that you weren’t some innocent bystander. Accept the repercussions and move on.

  19. How do we know they weren’t performing an exorcism?
Robert’s window flying adventures weren’t some selfish weed issue, it was a selfless sacrifice to save his teammates from the weed demon.

  20. I’m sorry but this shows that Tunsil was at a party where there was alcohol and pot. It doesn’t show that he uses. I don’t think this affects anything.

  21. Ole miss went from doormat to a bunch of top pics, reminds me of north Carolina a few years ago. Should be an NCAA investigation soon. The sec is so crooked

  22. If scouts have any legit questions for Tunsil, it will be strictly about injuries. Terrell Owens said a lot of stupid things about his teammates too, but none of it stuck. People who are smart just consider the source.

  23. This kid and Jonathan Martin could be great teammates. GMs are stoked to draft a kid that will put blame on others in a half a heartbeat. Yep, should be great in the locker room.

  24. The LT from Ohio State can make Tumsil look like a rag doll any day of the week and no, I am not a buckeye fan. In SMH at the kids coming in these days. What’s even sadder? Every NFL GM buys into this crap That’s the real reason they have to keep raising the cap to” accommodate ” these half talented misfits. In the real world a quarter of them would be on public assistance just to out food in their mouth.

    _____________

And if multiple sources confirm Tunsil was there despite Nkemdiche’s “not snitching” it looks bad for them both anyway…the only win in the situation was not to be there in the first place…there is no “snitching” at this point…assume that when news sources will pay big $$$ for elevator vidoes, the stories will come out.

  27. Somebody tried to compare Gronk to these guys. Here’s the difference. Gronk has proven he can play. These guys have not

  28. I have to side with the people who say Nkdemiche is a scumbag. I have taken the fall for people and people have take the fall for me. He is the idiot that fell out the window, he drew attention to himself. I now work with people like this and they are the lowest form of scum on the planet. It’s all about them and they will do anything to save their own ass. The team that drafts this guy deserves to loose 16 games.

  29. Gronk should never even be brought up in a conversation such as this. He may go hard when it comes to partying, but he more than holds his own on the field. He’s done it year in and year out, he’s smart with his money, he stays out of trouble. Anyone putting him down is just plain jealous.

  30. Surprised we haven’t heard of a fight after the press conference. Rob killed T’s shot at going top.
Rob you just fell out of the 1st. Bad enough you messed up but to bring your teammates into the mess was a bad call. Says you can’t be trusted.
