Injury ends Combine early for Cardale Jones

Former Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones pulled up with an injury during his second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine Saturday.

Jones told NFL Network on-field reporter Kim Jones he’s done for the day due to the injury and won’t throw in the on-field workout set for later this afternoon. That’s obviously disappointing for Cardale Jones, who never lost a college game as a starter and helped Ohio State win the 2014 national championship but was benched last season.

Earlier Saturday, Ohio State coach Urban Meyer predicted on NFL Network that Jones would “kill it today” and said he’d been told by NFL people in Indianapolis that Jones was “going to move up in the draft today.”

Jones measured 6-foot-5, 253 pounds at the Combine. Though the biggest questions he probably has to answer for NFL decision makers involve his maturity and ability to process the game from the pocket, there’s a pretty good chance he would have impressed during the Combine workout with his arm strength and physical gifts. His unofficial time on his first 40-yard dash was 4.83, and it’s probably worth wondering why a quarterback would need to run it a second time.

Ohio State’s pro day is March 11, a little less than two weeks from now. It will probably be the best attended pro day by NFL coaches and general managers on the circuit, so Jones will try to get healthy enough to work out then. He’s been training with quarterback coach George Whitfield and former Michigan State quarterback Connor Cook in San Diego.
