Report: Peyton Manning will retire

AP

The Sheriff has left the building.

Woody Paige of the Denver Post, citing a pair of unnamed sources, reports that Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning will retire.

Manning is expected to make the announcement late in the coming week.

But while Manning won’t be returning to the Broncos, Paige’s report doesn’t slam the door on Manning playing elsewhere, merely saying it’s “implausible” he would choose to play one more year with another team. Manning would need to be released by the Broncos to do that, a request the Broncos surely would grant if Manning were to make it.

Manning leaves Denver with his second Super Bowl win, which capped arguably the most bizarre season of his career. Banged up and misplaced in first-year coach Gary Kubiak’s offense, Manning limped away after a November 15 home loss to the Chiefs amid not-so-quiet whispers that he’d overstayed his NFL welcome. Then, relegated to backup status for the first time in his NFL career, Manning came off the bench to help secure a Week 17 win over the Chargers, helping the Broncos secure the No. 1 seed (a loss would have put them at No. 5) and setting the stage for close postseason wins at home over the Steelers and Patriots followed by a convincing victory over the Panthers in a game the Denver defense dominated.

The move is no surprise; Manning wasn’t going to be playing for the Broncos in 2016. The only question was whether he’d leave voluntarily or be cut.

Whenever he calls it quits, the five-year wait for Canton will begin. If the debate over Brett Favre’s candidacy took only six seconds, Manning should require half that, or less.

Heck, they should just waive the waiting period and put him in now.

  1. Congrats Peyton Manning for a fantastic career.

You will always be known for your professionalism, and not to mention your fantastic Quarterback play.

Going out on top was just the icing on the cake.

The Torch has now been passed to Teddy Bridgewater.

Except he is winning more than two rings with this stellar Minnesota Vikings team.

Best Defense in the League & Coach.

  2. I hate this guy for the times he somehow beat my Ravens.

But man; I love this guy for the skill he showed at QB. I wouldn’t love the NFL anywhere near as much as I do if it wasn’t for him.

  3. As a Chargers fan I have mad respect for Peyton’s game in the regular season. I’m happy for him that he was able to get that second ring.

I do think he is in the top 10 of all QB’s. Here is my list:

    1) Montana
    2) Brady
    3) Elway
    4) Farve
    5) Marino
    6) Manning
    7) Bradshaw
    8) Unitas
    9) Young
    10) Roethlisberger

    8) Unitas
    9) Young
    10) Roethlisberger

    1) Otto Graham

    Played 10 years….. Went to 10 Championships……… Won 7 (seven) Rings

No one else has been that dominant.

  5. Finally. That last SB win saved him as an alltime great ( even though his defense bailed him out) great player but Brady will go down as the best of this generation.

Not a bad list. Personally I would put Manning ahead of Farve and behind Unitas but yeah…no doubt he is top 10.

  7. kwjsb…but there were only like 4 teams in the NFL then…kind of diminishes Otto’s dominance.

  8. No, they should not waive the waiting period. That would be unfair to folks to had to wait forever (read: Stabler) or are still not in h=yet and deserve it (many players and coaches but Don Coryell is at the top of my list here).

  9. Top ten QBs of all time:

    1) Tom Brady
    2) Drew Bledsoe
    3) Joe Montana
    4) Kurt Warner
    5) Jake Delhomme
    6) Otto Graham
    7) Johnny Unitas
    8) Dan Marino
    9) John Elway
    10) Karen Fraudgers

  10. YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anything for the media to quit worshipping him as he does everything possible to lose the superbowl.
Who is going to become the new NFL media darling? I suspect Carr.

  11. 1) Montana
    2) Brady
    3) Elway
    4) Farve
    5) Marino
    6) Manning
    7) Bradshaw
    Unitas
    9) Young
    10) Roethlisberger

I got Aikman and Warner over Big Ben. Other than that, not bad.

  12. If he does retire, good riddance as far as I’m concerned. I’m disgusted at the double standard between him and Brady where Brady is treated like some liar and cheater despite no evidence to support that. People just get force-fed the anti-Patriot agenda from Goodell.

But Peyton is treated like some conquering hero, despite being exposed as an HGH cheater, a phony and a fraud and a diva and a bully who holds grudges. To me, Peyton looks far worse than Brady. But the anti-Patriot agenda of ESPN and others holds too much sway. Too many Jet fans at ESPN and too many people that hate the Patriots elsewhere just want to take them down for ‘something’.

  13. Todays media.

unnamed source who must be close to the situation of the source from the NFLs source that is not to be named.

    Manning will retire.

The magic 8 ball in the back room just told me, thats the only real source.

  14. Imagine him joining nance and Simms in the booth. At least they would shut up cause they would just be standing there watching his every move and crying

  15. I’d take him over Brady any day of the week if we’re just picking qb’s. Take away Bellichick and I don’t know you’re thinking the same of Brady as most do. Bellichick still won 10+ games without Brady.

Shocker, coming from a homer. boohooohooo. Deflategate, spygate, tuckgate, snowplowgate….the Pats have been cheating for decades….but its the mean commish and jealous fans. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

wow, that whole Favre thing was totally uncalled for… Like Manning, will go first time, but a how disrespectful!

Mike has always been Anti-Favre. Helped his friend Ari Flescher back in 2008 when he was hired by the Packers to orchestrate a smear campaign against Favre. He hasn’t stopped taking shots against him whenever he can since.

  18. By far the most overrated QB in NFL history.
9 one and done postseason appearances, just a media darling to no end.
Eli had 2 rings by his 8th season, Brady 3 rings by year 4 took Peyton 19 seasons thank god the Broncos had the top defense last year.
    Overrated to no end. 🙂

  19. Great career…won’t miss the commercials though, overexposed.
I have seen this man since he was diapers…hard to believe he has gone full circle now. Thanks for all you accomplished in the game.
Hope to see you spending more time in New Orleans.

    _________

It started way before that… most Minnesota Viking fans have a disdain for him, and now Rodgers, its pretty easy to spot…

Kudos to Manning on a great career, I feel he is going to dip out similar to Carroll and USC before it hits the fan… whether he did or didn’t do those things or the degree of it… its isn’t going away easily.

  21. Retiring would be the smartest thing he has done since the Super Bowl.
It’s really a no brainer, I think so anyway.
    Congrats on the HOF career.

How about breaking his phone! Does he ALWAYS break his phone before he gets a new one? I have yet to hear 1 single Pats fan say he breaks his phone all the time! Not even Brady said anything to that effect. So until then he will be labeled a Liar & a Cheater! Get over it and face reality.

As for Manning and HGH…. If he did take it, it sure didn’t do him any good this season did it?

This is a thread about Manning’s retirement, in case you can’t read. He was a great player and is deserving of the discussion.

Also, not quite a shocker when a Steeler fan feels the need to bash Tom Brady–all he does is beat your overhyped team like a drum every year.

  25. Greatest indoor QB of all time, can’t compare him with QBs that played most of their games in the elements. Manning played in a controlled environment for about half of the time, except for his time in Denver.

  26. Glad I got to see you play in person, PFM. One more item crossed off my bucket list! Thank you for coming to Denver and good luck to you. See you at Papa John’s!

  27. A sure fire first ballot hall of famer, multiple super bowl winner from a good family…..and there’s nothing Shaun King or Stephen A Smith can do about it.

  28. greatest people in NFL history:
    1. Snarnechia..Pats film guy
    2. McDaniels…Pats film coordinator
    3. “The Deflator”…Pats football techician
    4. Belicheck…Coordinator for above mentioned

    ———————————————————
Show a little intelligence before you post crap like that.

In 1950, the NFL had 13 teams.

Think about that. Think about how many lesser-skilled players are in the league NOW, filling spots on NINTEEN more teams; guys who wouldn’t have been good enough to make those 13 squads back then.

The saying in sports is that there is a finite number of talented athletes, regardless of how many teams are in any given league, and after that number, the talent is diluted further and further.

There were fewer baseball teams in the Fifties, and fewer pitching spots available. If there were 12 teams, with 10 pitchers each, that’s 120 pitchers in the majors, total. The best 120 pitchers got those spots.

If today there are 30 teams with 10 spots open, there are 300 pitchers in the big leagues, 180 more than back then. A big league slugger today is facing far less talented pitching.

The same holds true in football. Otto Graham actually faced far better talent in his day, than Peyton Manning does today, overall.

  30. Peyton Manning is hands down the most overrated quarterback in NFL history. He threw 3 touchdowns to 5 interceptions in those four super bowl appearances with an average super bowl passer-rating of 77.4. His career super bowl performances brought down his average career passer-rating in the NFL with it being 96.5. He recorded a total quarterback rating of 24.4 against Seattle and a total quarterback rating of 9.9 against the Panthers. He now holds the record for the lowest QBR for a quarterback on a super bowl winning team in NFL history.

Peyton still has the most playoff losses for a quarterback in NFL history with 13 and he won his first ring throwing 3 touchdowns to 7 interceptions in three of the biggest games for the 2006 Colts. He threw a total of four pick-sixes in his post-season career with two of those against the Saints and Seahawks in super bowl games. Two super bowl teams being led by Peyton Manning have lost those two super bowl games by a combine total of 49 points. Records are great but championships last forever. Montana and Brady are better quarterbacks in the biggest games.

It’s pretty safe to say that you’ve never played organized sports in your life. Other variables take place for a guy to have a good, great, poor or horrible game. Maybe the game plan wasn’t great. Maybe the defenders that picked off manning made great reads. Maybe the d coordinator came up with the perfect plan. Sometimes even when the greats get to another level, other things happen to interfere with the end results. Give the guy credit. He is one of the greats.

People keep bringing up superbowl stars. Guess what.. they dont matter. He has two rings. Eat that

    —————————————————

There are lots of players who have two rings and have been just as ineffective as Manning in the super bowl.
    Are they all GOATs?

  33. So sick of hearing about what a class act [Peyton Manning] is. I punked that guy when he was in college at [Tennessee]. In 20-whateve, my buddies and I went to [Memphis, TN?] to watch our [Pick a useless Division II team] play his [Vols]. After the game, we were hanging out at a bar when this clown showed up, started acting like he owned the place, and said he was going to “whoop on everyone” in our group for not giving him “respect”. Him being whatever height & lbs. and me 6’6″ 250 lbs. I confronted him and changed his attitude very quickly. I’m just glad my friend deleted the video before he sent it to anybody, out it on social media… “:^)>
