Darren Sharper reaches new plea deal

After a judge rejected a plea bargain that would have put former NFL safety Darren Sharper behind bars for nine years for drugging and raping nine women in four different states, Sharper and prosecutors have struck a new deal.

Via Brent Schrotenboer of USA Today, the terms of the revised agreement weren’t disclosed. Obviously, it calls for more than nine years. The new agreement also surely requires Sharper to cooperate in the prosecution of two co-defendants, since the last agreement contained that term.

A hearing will be held March 17 on the new agreement, with trial for co-defendants Brandon Licciardi and Erik Nunez due to begin May 16. The judge could still reject the new deal, in the same way the judge rejected the prior deal.

Sharper played for the Packers, Vikings, and Saints. He allegedly committed rapes in California, Nevada, Arizona, and Louisiana following his retirement; at the time of some of the incidents, however, he was working for the league as an analyst on NFL Network.
