Ravens won’t pick up 2016 option on Chris Canty’s contract

The Ravens added to their salary cap room Thursday by releasing linebacker Daryl Smith and declining to exercise their option on defensive lineman Chris Canty’s contract.

According to multiple reports, the team has informed Canty of that decision. Canty was set to make $2.15 million in salary and bonuses in 2016 and the Ravens will get the same amount of cap space back as a result of moving on.

Canty ended last season on injured reserve with a torn pectoral and missed four games earlier in the season with a calf injury. He had 19 tackles and a sack in the nine starts he did make and was a key part of the team’s run defense.

Canty turned 33 in November and told us on PFT Live last month that he planned to return for a 12th NFL season in 2016. Assuming that remains the case in the wake of his departure from Baltimore, Canty should find a home as part of a defensive line rotation at some point this offseason.
