Condon: Broncos will “have to make a move” before March 8

AP

Six days ago, the Denver Post cited two sources in support of a report that quarterback Peyton Manning would announce his retirement this week. Regardless of when the week ends, time is getting short for the Post to be anything other that inaccurate.

It’s possible there’s no retirement coming next week either, even though Manning’s $19 million base salary for 2016 becomes guaranteed on March 9.

“There’s a time when the contract becomes guaranteed, so they’ll just have to make a move before then,” agent Tom Condon told Dan Sileo of The Mighty 1090 in San Diego on Friday. “He’s completely aware of the guarantee obligation from the club on a date certain, and he knows that there has to be some accommodation prior to that.”

It’s looking more and more like the accommodation will be a release of Peyton Manning, not a retirement. In part because Manning still hasn’t decided whether he wants to play in 2016.

“I couldn’t answer that accurately,” Condon said of whether Manning will retire. “I know better than to ask him. I understand that when he makes up his mind as to what he wants to do, he’s gonna let me know. But as of now, he wanted to take his time and be patient with the decision and make sure that he is sure. . . . Let’s face it, he loves it. He loves being the locker room, he loves working out and of course the interaction with his teammates, and he loves the game.”

If he doesn’t retire, would Manning play for a team like the Rams or another team?

“I couldn’t say,” Condon said. “Obviously anybody who’s going to make a move or is contemplating making a move like that is taking into consideration all the different football factors, and of course as meticulous in his preparation as he is about virtually everything you’d have to assume that he’s considering all of the football factors and I’d guess less about the business.”

From a business standpoint, it remains better for Manning to be a free agent than to land on Denver’s reserve/retired list. That way, he can return to the NFL whenever he wants, without having to engineer a release from the Broncos later. By doing nothing over the next few days, Manning will engineer his release sooner.

  1. Manning is playing it smart…force the Broncos to cut him, work the back channels to see if there is any interest, then make a decision after he has all the relevant info…

  2. The idea that Condon is in the dark is utterly ridiculous…he knows exactly what is going on and is probably helping to orchestrate it…the public is that stupid….

  3. Why would he let the Broncos off the hook for $19 million for nothing? He’s gonna make them cut him so he’ll be in control of his situation. There’s no guarantee he’ll play if he stays, he doesn’t like the offense, and he’s not “the man”, so he just wants out of Denver.

  4. In other news, Jimmy Haslam, who has said for years he would like Manning to work for the Browns, today dumped the team’s president.

  5. Peyton got a pass when he didn’t make announcement at the SuperBowl. At this time, he knows if he wants to play or not. Simply make the decision.

As for what he should do, I am not sure any team wants to pay him 19MM to hand the ball off.

  6. As a Broncos fan, this bums me out. As a football fan, this bums me out. I’ve always felt he was more on lease from the Colts than anything, but I truly hope he has more respect for the opportunity given to him by Denver to win a Super Bowl than to force their hand here… He definitely benefitted from the adjustments the last couple years after getting worked by Seattle doing it the way he always had.

He could walk away a World Champ for his second team and with his dignity, or he can come back another year, get pummeled while playing for a non-playoff team and retire being mediocre at best at the end of a hall of fame career. Love of the game or not, the choice seems clear to me.

  7. Good luck to any team that pays 20 million for the privilege of having a QB audible to a run 90% of the time and throwing picks the other 5%.

  8. Biggest phony in all of sports. He’s known what hes going to do for multiple months. Anyone that thinks otherwise is naive.

  9. If he retires before March 9th, he retires as a Bronco. I’d bet there’s some importance to him to retiring as a Colt… Force the Broncos to release him, then sign a one-day Colts contract to retire with the team that drafted him.

Not really. Denver were never waiting on his decision. They wanted him to make a decision and are giving him time. They’ve clearly made Osweiler an offer. That wouldn’t have happened if they were thinkng about remotely keeping manning. Even if Os leaves, they won’t keep Manning. Guaranteed.

Wrong. Peyton never forgets a grudge and he reportedly was non too happy when Denver demanded he cut his salary. Further, he was pretty frosty when his foot got well enough to play, they sat him. Not retiring with Denver is Peyton’s payback for the above slights. He never forgets anything.

I get the impression though, that Condon and Manning are hoping Osweiler leaves and are attempting to strongarm the money out of Denver. That won’t happen. They’d rather go with Siemian, a draftee or a FA. The pickings are slim….but the QB play wasn’t amazing last year. They don’t need a Manning (prime) Brady or a Rodgers or a Brees. Fitzpatrick is probably the best FA QB available.

  13. Man I would love to see him stick around for one more year, go to the Browns, and just embarrass himself with 35 interceptions and a string of 0.0 QBR games. Taint that legacy, Megahead!

  14. if he comes back it will be with the Broncos for less money. He knows he needs that defense to have a chance at this point in his career. He’s not going to the Rams to get murdered in that division for 6 games. My guess They will restructure for 10 mil with incentives again.

  15. meanwhile the Broncos are busy typing up a statement saying that they have no intentions of releasing Mr Manning before March 8th………………..follow up report in 10, 9, 8, 7, potato, 5………

  16. With the many many comments I have read that Manning wants to play, none of them have specified the Broncos or a contender. He has just said, or alluded to, wanting to play. The best value to a team he could be might be the Browns. Every player, regardless of position, would benefit greatly.

  17. For them to say that Peyton doesn’t know what he wants to do is a bald faced lie. Its clear that another franchise has contacted him and convinced him to keep playing. He will force the Broncos to cut him and then he will play horribly for a few more years to pad his stats.

  18. I have a hunch he knows he’s ready to be done, but isn’t telling the public or the Broncos because he wants them to cut him so he can sign a 1 dayer with Indy and retire a Colt.

On another note, part of me wants wants to see both him and Brock Osweiler find their way out of Denver, only to have the media lose its mind on how they now have no quarterback. Then Elway comes in and tries to convince them that this was all part of his self-satisfying master plan and reminds them that he is the god-king of football and lesser creatures could never understand how complete and brilliant he is.

  19. Hey, where’d you get the photo of the Frankenstein monster giving the “thumbs up” sign?

No, but manning has always been selfish and greedy.

  21. “By doing nothing over the next few days, Manning will engineer his release sooner.”

In addition to gaining control over his destiny he also has 2.5M good reasons to do nothing, just as Elway has 2.5M good reasons to wait for the last minute.
Manning has never willingly left money on the table neither the article nor any of the previous posters seems to have taken that simple fact into account but you can bet PFM and Condon have

  22. When Manning comes to the line, reads the defensive alignment, calls out signals or changes the play to something he knows has a good chance of working, it puts pressure on the defense, and everyone says he is a well-prepared craftsman at work.

When he comes to the table, reads the contractual possibilities for himself, Os, and the Broncos, and signals to the press that he is still deciding, it puts pressure on the Broncos, and everyone says he is a greedy, vindictive SOB.

    Both statements cannot be true…

  23. Uh, the Broncos don’t fear losing him to free agency, duh. They and everyone else in the football world has seen over the last two years what he has to offer a team. Of course, the Broncos will ride it out to the end, ultimately cutting ties, allowing Manning to play for whoever wants him. He’s a stallion no more.

  24. A running clock ticking down until his $ is locked would be a good item to have on the site………Kind of like the Ball dropping in NY on New Years……..

  25. As in, the Broncos aren’t afraid of Manning going to a division rival because the Broncos know, unequivocally, that they have a defense that would destroy Manning.

  26. Uh, do we really think the Recruits like Talib, Ware, Ward, E Sanders, Welker, etc came to play for Elway w Osweiler at QB. The Broncos were largely created because 18 gave them a chance for the Super Bowl every year. No, did not play great this year, but Manning still was a leader and played a large part. Good luck to the Broncos and Mr. Ed moving forward.

  27. Have watched every one of Peyton’s games iver the past few years I can say he is done. He has no business playing anymore. If people want to say he’s been injured that’s fine but he’s always injured and even when healthy in the playoffs he wasn’t any better. I get it though. It’s hard to walk away. Plus why walk away if someone is willing to pay u millions to do what u love. If he plays though it won’t be pretty

  28. The Chiefs effectively retired him when they held him to just 35 yards on 5-of-20 passing, zero touchdowns, four interceptions. Stacked the box with 9 defenders to play the run and defend the pass because he cant complete a pass longer than 5yds without giving himself a hernia.

  29. Here’s the kicker: Denver already offered Malik, Brock contracts with money that they don’t have unless Peyton retires or gets cut. They reportedly offered Brock 40 mil over 3 years. And Malik around 12 m per year. The Broncos aren’t handcuffed here. They’re simply ignoring the fact that manning hasn’t made a decision because they’ve made the decision for him.

  30. After watching the circus that resulted in him signing with the Broncos, do you really think that he’ll go sign with Cleveland? This guy knows exactly what he wants and exactly how to get it. His goal after leaving the Colts was to find a situation that would lead to a championship. Mission accomplished. Nothing left to prove and no place to go. My bet is he’s taken his last snap in the NFL.

  31. Peyton Manning made his decision the moment Brady did his new contract. And Kirk Cousins became the second highest paid QB in the NFL. HE IS PLAYING SOMEWHERE ELSE. Not in Denver. But somewhere. IF I was betting, I’d say Condon is burning up the back channel lines in Houston and Miami to gage interest. But the dude has zero interest in retiring. Or he sure wouldn’t be sweating out Elway and the Broncos like this. Especially after they rescued him from Irsay’s chop block. And helped him win his second and last Super Bowl.

  32. I guess old manning forgot getting booed off the field by Broncos fans during the payoffs. That is all that is left for him anywhere he goes.

  33. Good grief, if the guy wants to play another year, who the hell cares? And if he does, getting the release gives him the most flexibility and allows the Broncos cap room and the ability to move on. Apparently the only people hurt are those all uptight about the guy’s legacy, which is easily remedied by watching another game and lightening up.

  34. Are these comments full of Pats fans who have lost the last 3 AFCGs to Peyton Manning? Oh, and 2 Super Bowls to his baby brother…

  35. Manning didn’t look all that done when he outscored Brady in the AFCC game 2 to 1 in TDs. I am still bitter about losing that game. Manning shut down our Deflategate revenge tour. Aghhh.

  36. Why would he let the Broncos off the hook for $19 million for nothing? He’s gonna make them cut him so he’ll be in control of his situation. There’s no guarantee he’ll play if he stays, he doesn’t like the offense, and he’s not “the man”, so he just wants out of Denver.

The reason is that his 19 million comes off the books if the Broncos cut him before the 9th. It becomes guaranteed after that. Elway structured the contract perfect to be for 4 yrs, then they can cut him with very little dead money.

  37. To the posters thinking no one will want to play in Denver you are crazy.

Manning was a big draw but now the NFL world see’s Elway as a winner. Someone who knows what he is doing.

Also Denver and Colo Springs just got rated two of the best places to live and raise a family. Things like that matter along with the money.

Great stadium, great fans, winning tradition, great city, and a front office that is good to the players. Who wouldn’t want to play in Denver!

  38. Imagine they mess up the paperwork. For some reason miss the deadline.

He gets all the cash no matter what.

Don’t know why the Broncos don’t push this through right now to avoid any costly administrative errors.

  39. It’s better for the Broncos if Manning plays. That means some team like the Texans, Browns, Rams can’t go after Brock Osswieler. Surly a couple teams planning on drafting a QB high in the draft so they are out as well. Elway will get everything he wants. He’s patient.

  40. One thing that’s really being overlooked is the fact that Manning wasn’t a good fit in Gary Kubiak’s offense. I think Manning can be effective with a team willing to run his offense, as long as he can stay healthy of course

  41. Big head is gonna make it harder to get rid of him once and for all than it was for Farve to finally leave. His game has eroded. Just leave already. Your not getting another sympathy Lombardi. Teams cant keep carrying you.

  42. For these dumb colts fans that think hes going to indy to backup Luck you obviously dont know Peyton. His massive ego would never let him agree to be a backup. He will go to the rams or clevland for a ton of money and get obliterated on a regular basis until hes injured again.

  43. The Broncos aren’t going to be foolish. If he doesn’t retire before the deadline, they will cut him. He’s done being effective. Let some team desperate for attention and butts in the seats sign him. That famous picture of a bloodied and beaten Y.A. Tittle on his knees comes to mind.

  44. A play for attention. Selfish diva knows the time is not right to retire with these stories about sleazy Manning behavior front and center. He’ll string it out until the time is right for him to maximize the positive pub for himself.

  45. He’d be better of saying he wants to play now – that way the Broncos would release him and he’d have a wider field of teams. The longer he waits, the more likely other QB deals may be done in the meantime.

  46. Peyton Manning’s playing ability is a mere shell of once it was.
    Hes got nothing left
Just retire and milk Papa John’s.
Actually a crappy pizza compared to any Italian restaurant’s offering

  47. Isn’t there bonus money involved? I thought he got a sizable bonus and part of that might have to be paid back unless he is cut.

  48. Undoubtedly, at this point in time, like many, I have less respect for Peyton Manning as a person, but as a footballer, he is still one of the best. I’d like to see Big Bro challenge himself and put up a “Buy Me” flag, say to the Eagles (don’t think he’s be interested in playing for Cleveland), then watch the Eagles soar to the playoffs and beyond. That would give Sam Bradford a chance to sit and learn from a Hall of Famer, which Bradford has never in his NFL career up to this point.

  49. While the Post article might indeed be inaccurate, this guy’s call for the Pats to get their draft pick back is currently looking kind of insane.

  50. Maybe he just wants to move to OMAHA… either way, he’s a washed up QB, he’s proven that over the last season and a half. He was a passenger on the Denver Super Bowl train, not the engineer.

    ==========================
Not as absolute as binary math, binarymath. Both statements can be true when referring to different time frames, as is the case here.
Example one only puts pressure on defense if defense believes Manning is capable of executing, which is no longer the case. So now everyone says he is not a realist and is only concerned about exposure. And only a narcissist doesn’t differentiate between positive exposure and negative exposure.
Example two only puts pressure on the Broncos if Manning was still in fact an elite quarterback. He isn’t. So that makes him a vindictive, greedy, SOB. And a narcissist.

  52. Condon: Broncos will “have to make a move” before March 8”…gee, there’s a penetrating glance into the obvious…tired of the daily PM updates of will he or won’t he…couldn’t care less.

Meh, only losers care about that stuff. He outscored Brady and won the game. I would take that any day over some first down obscure stat.
