Broncos announce Peyton Manning’s retirement

AP

Peyton Manning is officially retired.

The Broncos announced this morning that Manning has informed the team he’s calling it a career. A ceremony in Denver is scheduled for Monday.

“When you look at everything Peyton has accomplished as a player and person, it’s easy to see how fortunate we’ve been to have him on our team,” Broncos General Manager John Elway said.” Peyton was everything that we thought he was and even more—not only for the football team but in the community. There’s no question that his work ethic is what made him into one of the great quarterbacks of all time. All the film study Peyton did and the process that he went through with game planning and understanding what the other teams did was second-to-none. Peyton was a player that guys wanted to play with. That made us better as a team, and I’m thrilled that we were able to win a championship in his final year. Peyton won a lot of awards and set a lot of records, but to me, what he helped our team accomplish during the last four years is what stands out the most. I’m very thankful Peyton chose to play for the Denver Broncos, and I congratulate him on his Hall of Fame career.”

Broncos coach Gary Kubiak thanked Manning for the one year they spent together, a year that ended with the Broncos winning Super Bowl 50.

“It was a blessing to coach Peyton Manning,” Kubiak said. “Nobody worked harder at the game and nobody prepared harder than Peyton. His preparation was the best I’ve ever seen with how he went about his business. There was nothing like his work habits. Each and every week, he did everything he could to get ready to play not only against the defense but even against the coordinator. After competing against Peyton many, many times, I already had great respect for him. But being with him this season, going through what we went through and accomplishing what we accomplished—that was special.”

And now a special career has ended.

  1. Congrats, Peyton. You went out on top, which is smart. You’ve had a helluva career, and you should now enjoy retirement the way you want to do it. Coaching, analyst, slinging pizza… whatever your heart fancies.

Just don’t pull a Favre, please. Thank you.

  2. Colts fans everywhere thank you for the memories. Before you arrived (with the exception of the Harbaugh miracle year), things were bleak.

  3. This guy was ok, way overrated though. Really phony personality, bad actor playing the corn-fed goober, good guy role but, people bought it all these years.

I’m sure he’ll eventually get his ticket to the HOF.

  4. I never was a Colts or Broncos fan, but he is a class act and I wish him well in his retirement. I rooted for him in the Super Bowl. Thank goodness we all aren’t labeled and judged by what foolish things we did when we were immature youths. Manning was, and is, a class act.

  5. Everything about Peyton’s Career has already been said…All we can Add is AMEN…..see you in the HOF !

  6. Always a sad moment when a great QB who you’ve followed for years retires. Big loss to the NFL but its good Peytons going off on a high.

    A great great QB

  7. Smart move BUT it would have been better if he announced it a week or two earlier, instead of dragging it out to the wire.

  9. Congrats to Peyton, heck of a career and is definetly on the Mount Rushmore of QB’s.

Took 2 different teams to 4 Super bowls with 4 seperate head coaches. He revolutionized the game and he WAS the system. Best of luck in retirement PM.

  10. The guy rewrote the offensive record books, and went out a champion. A few too many “one and dones” but 2 SB titles with two different teams isn’t too shabby at all.

Somewhere in the top 5 all time behind Montana and Brady.

  11. Smart move and well deserved, although I think he dragged it on a little too long.

Incidentally, does anyone remember that back in 1998, a debate raged on among so-called “draft experts” as to who was the better quarterback between Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf?

  12. Peyton, for all of the jokes we cracked about you, you were always a class act. Thanks for making the NFL enjoyable to watch, and Sunday afternoons will never be the same without you.

  13. Once he retires he can get all the HGH injections he wants.

He will be back in the super bowl in 2018.

Plus he needs to focus his efforts on defending abuse claims.

  14. He’s special in a throwing his wife under the bus, using HGH, sexual assault, stealing NFL records kinda way.

    That’s how he’s special.

  15. Congratulations Peyton! Thanks for years of great entertainment. You got pretty close to perfection.

  16. Within the sports world, he did good.
Still waiting for his contributions to our society. We keep putting people good with balls, up on pedestals, over-paying them, idolizing them, hanging on their every word.

Meanwhile, soldiers retire every month, anonymously, just like their careers, dedicated to protecting our society.

Meanwhile, teachers hit the trenches daily, working in anonymous, poor conditions for decades, then retire quietly without fanfare.

Without teachers, without soldiers, Mr. Manning wouldn’t be awash in dollars, accolades, glory, et al.

Our societal priorities are indeed, all screwed up.

No doubt lots of thumbs-down coming, but that’s okay.

  17. Congratulations to the greatest QB ever to do it from the months of September to December.

  18. Most one and dones in playoffs. Sexually assaults women and cheated with hgh. That will be his legacy top five QB but no where near the best

  19. It was a special 4 years and was an honor to have him play for the Broncos.
Any football fan who really appreciates the game has to be a little sad knowing we will never hear Omaha! again or see another Manning Brady game. It’s been a pleasure to watch one of the all time greats for 18 years. Good luck to Manning in whatever he decides to do next.

  20. Such an amazing NFL player that his head, hands and feet are 2 inches bigger than when he entered the league, due to all the knowledge he absorbed.

  21. Pats fan here, so obviously Peyton has been a pesky rival to my boys, but the day has come where I can just tip my cap to the man on a great career. I’ll always think Brady got the upper hand overall, but man did we have some epic battles with him. Post-2000s Pats fans aren’t used to fearing many players or teams, but Peyton was one of the select few that you knew could give you a game, and maybe take you out behind the woodshed if he got hot. This run the Pats and Brady have been on, I know I’ll never see anything like this again in my lifetime, and honestly, this whole thing wouldn’t have been anywhere near as fun without Peyton and the Colts and even the Broncos towards the end. We talked a lot of trash about him, his iffy postseason record, his goofy country yokel persona, his giant forehead, his “Manning-face” when things didn’t go as well as he planned…but all in all, we wouldn’t have done it if we didn’t ultimately respect the guy. Congrats on a first-ballot HOF career, Peyton. Put your feet up, you earned it.

And now everyone is looking forward to seeing Brock Osweiler as the starting QB for the Denver Broncos.

    – Rest of the AFC West

What would be even funnier is if Osweiler signed
    elsewhere. 🙂

  23. Most overrated quarterback in NFL history so many great QB’S far ahead of Mr 9 times one and done in the postseason.
    Good riddance. 🙂
Brady far superior, rings do not lie.

  24. Oh no! What will patriot fans have to whine about now? No more Manning articles will destroy their offseason of trolling.

  25. I can’t understand all the groundswell of emotion and sentiment that Peyton’s retirement has aroused. Announcers on radio are distraught that he is leaving the game, even though it was predictable. He was a very great player who played until he was nearly 40 and got extremely well paid.
All great players eventually hang up their cleats.

  26. I have been reading the posts on here, & I get what Manning may oray not have done in college was inappropriate, but come on guys, I know I have done some pretty messed up stuff as an immature 18 or 20 yr old…or 25 even. So I think as the years have passed he has shown, that he is NOT that guy from his youth. I have nothing but respect for the guy, he has earned it. Best Wishes to the Sherriff. Thank you for 4 years of joy….

  27. One of the best quarterbacks to ever play and an awesome fantasy QB. Even when he tossed multiple INT’s he would get you positive points. That is hard to do consistently in the fantasy realm.

  29. One of the greatest ever. As a Patriots fan, he always scared me and it was the greatest rivalry whenever he and Brady went at it. Who’s better? Who cares? They are right there with Unitas and Montana as greatest ever. It was a great run and he changed the modern quarterback position. “Omaha”…. Well done Peyton.

  30. Huge Brady fan here, but congrats to Peyton for several reasons:

    1. Made the right decision… didn’t try to milk another year out of a tired, old body;

    2. Seems to me to be a classy guy, who has always been well-liked by his teammates and coaches;

    3. Nice to see the MUTUAL respect he and Brady have for each other.

Seems like, IF he wanted it, he could be a hell of a great coach in college OR the NFL!

    Congrats on a great career!

I’m not a Manning fan or a Patriot hater, so I have no dog in this race really, but I did check the records:

Manning was 3-2 against the Pats in the play-offs, and 3-1 against the Pats in the AFC championship game.

Armstrong, Bonds, Manning. Sorry, fact not opinion.

How is manning on that list a fact? What facts do you have that nobody else knows about? I sure hope you’re not envolved in law of any sorts.

  33. It’s the only move he could make, really.

Retire, and go out with a Super Bowl win, and be remembered fir that instead of how bad he looked back in the fall

    or

Be remembered as a guy who was lucky to squeak out a Super Bowl win without contributing, and then was so bad that no other team wanted him when he couldn’t know when to hang ’em up.

  34. It was a pleasure to see greatness from both sides. As a Bronco fan, Peyton broke our hearts in the playoffs many times.

It was one of the more exciting, and fun times, when he came here to play. Anyone who says he was a complementary player this year, missed watching this team come together because of his professionalism, and team orientation.

Thank you 18. It was a career full of great moments.

So… By your logic Charles Haley is the greatest defensive player of all time?? 5 rings. “The don’t lie”.

  36. Congrats sir! Great career. As a Boston/NE fan, you are in a special place of great rivals we always respected and feared – with Derek Jeter, Magic Johnson, Guy LaFleur, etc.

Easily top 5-10 QB of all time and likely top 3-5 only behind likes of Montana, Brady…

  37. It get a little bit of a Green Bay/Farve feeling on this one. Might not have seen the end of him yet. But hopefully he will sign with CBS and take over the analyst seat from Simms.

  38. About about time. Wasn’t as classy as everyone thought (I feel so sorry for that poor trainer), more probable than not he took HGH, therefore a cheater. Still everyone recognizes him as a good football player. Thanks for all the memories. Will be second best of all time. Brady will always be GOAT.

  39. Great ride Sheriff! Home games over the last four years have included some incredible performances and provided memories that will last a lifetime for my family and friends. Say what you want Pats fans/PM haters, the guy can flat-out play the game of football and his epic games vs TB/Pats will be talked about and argued about for many years to come. The back and forth between Broncos and Pats fans is all in good fun but, us Bronco fans would lack a leg to stand on without the efforts of The Sheriff. On another note, I can’t remember witnessing a Pats win locally and do not expect to see one next year without PM:)

First of all, you are confusing skill, with “luck”.

Was it “luck” that Browner and Butler recognized a pick play at the goal line, and intercepted the pass to win the game?

Second, I don’t care how many you points you won a Super Bowl by; you WON A SUPER BOWL!!!!

Third, if you want to play that game, how many points did they LOSE each of those Giants SB’s by???

Throw your grapes in the trash, buddy, they’re SOUR. 😉

  41. He was something to watch in his prime.
But did he really have any other option than to retire? It’s pretty apparent no one wanted him for anything other than a back up role.

    ===================================

Peyton is 3 & 1 vs. both Tom Brady and the Pats in AFC Championship games.

So, with advancing to the Super Bowl on the line, he beat them 75% of the time.

And folks say Peyton is a great regular season QB only…

Tom did well against everyone other than Peyton in the playoffs…

Had Tom seen Peyton in a few more AFC Championship games, Tom would have fewer Super Bowl appearances and wins…

  48. It is rare to finish on top. Peyton Manning joins John Elway and Pete Sampras among others. All incredible champions. Perhaps PM had a change of heart after rumors indicated that he was not going to retire. His regular season performance was the best of all time. His playoff performance was somewhat under expectations although two rings is a great haul. Congratulations on a superb career!

The whole, “Manning sucks in the play-offs” thing has always been BS. Manning played on teams in Indy that, with the exception of the 2006 Bob Sanders D, didn’t have championship caliber defenses, and often, not even play-off caliber defenses. It was the offense that carried those teams into the play-offs every year.

Manning’s personal performance in the play-offs is about the same as Brady’s. His career play-off QBR is 87.4 – Brady’s is 88.0. Their INT rate is the same – 2.4. That includes the play-off stats from the last 2 years, in which Manning’s performances weren’t great, obviously. Before 2014, though,. Manning’s career play-off passing was better than Brady’s.

I don’t think the ring argument is a very good one, as someone else said, if that’s the argument, then Charles Haley is the GOAT. It’s a team sport. Brady fans like to point out the 4 rings, and at the same time point out that Peyton’s second ring was undeserved because he was carried by the defense. Well, the same is true of Brady’s rings. All four were very close games – two of them were won by Vinatieri’s leg, the other two were won with last second interceptions.

Brady performed well in those games, but all of them came down to four single plays made by the kicker or the defense. If Vinatieri misses -no rings. If Butler doesn’t snag that pass in the end zone – no ring. If the defense doesn’t hold Philly’s last drive, capped by that Harrison interception with 9 seconds – no ring.

It’s a team sport. Brady won 4 rings, but HE didn’t win them, his team won them – same with Manning and his rings. If Manning played for NE instead of Indy, he’d likely have 4 rings. If Brady played for Indy, he’d likely have 1 ring. The number of rings doesn’t make one player better than another – Haley wasn’t better than Reggie White and Bruce Smith, and Jim Plunkett wasn’t better than Dan Marino.

  50. I don’t care what ANY of the negative posts here say. I absolutely love Peyton Manning and I wish him well in his retirement. He will always be considered one of the greats, he is a legend, and no matter what no one can deny that he is the MOST intelligent QB to EVER play the game. I am thrilled that he was able to win one more ring before this day came. Good for you, Peyton!!!

  51. I will miss watching him play he may not have always had the best arm but he was by far the smartest guy to ever take a snap.

But Eli will win one more ring and hold the family record for rings

  52. @barrymichaels61 Brady is the best system-quarterback ever. Even Cassel was successful playing for Belichick. Let’s see him do it under another regime…especially one that doesn’t resort to cheating to succeed.

  53. Here come all the predictable usual suspect bobbleheads with comments on Brady that sound idiotic when it’s a thread about Manning’s well-deserved retirement…

System quarterback–dumbest one ever. Copy the system then, if it’s the most legendary winning system of the modern era…oh wait, you can’t because you don’t have a Tom Brady leading it. Whoops!

Only won the 4 Super Bowls by a few points each–yeah, historically, that’s what WINNERS do. They win close games, and Brady has won more of them than anybody. You think the losing team on the other side is chopped liver? It’s the SUPER BOWL, not pounding the crap out of the Bills in October or something.

The game is 60 minutes and not a lucky kick at the end. You get “lucky” enough times, and I’ll show you the better team. These chances usually go to the better players and teams that put them in that winnable position.

The fact that you can’t stand Brady so much only proves all of these points. He and the Pats dominate every thread and keep you knucleheads frustrated.

Good–there are a number of more years for you to whine about it coming up for you. They’re favorites yet AGAIN.

  54. He’said the GOAT, and it isn’t really close. I wish he were a Democrat so I can support him going forward, but I fear he’s retiring so he can emerge st a brokered convention to save the silly Republicans. That would be the only time I would ever vote against PFM winning anything.

  55. ikeclanton says:
    Mar 6, 2016 6:43 PM

Only won the 4 Super Bowls by a few points each–yeah, historically, that’s what WINNERS do. They win close games, and Brady has won more of them than anybody.

Well, I think the point of those types of comments is that Brady wasn’t the player that won those games for them. All of those games were out of his hands. They all came down to one final play, and he wasn’t even on the field for any of the decisive plays.

It would be different if he threw the winning TDs on the final plays of those games, then you could give him credit for winning those games – or if his offense outscored their opponents such that the game didn’t come down to the final play or didn’t have to be saved by the defense or a last second clutch FG, then you could say his play won the games for them – but that’s not what happened.

He was a good QB on good teams with a great coach, but none of those games were the classic game-winning drives that make the QB the hero. Now, it’s just enough that there was a QB and he’s automatically the hero, and because the game was a championship, that means he’s the best at his position.

because you don’t have a Tom Brady leading it.

Do you think Brady would have won four rings had he not played in NE? If not, then it’s not the QB, it’s the team (or more likely, the coach). Do you think Belichick would not have won four rings with another QB, say Manning or Brees?

NE went 11-5 with Matt Cassell when they lost Brady for ’07. When Brady returned in ’08, they went 10-6. Indy went 10-6 in ’10, and dropped to 2-14 when they lost Manning for ’11.

  57. Brady Vs. Peyton was always classic, must watch TV. Great career and it was fun watching while it lasted. Heard some funny stories about him while I was living in Knox.

One story was from a friend I knew who went to UT while Peyton was there. He was a big dude that worked as a bouncer at nights. He had to work late at the club he bounced at and caught a few winks, then was late for his early class. He was running to class, turned a corner, and slammed straight into Manning and they both fell. Manning’s entourage immediately were going to go after my friend, but Peyton stopped them and actually helped him up and picked up his books. Peyton shook his hand afterwards. A-not-interesting-story but it gave me a quiet admiration for him after I heard it. Favre was still better, haha.

  58. Here here to the last 2 posts! But you left off only QB to take multiple teams to multiple SBs, first to win SB for 2 teams (as starting QB) and my favorite, perfect QB ratings in playoff games. He is football’season Gretzky and Ruth; he is unquestionably the GOAT, and IT IS NOT CLOSE!

  59. The first QB to win a SB with more than one team…okay great…but let’s not get carried away. Do you really think he’s the reason the Broncos won the SB?!?!

  60. Wrong, Montana and Brady are a couple notches below. Dink and dunk QBs for most of their careers. I would take Manning first, then Montana, Farve, Marino, Brady, in that order.

  61. It is good see him going out while he is still at the top of the game. To many elite athletes try and hang on for too long and end up making themselves into a joke.

  62. What a Me Monster. Reciting his stats from his 4 years in Denver.

I like the dude but how self absorbed do you have to be to list your ‘accomplishments.’

How many shipments of HGH? How many moonings over your career?

Tom Brady will not list his #’ Pro Bowls or team records (as if they are only his) etc.

God Bless Football. What the heck is that?

  63. That is the GOAT, dangel. Live with it. He retired at 39 with all the records it took Farve playing until he was 42 to set. Brady will never touch his incredible accomplishments, or only will if he plays to 42. MEANINGLESS. Superbowls is a team stat. Sorry.but you couldn’t watch these two play and think Brady is in Manning’s league. Stop with the ridiculous criticisms, because Brady is much more ME than Manning. Facebook? Yikes, he does not get enough press? Model shots on Sunday Night football? What a silly, superficial guy.

  64. Wish I could have chimed in sooner (major computer problems) I was fortunate enough to see the retirement speech in it’s entirety on Monday and I have to say I am so glad I did. I was able to see history. Okay, for those of you who do not like Peyton Manning (why, I really don’t know or understand), but I’m not going to argue with you, I just want to say I absolutely loved that speech. He did it the right way. The way someone who truly loves and respects the game should go out. I don’t know if he will come back in some other capacity, but I hope so, because I for one am going to truly miss seeing him.

  65. Brady’s teams 4-2 in SB
    Manning’s teams 2-2 in SB

Brady only QB – team to come back from 10 down in 4th Q in SB.

Peyton has played like crap in both of his wins and losses.

    Brady 66% Comp Pct, 13 TD’s 4 INT Rate 95.3

    Manning 66% Com Pct 3 TD’s 5 INT Rate 77.4

    Brady 10 AFC Championship games
    Manning 5 AFC Championship games

Manning 9 one and done in playoffs.

Manning’s teams 3-2 over Brady’s teams in AFC Champ games. That’s your nugget.

    God Bless 2nd place.

Kissing Papa John and mentioning Budweiser…yea Peyton’s not superficial.

  66. Manning is 3-1 over Brady in the championship games. That’s right, in the only SB-type games these two ever played against one another, Manning has dominated. It’s so bad you Brady suckups even block it out of your memory, LOL! Your only “nugget” is to cite team stats like SB wins and denigrate individual stats. Guess what players get into the HOF based on their individual stats. It’s the only measuring stick, and Tommy can’t touch peyton! Yes, your boy is indeed superficial and Manning is major. Think of it as Manning is JFK while Brady is Dan Quail. That should resonate in New England!

  67. OK, Now that almost EVERYONE has made it perfectly clear on all of the stats, whether it be individual or team, can we now put this to rest? They are both phenomenal players, yes??? They both CLEARLY have a respect and admiration for one another, yes,??? I think that speaks volumes about both of them. I think it speaks volumes that Brady was one of the first people Manning called about his retirement (and also that he mentioned the Patriots specifically in his speech). No person is perfect. Please everyone try to remember that every time you post something that is just so utterly asinine for words. When I saw Manning’s speech last Monday I was speechless. It was eloquent and heartfelt and it came from a man who TRULY loves the game of football. REMEMBER THAT!

  68. Unlike Manning, Favre didn’t have to cheat to break all the passing records.
