Falcons showing interest in Travis Benjamin

After releasing Roddy White, the Falcons are looking to add another wide receiver. And it may be one who already knows the offense.

The Falcons are interested in free agent wide receiver Travis Benjamin, Vaughn McClure of ESPN reports.

Last month, it was reported that the Browns and Benjamin were getting close to a deal that would keep Benjamin in Cleveland. But with free agency starting tomorrow and no deal done, that no longer appears to be the case.

Benjamin played for Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan in 2014, so he’d already know the offense in Atlanta.

The 26-year-old Benjamin is coming off his best NFL season, with 68 catches for 966 yards and five touchdowns. He’s the No. 35 player in our Free Agent Hot 100.

  1. I think it’s a mistake if Cleveland lets him leave. The guy can’t be caught if he gets in the open field.

  2. If I was GM in the NFL, these are the types I’d be signing, they are still hungry for a big pay day rather than being lazy sitting on a 4 or 5 year contract that made them mega millions. You could turn over your roster every year with bargains like this and not pay guaranteed money into the future of someone who is just playing not to get hurt. Combine that with veterans who want a ring and you have a playoff team every year. What player wants to sit in a locker room with a guy who makes more in 1 week than you do in a year?

  3. I’m not a Brown’s fan, but it would probably be helpful in negotiations for the Browns to know if JGordon will be available to them before free agency. Even if they’re gonna try to trade him. The league has 60 days to decide. It’s been 48. I’m sure the league knows what they’re gonna do. Why punish the team? Unless they’ve already told the Browns, which I guess is possible.

Devin Hester is still in the league playing for the Browns?
I guess that’s why they are the Browns.

Hester is a Falcon. And “joedirte” is saying the Falcons would cut him if they sign Benjamin. I agree.

  5. You better get some players Atlanta. Offensive line sucks, tight ends average, running backs good and one great wide receiver. Your draft choices and free agents have been horrible for a while. Why did Quinn keep His GM? Too many mistakes Tommy. 8-8 was a good record with that talent on offense. 7th total offense with a center who started 16 games who was brought in as a guard and who never started a NFL game. He had 5 turnovers himself. Defense is just as bad as the offense, average talent at best but that’s why you were hired Dan, good luck. They will blame you in a year not your GM. They will fire you unless you make some key decisions because your staff you inherited have proven they can’t.

  6. I like Benjamin but he’s not worth the same as a guy like Marvin jones. Yes, Benjamin can return some punts but he’s very frail and does nothing to help the run game. I watched 16 games of 5 10, 160lb wide receivers trying to block and needless to say it didn’t go well. I’d rather have jones.

  7. I don’t want him to leave but if he does I hope he hits the jackpot. This guy deserves a big payday having come back strong from injury and working hard to become a very good WR.

  8. A decent receiver would be nice but the Falcons REALLY need linemen….. They could have 3 of the leagues best receivers but if the Qb is running for his life, they will never get the ball!

  9. Given that Benjamin only had 18 receptions in Shanahan’s offense, he’d be better off signing with any team except Atlanta.

  10. Bigger issue for the Falcons is to overpay him than it is for the Browns to let him go. There are a ton of Travis Benjamins out there every season. Just go after the fastest small receiver in the draft with the best hands. Everyone forgets the experts thought the Browns were dumb for bringing in so many small receivers until Josh Gordon got suspended and those small receivers like Benjamin and Hawkins were running circles around people once they actually got snaps.

  11. I’m not sure he’d want to head for the train wreck that is the Atlanta Falcons.

They last 3/4 of the season was an absolute disaster with no signs of improvement.

As Dan Quinn put his stamp on the team they started losing games hand over fist…
