The Panthers exceeded every expectation with their offense last season, so they want to make sure to keep the entire depth chart intact.

According to Jonathan Jones of the Charlotte Observer, the Panthers gave third-string quarterback Joe Webb a two-year deal to keep him off the market.

Webb hasn’t thrown a pass in two years with the Panthers, but they wanted to keep him because he’s versatile. He’s also a big part of their special teams, and can plug in as a receiver as needed, something few other quarterbacks can do.

They’ve made sure to insulate themselves at quarterback. Last September, they extended backup Derek Anderson’s deal, making sure they have a reliable Plan B (and now Plan C) behind league MVP Cam Newton.
