Steelers bring back veteran cornerback William Gay

AP

The Steelers need to do some work on their defense, but their first moves of the offseason are about hanging onto their own guys.

Agent Jerrold Colton just tweeted out word that cornerback William Gay had re-signed with the Steelers, though he didn’t mention any terms.

(If you’re signing the day before free agency, that either means you really wanted to stay or those terms aren’t very big.)

The 31-year-old Gay started all 16 games last season and held up well, though in a perfect world the Steelers would move him into a smaller role. But the fact they held onto also shows he’s a reliable commodity, and at a time when they need numbers in the secondary, it speaks to his contributions that they want to hang onto him.

The Steelers have also re-signed safety Robert Golden, their special teams captain.

  1. The team that wears the black and gold’s offseason has been a positive one. Not so for that team that wears the purple and black. Terrible contracts, more arrests, and suspensions for PED’s. Now they’re considering that player from the team that wears black and orange. He would fit right in with the team that wears the purple and black. The perfect player for that team. They will finish in fourth place, behind that team that wears the pumpkin helmets.

The team that wears the black and gold got swept by the team that wears the purple in black, in large part because the team that wears the black and gold has a defense that can’t even stop an offense as ineffective as the team that wears purple and black. Not really seeing how this move improves the odds of doing better than 1-5 in the last six games against said purple and black-wearing team.

  3. Every player the Steelers bring back is one more cog in the WHEEL of SWEEP. LOL

  4. A move that was going to happen. The steelers do it best, stay in house with your own, build through the draft and grab a free agent here and there. This is why their contenders every year.

  5. Our young friend who is obsessed with that quarterback from down south and also obsessed with that team that wears the black and gold swings and misses once more. It’s a bleak offseason for the team that wears the purple and black and will continue for the 2016 season.

  6. If someone told me Gay would be our best starting corner 3 years ago, I would have slapped them upside their head. Yet here we are.

So you’re saying I tried and failed again? So it’s almost like I suffered the indignity of being “swept” then?
Great offseason you have going though, seriously impressive what with the Gay signing and the Deangelo Williams critiques and the Tomlin tweeting him to stop ragging on Peyton Manning and whatnot. Really showing the rest of the NFL how it’s done these days.

  8. Love the signing. Willie stepped up in 2015. Might not be the best CB but he’s the best they got and plus he’s got the best dance moves on the team

  9. It’s a good move for both sides Gay struggled when he went to the Cardinals…. He is a slot CB but played alot of outside last year and looked good doing it only db in the league with zero tds scored on thats a starter…

Moves I would like to see is cut Cortez Allen, get Will Allen SS back on the cheap, make a run for Eric Weddle, draft a cb first round that fits, and pick up another cb boykin would be nice for slot work if they want to try Gay wide more predominantly. Adding those peice with Golson CB 2nd rounder from last year would fix alot of the problems

  10. Ignorant troll hate, gotta love it.

While admittedly there were weaker targets to pick on than Willie Gay in the Steelers secondary, Gay only gave up around 450 yards, zero touchdowns and opposing passers had a qb rating around 65 when throwing in his direction.

Throw in that he’s awesome in the locker room, a great civic leader as evidenced by his work against domestic violence, that he’s never missed a game, and he’s actually a great guy to have on your team. Steelers nation is very proud he’s a Steeler.

    Goo Steelers!

  11. Gay is aging like fine wine. He has literally played better every year since returning from Arizona. He played like a Bona Fide #1 corner last season, check the stats if you want. Plus, if I recall correctly, he has never missed a game yet due to injury in his NFL career. I could stand less dancing from him, but I’ll put up with it if he keeps scoring points and shutting down receivers. Solid, solid move.

  12. I love how this offseason is shaping up. Kevin has a plan.we are locked and loaded. The buzzards can sit back and let real men show them how to play the game of football.

  13. Big Play Willie Gay! is one of the most
    under-appreciated players in the NFL.
My fav stat – he has taken his last 5 INT’s to the house for TD’s.

Great team player and a key cog in that secondary.
I’m glad the Steelers got this done. Go get it Will!
