PFT's Mike Florio takes a deeper look into Olivier Vernon's deal with the Giants and its impact on the league.

The numbers are in for the contract given by the Giants to right-place-at-the-right-time defensive end Olivier Vernon. And, yes, it continues to be an amazing expenditure of funds by a General Manager who knows that if he doesn’t spend it now, he may not be around to spend it later.

Per a source with knowledge of the contract, Vernon receives a $20 million signing bonus, along with a fully guaranteed base salary of $1.75 million in 2016, a $7 million roster bonus due in four days, and $11.25 million in fully-guaranteed 2017 base salary. That’s $40 million in fully-guaranteed money at signing.

Another $12 million in 2018 base salary is guaranteed for injury only. It converts to fully guaranteed on the third day of the 2018 league year.

The contract also has $250,000 workout bonuses each year.

In all, the deal pays out $29 million in 2016, $41 million through 2017, $54 million through 2018, $69.5 million through 2019, and $85 million through 2020. The cap numbers are $13 million in 2016, $16 million in 2017, $17 million in 2018, $20 million in 2019, and $20 million in 2020.

As a practical matter, it’s a two-year, $41 million deal with a team-held option for each of the next three.
