Report: Chargers “team to beat” for Travis Benjamin

Wide receiver Travis Benjamin has drawn interest from a few different teams in the last couple of days and he’ll be able to sign with one of them as of 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

As of right now, the Chargers are reportedly in position to get his signature on a contract. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Chargers are the “team to beat” in the chase for Benjamin’s services with the official start of the new league year fast approaching.

There is more than enough time for another interested team — the Falcons and Texans have also reportedly shown interest — to make Benjamin move in another direction.

Benjamin, No. 35 on PFT’s list of the top free agents, is at the top of a thin group of wideouts in unrestricted free agency this season. That may not be great for teams looking for wideouts, as the Chargers are after Malcom Floyd’s retirement, but it will probably work out pretty well for Benjamin at some point on Wednesday afternoon.

  1. How sad is it when a team that is going nowhere in the standings and unsure where it will be playing in 2 years looks like an upgrade over your old team?

  2. He’d be a nice fit there, same as Atlanta. Paired up with either Keenan Allen or Julio Jones as a very capable number 2.

Or, he could drive down i75 and trade in the orange and brown for orange and black and be even better as the no 2 to AJ Green. A guy can dream…

  3. There are no front runners in the AFC. Rivers has just as good s shot as any other QB. It’s about Defense. As we’ve seen of late. I’ll take Potroast to shore up the D line.

  4. Looks like the exodus from Losertown, Ohio has begun. Say goodbye to Benjamin and possibly Mack and Schwartz too. It is understandable however, since a guy only has so many years in the NFL and playing on a pathetic team has to get old sooner or later.

Do you think T.J. Ward regrets being let go from the awesome football powerhouse in Cleveland? I’ll bet that Super Bowl ring he gets will ease the pain.

It is also rumored that Marvin Jones is leaving the Bengals to sign with the Chargers. Even the fact that he had Hue Jackson with him in Cincinnatti wasn’t enough to lure him to Cleveland.

Start getting yourselves ready for another bustout season Browns fans. Looks like 3 to 4 wins again this year.

  5. I hope this wasn’t a huge $$$ signing even though it is a nice move. I think he helps stretch the field. He now has a qb that will be in every game throwing to him. Still think they draft a WR early perhaps 2/3 rd. I think this team is trying to keep PR happy and stop the “is this PR last year chatter.”
