Report: Marvin Jones will sign with Lions

The Lions said farewell to wide receiver Calvin Johnson on Tuesday and they’ll reportedly welcome Marvin Jones to the team on Wednesday.

Dianna Marie Russini of ESPN reports that Jones will sign with the Lions when the new league year begins at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday afternoon. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the deal is expected to be in the neighborhood of $8 million per year.

Jones, No. 39 on PFT’s list of the top free agents, isn’t going to do the same things for the Lions that Johnson did over the years, although that kind of production is hardly something they could have hoped to find on the free agent market. Jones is coming off the best season of his career, however, and set career highs for both catches (65) and receiving yards (816) with the Bengals in 2015.

While Jones is poised to step into Detroit’s lineup alongside Golden Tate, the Bengals may need to find someone to slot in next to A.J. Green. Mohamed Sanu may also be heading elsewhere once free agency opens, which would leave Brandon Tate as the most experienced receiver on the roster after Green.

  1. Marvin won’t be what Calvin was when in ‘Megatron Mode’… but facts are that Calvin was hardly Megatron last season. Not even close.

    I like Calvin and he was fun to watch when at his best, but he wasn’t last season, or even chunks of the prior season.

    I believe Marvin actually will replace last seasons Calvin Johnson… maybe even better.

  2. The AFC North will continue to be owned by Pittsburgh!!! All these teams losing key players and Pitt remains the model of excellence !!!

  3. Solid signing. This will allow the Lions to avoid drafting a WR in the first two rounds and concentrate on OL, DL or LB, which is how it should always go.

  4. Marvin Jones and Golden Tate! The best one two punch since Calvin Johnson and Gokden Tate.

    Bob Quinn is a genius! I hear he’s wearing a cutoff hoodie around Allen Park today.

  5. Bevis, the steelers lose a wr per year and are doing just fine. Wallace, Ward, Sanders, etc. We’re not worried about losing MJones, although he was a nice player.

    Truth be told, I’m glad he’s found greener pastures. We’ll use the extra $, lock up Iloka, and draft a more-than-capable #2 in round 1. If not, I feel perfectly confident in AJ and Eifert stepping up even more.

  6. Just the same old trash bungaling up the trash. Bungals are about to return to the annual feeding fight with the clowns. Could happen to a more deserving city😁

    Best Detroit one two punch since a week ago.

  8. Love it. I would much rather have them sign Jones then roll the dice on a Rookie, especially with a 1st Rd Pick.

    No, Jones won’t really “replace Calvin” but he will definitely help. We just have to have realistic expectations here. They have been trying to “Replace Barry” since 1998, and they haven’t succeeded yet. Our expectations have been too high because of Barry and you can’t replace talent like that. You WILL NOT adequately replace a once in a generation, arguably top 5 of all time talent, but you can go out and find the best player possible and I think they did that for the most part.

  9. THE STONE COLD TRUTH: Marvin Jones will not total near 2015 Calvin Johnson’s 88 rec. – 1214 yards

  10. Sadly 8M per year is overpaying for this guy. You should be a real difference maker for 8M. Golden tate was much cheaper, so if he doesnt outproduce golden tate the seeds of discontent will have been sown. They will overpay because 2 factors drove it—- a weak crop of FA wr’s and the Lions having a dire need in the wake of Megatrons retirement.

  11. What’s wrong with this signing? Look at other guys making 8 mill. Eric decker, dwayne bowe, torrey smith, crabtree, garcon, cruz. No thanks.

    He’s 25, super athletic. He’s not small, he was high achieving academic guy at Cal, he’s not a character problem at all. What is not to like.

  12. Would have liked to see Marvin stay in stripes, but glad he’s out of the conference – solid player with room left to grow.

    As for the Steelers trolls – seriously? I know you’re probably bored, as you don’t have anyone sniffing around your free agents, but you should have something better to do.

  13. Jones is a solid WR and 8m might be a little high but not terrible in today`s market with a bad FA class and thin draft class. Too much for Cincy because AJ is making 15m and Eifert will be a FA next season but they drafted Jones in the 5th round with a pick obtained for trading Ocho Cinco and got good production then let him go and take the 3rd-4th round comp pick for him.It`s funny how the Steelers have done it for years and there fans thought it was great and when Cincy does it Steeler fans act like it`s dumb. A bunch of loud mouth hypocrites.

  14. Marvin jones is tall. Matt Stafford likes to throw the ball high. He won’t be megatron, but no one will. I think jones can have 10TDs playing with Stafford. Tate is going to be the workhorse, just like he was 2 years ago when Calvin was injured.

  15. they chose slightly overpaying a WR over grossly overpaying a DE or LB or OG/T;

    they brought in depth help at DB in place of overpaying Abdul-Quddus or the aging S he replaced;

    they did not overpay to keep two of their depth but not starter-level LBs;

    do i sense a pattern here?

    administratively, these are not the same old Lions;
