Titans sign Matt Cassel to back up Marcus Mariota

The game of backup quarterback musical chairs is happening fast, and chairs are going in a hurry.

According to Paul Kuharsky of ESPN.com, the Titans have signed veteran Matt Cassel to a one-year deal.

Cassel was unable to save the Cowboys from themselves last year, going 1-6 in his starts in relief of Tony Romo (and Brandon Weeden). He was eventually benched so they could play Kellen Moore, which should have been all the sign you needed.

With Matt Moore heading to visit the Cowboys, they were clearly looking for an upgrade.

Cassel slots in behind Marcus Mariota, though Zach Mettenberger remains on the roster there, giving them some experience as Mike Mularkey tries to rebuild things there. The fact they’ve never won a game with Mettenberger on the field may have led them in this direction.

  1. How many Matt QBs ARE there? Matt Flynn, Matt Cassel, Matt Shaub, Matt Hasselbeck. They just shuffle teams every year, and one of them can play.

Hasselbeck just retired so that’s one less. You forgot Matt Moore, though.

  3. Not glamorous, but I like this signing. The Titans have their starting QB in place, so there’s no chance for a “QB-by-committee” situation (which Cassel has found himself in the past few years… and always ends up like a dumpster fire).

Don’t let last year fool you, Cassel is one of the few experienced veteran backups on the market, and he’ll be good for Mariota on the practice field and in the locker room. If the Titans are serious about moving forward, they have to have a known quantity at backup QB, and Cassel is an upgrade over Mettenberger, etc., in my opinion.

    Zach is Denver bound!

You may be on to something here… This could set up a trade scenario where the Titans can get something for Mettenberger. I wouldn’t mind that at all.

  5. I’m convinced he has something he can use to blackmail everyone or something. What are teams seeing in him to keep him employed still??

  6. This is the Titans’ way of ensuring the offensive line protects Mariota at all costs …

He is sure getting a lot of mileage from that 11-5 Patriots season.

He had one good season at KC, and has been a disaster ever since.

  8. Cassel is done. He was TERRIBLE in DAL.

Why bother? He won’t win if Mariotta goes down.

Keep a young guy as a backup. At least he has potential, and can get reps if Mariotta is injured. He has as much of a chance of winning some relief games as Cassel.

Cassel is just a waste of time.

  9. I’m sorry I was a fan of Cassel’s and happy when Dallas signed him.
The problem is that his arm is gone. He cannot throw like he used to.
It’s a shame but he can no longer be effective. The Cowboys made a major mistake starting Cassel over Weeden. The Cowboys were upset
with Weeden after the Patriots game. At that time the Patriots were
heathy and rolling and the Cowboys were without Dez. Romo would have had a tough time without Dez.

  10. It is ridiculous how GMs continue to sign guys like Cassell. And the so called “Football Men” claim the fans no nothing about football…Well, we know enough to know Cassell stinks as an NFLQB. It’s as if the Titans’ GM did see Cassell’s performance last season in Dallas…Horrible signing!
