Brady’s numbers suggest a correction/protection deal

AP

The last time Patriots quarterback Tom Brady did a new contract, the salary cap was in the neighborhood of $120 million. It’s now north of $155 million.

The latest new contract signed by Brady in recent days has the look and feel of a correction, along with providing Brady some protection.

Our semi-educated guess regarding the contract was right; the contract has a large signing bonus ($28 million) and low base salaries over the next two years: $1 million in 2016 and $1 million in 2017.

The drop in the base salaries becomes huge for Brady, potentially. If he’s slapped with a four-game #Deflategate suspension in either of the next two years, he’ll lose only $235,941.17. Under his prior deal, he would have lost $2.11 million is suspended four games this year, and $2.35 million next year.

The cap savings are negligible. By trading in base salaries of $9 million and $10 million, respectively, the cap numbers drop from $15 million and $16 million to $14 million and $14 million, respectively. That’s a savings of $1 million this year and $2 million next year.

Also, there are no fully-guaranteed payments beyond the signing bonus. Brady’s base salaries for 2016 and 2017 are guaranteed for injury only. In 2018 and 2019, Brady has base salaries of $14 million and cap numbers of $22 million each year.

In all, it’s a four-year, $58 million contract with $28 million fully guaranteed. That may seem like a lot of money. Until realizing that Brock Osweiler signed a four-year, $72 million contract with $37 million fully-guaranteed on Wednesday.

  1. Classic Patriots strategy. Good stuff. Though it’s a punch in Goodell’s face, he and his stooges don’t care about the money. It’s all about keeping Brady off of the field so he can’t lead the Patriots into the playoffs again.

Because we all know most of the league can’t beat the Patriots and no one else can win that division as long as TB is leading that team.

Cue the pathetic, cringing, lying losers.

    Go Patriots!

  2. I can’t wait for this to be twisted into, “See! He must have done it! Now he’s trying to his his money!”

In actuality, if Don Yee is behind this, he’s just being a thorough agent/lawyer. The league has proved their not above lying in court in an effort to get their desired result, so why not protect your client for the unfortunate possibility that their behavior prevails?

Also, sure, it’s only $1M this year and $2M next in free cap space, but that could make the difference in getting a deal done on Chandler Jones, Dontae Hightower, etc…

  3. Brady . . . “earns it” every year.

There are many QBs in the league that are making significantly more money than TB that haven’t done anything. Not just Osweiler, but guys like Ryan, Cutler, Romo and Tannehill.

  4. He is now the oldest non-kicker in the NFL. Amazing the beating he took against the Broncos and he just kept getting up after every hit.

  5. That’s still 235,941.17 too much for doing NOTHING wrong!!!
NFL farce!!! Give back the picks/fines & apologize!!!!!
Anything else is just s travesty!!!

  6. And the Patriots continue to play chess while the NFL continues playing checkers.

Keep hating the Patriots, what happened to the Chiefs yesterday can be your team next.

  7. And Roger “I Don’t Understand 9th Grade Chemistry” Goodell makes over $40 million a year with the worst job performance I’ve ever seen this side of a blimp crash. Release the ball measurements, clowns!

Wow, it really hurts to see Tom wearing all those rings, huh?

  9. Amazing to see someone take so much less than he’s worth. He knows it takes a team to win and he only wants hardware. Commendable and rare. E.g., Joe Flacco…and pretty much every free agent who leaves a winner to chase the bucks.

  10. As long as never gets any other compensation from the team/ownership/etc, so be it if he wants to be underpaid. But eyes should be on his finances after he retires…

  11. I always tell my kids that cheating doesn’t pay. I now stand corrected, it does pay and it does pay handsomely.

With one caveat however, it only pays when you work for an organization that has a vested interest in cheating themselves. Then its a partnership made in…. well, I guess New England since heaven doesn’t allow cheating.

It’s funny how the typical Patriot Hater tends to posts fantasies like this when it comes to Tom Brady.

Hey I won’t judge. 🙂 To each their own. 🙂

  13. Brady knows the importance of having a reasonable cap number so there can actually be a team, not just a bunch of scrubs. Look at the Ravens – Flacco gets his HUGE amount of money and all of a sudden Baltimore is terrible. Championships > Money.

Brady the cheater gets suspended 4 games.

After Brady wins this case there’s going to be a lot of salty Patriot Haters out there in about a month or so. I can’t wait to read their tear filled posts.

    🙂

  15. It’s funny how things can change in just a few days. Last week, in the aftermath of the reported beatdown Tom Brady’s side took in the appeal hearing, fear and despair stalked the land (as they once put it on “Blackadder“) like two great … stalking … things.

But now there is a growing chorus of legal analysts like Daniel Wallach, Stephanie Stradley and New York Law School professor Robert Blecker who are saying after review of the transcripts, the ruling on the hearing is reversed. Touchdown: Brady. In fact, they’re going one step further. And it’s great news for fans of the Patriots as well as truth and justice.

The experts are saying NFL attorney Paul Clement flat-out lied to the judges. Repeatedly.

  16. Sounds like someone knows he’s guilty so he is limiting the finacial impact on the inevitable suspension #noclass

  17. Amazing the beating he took against the Broncos and he just kept getting up after every hit.

And there’s a good reason why guys like Justin Tuck and Michael Bennett have said Brady is or is among the toughest QBs out there.

  18. Worth every single cent of this deal and if you doubled it he’d still be worth every cent of that too.

That $22m salary will never see the light of day.

Good move too, so that if he does have to lose 4 game checks its pocket change for him now.

The greatest QB of all time just got paid for real.

  19. The experts are saying NFL attorney Paul Clement flat-out lied to the judges.

    Goodell trained him well.

  20. “He is now the oldest non-kicker in the NFL. Amazing the beating he took against the Broncos and he just kept getting up after every hit.”

Yet morons here who couldn’t take a single one of those hits and not end up in the hospital call him girls names as if Brady isn’t 1000x tougher than they are.

  21. Even after losing (again) to a broken old man, delusional Pats fans seem to think their hometown cheaters are the best team in the league. It really is funny, until you realize how sad it is that a once proud region like New England has fallen so far.

  22. TB12RALLYCRY??…. Did your little sister help with that name ??…. Aaahhh New England the soon to wasteland of the NFL

Let me guess, you first started saying that in 2008, amiright?

How’s that worked out for you so far?

  26. Look, not a Patriots fan BUT I’m looking at this objectively.

Kudos to the Pats & Brady for reworking the contract the way they did. IF (and it’s a BIG IF) things come down the Pike and he gets suspended, then this protects him financially.

In my view the Pats & Brady are being proactive.

It’s easy for others to conflate this as the Pats & Brady admitting guilt. … It’s not. It’s simply being proactive.

One last point…. If you were handed a check for $28M, don’t you think the return on that would quickly make up for what you potentially could lose? $250k. ($15m after taxes at a conservative 5% return would net of $750k).

This is a win for the Pats & Brady.

  27. Whatjusthapped says he teaches his kids not to cheat, now he needs to teach them about the Laws of physics so they understand cold weather causes pressure to drop. You know like when the low tire pressure comes on when it is cold outside.!

I like the way Brady gives back to the team to remain more competitive as well,. But let’s be really honest. His wife makes 50 Million +/- per year as a supermodel. He could play for free, and still make more than any other player in the NFL I wish mt QB had it so good, but Brady’s situation is a huge benefit for the Patriots.

  30. A buffalo fan makes a negative comment on 4 time Super Bowl Champion Tom Brady! As my 96 year old Aunt says “that”s rich”
When was Buffalo’s last Super Bowl Win??? What year?????

  31. I don’t really have a dog in this fight, but the only group of posters I’ve seen behave as childishly as the Patriots’ haters are the Patriots’ fanboys.

Brady is a fantastic, all-time great QB, but the notion that nobody can beat the Pats without the league’s help is silly. The Pats have won one Super Bowl in the last 12 years. So, great as they have been during that stretch, there has been, in all but one instance, someone who knocked them off. And they’ll be there near the end next year, and we’ll see if the Chiefs or Cardinals or whoever can knock them off. That’s what makes the game fun.

Brady is all-world, and the Pats have been the best team in the league for the last 15 years. But they still lose just like everyone else does.

  32. Tammy is getting paid under the table by sleezebag Kraft , one stipulation is that Kraft cover all costs of his weekly hair plug treatments and to pay off the doctors to remain anonymous on the procedure to hide it from the media as if it isn’t obvious enough. Shows how fake Tammy is in every aspect

  33. When is this guy going to retire? Not only is he one of the best QBs of all time, he’s lasted forever and he basically plays for free all things considered so he doesn’t even strain the cap. Unreal.

I guess true Patriots fans deserved a golden era in franchise history like this after a couple of decades of futility but hasn’t it gone on long enough? Give the Bills a chance here… It’s just gotten ridiculous.

I don’t have the visceral hate for Brady that most non-Pats fans do, nothing but respect really, but my god I just can’t wait until this guy retires.

  35. Cheater bleater sheep just make me laugh because every time they show how much they don’t know.

There was no cheating. Look to the Jets game where balls were over-inflated. This game was about 6 months after the “deflator” text.

After this game, the texts turned angry against Brady. Because Brady blew up at the guys who take care of the balls. Brady also had them print out copies of the ball pressure rules to present to the refs before games.

If they were already cheating with a ball deflation program, why would these actions be taken after the fact?

And in the transcript of Bradys appeal with Goodell, when this game came up and Brady said it was a home game – Roger was incredulous – asking “That was a home game?”

Don’t just look at the headlines, look at the time line.

  36. Brady is smart.

Brock Osweiler and Joe Flacco are going to be a pin cushions for defenses as they won’t have the money to sink into other positions…

  37. I’m not surprised they restructured in an effort to mitigate financial loss when he’s suspended. It’s a natural course of action for those that swim the waters of corruption. Pats fans talk about a legacy, but what’s inescapable is the confirmed cheating that the team has been exposed engaging in for almost all of Bill and Tom’s careers.

  38. Osweiler should make more than Brady, Osweiler is 1-0 against Brady and has more upside.

When confronted or asked to provide proof, you’ll say Spygate. That was 8 years ago and happened in the first game of that season. To this day, recording defensive signals is not illegal.

What else is confirmed? Deflategate? Please – that ship has sailed and anyone with a half a brain knows it. So again, for the 15+ years of BB and TB, please provide proof of what has been “confirmed”?

  51. Florio keeps implying that Brady’s motivation for restructure was because he wants to save 2 mil in case he gets suspended. Brady’s worth 120 mil. Him and his wife are worth half a billion. That’s with a B. Brady will probably make more money after FB than he did while playing. He ain’t sweatin’ 2 mil on a suspension that, IMO, he’ll never serve.

Same mistake many teams make thinking short term and getting big name guys in to draw crowds when long term revenues would increase exponentially if the team could put together some winning seasons.

  64. He’s not going to be “slapped with” anything. The rules don’t apply to the Patriots and especially Golden Boy.

    strummer174,
Well thought out and presented comment. I’m a Patriots fan and enjoy watching them play every year. And you are correct. Even if the Patriots dominate their conference every year, there are still teams that beat them every year. And that’s part of what makes the game enjoyable: there are no guarantees.
One aspect that I appreciate about the Patriots is that you rarely see Brady of Belichick complain or blame anyone else when they lose. Instead, they look at it as another opportunity to learn, to get better. And they do. Will they ever win 5 superbowls in a row or something crazy like that? No. But there will be a high possibility that they will be in the superbowl on any given opening day for five years in a row. Not many teams can make that claim.

  69. beachsidejames says:Mar 10, 2016 10:23 AM

Team sport. Brady never beat Manning and vice versa.

  70. Good for Brady and the Pats. A smart, savvy, legal move. And sticks it in serial liar Goodell’s face. Goodell doesn’t even know the meaning of smart, savvy, or legal.

  71. Haters… What’s Brady’s salary have to do with you? How much are your own QBs making? If you are happy with yours why are you bitching about Brady’s? Do you feel cheated… by your own QBs?
    1 mil base salary. LOL!
Rodger will just have to increase penalties on other teams.

  72. “i’ve heard second hand about doug flutie being amazed when he got there that the plays were being piped into his helmet warning brady what was coming…..we’ve tried to talk to flutie on our radio show about it but he hangs up on my producer” – Dan Lebatard discussing the Flutie story from John Saunders of ESPN 🙂

  73. A guy met a friend of Flutie’s at a wedding, who jokingly told that helmet story. Flutie wasn’t there. That’s how this nonsense gets started. If Flutie hung up on LeBetard’s producers, it’s probably because he’s a nobody that Flutie never heard of. LeBetard never mentioned it again.

If you want the true story, read ‘Spygate; the Untold Story’. Pick it up at a yard sale near you. If you’re lucky, they’ll have a book about Bigfoot and alien abductions. 3 for a buck. They pay you. After all, inquiring minds want to know.

  74. Takes less money because he knows it’s the only team he would start on.

This is the perfect illustration of the utterly unconscionable delusion that comes out from the Patriots Hater crowd. I’m not sure why other Pats fans even get mad or try to argue with these people. They clearly have no clue about football and believe literal fairy tales about what they think goes on. It is really, really sad to see American citizens act like babies.

Wahhh they beat us every year, they’re such cheaters!!

  75. Tom is The Man. Everyone should have a chance to have a Tom Brady as their teams QB at least once.

On an unrelated note, I’ve long been disabused of ESPN, and have finally cut the connection to anything that has ties them. I’m tired of the “political correctness” ideology being forced on me through of all things, my SPORTS NEWS. It started with the media created drama over Spygate, got worse with Bullygate and Bountygate, and hit a new low with Deflategate. They completely lost me when they bypassed 19 year old Lauren Hill of Mount St Josephs basketball team and gave their Sports “Courage” award to Bruce Jenner for cutting off his genitals, inserting silicon breasts, taking female hormones, shaving himself down, and wearing a skirt. Lauren Hill had inoperable brain cancer and knew she would not survive, but scored the first and last points of the season and used her situation to raised over 1 million dollars for cancer research. ESPN made this choice in exchange for rights to Diane Sawyers exclusive interview with Jenner, so they could stick this our faces even more. ESPN is a Disney company. Walt Disney must be having seizures in his grave. ESPN is a sick, PC Correct Big Money Media organization with no values beyond clicks and eyeballs. I made myself an HD antenna (you can buy one) and get all the free local HD channels. The picture quality is surprisingly good. Better than the standard cable I had. I added Internet streaming services, and I can hand pick what I want. I now watch only things that actually interest me, and I use the time saved from surfing 100 channels of nothing to do some reading, which has great benefits for the brain. The best part is I get the satisfaction of knowing that I am not subscribing to a service that pays ESPN royalties from my fees, regardless of whether I actually watch ESPN. I have voted with my feet! I suggest you do too!

  76. Fins got same prize the Patriots got after getting their butt kicked by the Fins and Broncos. Zip.

  77. Even a Manning with no arm beat Tom Brady. That’s what really stands out even more than the cheating. He could never beat the Mannings.

  78. A team with a 40 year old QB and NOBODY as a back up, no running back, 2 munchkins for receivers and one really good meat head receiver that the team refuses to pay. No shades needed for that future.

  79. worth it. team doesn’t win every game, but no one has ever been as tough in so many big games. by any objective analysis the best ever and it ain’t close.
