Cornerback Marcus Sherels took a visit with the Jets after free agency opened, but he won’t be taking his talents to New Jersey for the 2016 season.

On Friday night, Sherels confirmed that he’s re-signing with the Vikings on a two-year deal.

“I’m really happy to be staying,” Sherels told Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press. “This is a great organization and it’s a lot of fun playing here. I’m excited to get back to work.”

The move allows Sherels to remain in the state he’s always called home. Sherels went to high school in Rochester, Minnesota, went to college at the University of Minnesota and has spent his entire NFL career with the Vikings. It will also allow the Vikings to hold onto a strong punt returner who has filled in on defense as a backup at various points during his six-year career.
