Dwayne Bowe is still a Brown

With all the departures from Cleveland this week, one that hasn’t happened continues to stick out like the proverbial sore thumb.

Receiver Dwayne Bowe continues to be a member of the roster.

It’s a surprise on the surface, given how little Bowe gave the Browns in exchange for the $9 million guaranteed he received when signing a year ago. What’s likely holding Bowe in place is a fully-guaranteed salary of $2.85 million for 2016.

The real question is whether the Browns would pay another $3.3 million on top of the guaranteed amount for another chance to see what Bowe can do.

What he did in 2015 was catch five passes for 53 yards. For the entire season.

The only plausible explanation for Bowe’s ongoing presence on the roster is that the Browns hope someone else will call up and offer something for him in draft. After all, the Browns thought it would be a good idea to sign Bowe a year ago; maybe someone else will think it’s a good idea to trade for him in 2016.

  1. I don’t know what’s going on in Cleveland. They have all kinds of cap room and seem to letting good players walk.
I know it’s a weak market for WR’s and even in the draft
but do they really think they’ll get something trade wise
for Dwayne Bowe? If I’m not mistaken, this guy hasn’t caught a TD pass since 2013! :/

  2. I can’t imagine a team going after him, there were WRs with more productive plays than he had a season… and they didn’t cost nearly as much. It looks like the Browns are hoping for the “In Case of Emergency, Cleveland” glass to be broken.

They hung on to Manziel in case a team was feeling frisky a few days after the opening of FA. I am guessing Bowe will be the same with the lack of WRs in FA and Draft. Maybe they are hoping a team like the Vikings whom have depth issues at WR will call them up.

  3. If he has no dated roster bonus upcoming what is the harm in the Browns waiting for their new coaching staff to evaluate him in OTA’s and Training Camp.

They are paying him anyway at least see if he can rebound. They are not in dire need for cap space.

You’re right. They’re not in dire need of cap space but….
Dwayne Bowe has a base salary of $6.15 million and is still owed $1.75 million of his signing bonus plus a $100K workout bonus. His upside is limited, even in a new offense. They let Travis Benjamin walk, who signed a 4 year, $24 million contract.

As far as “Hue’s offense”, he was spoiled in Cincinnati.
He had A.J. Green as a #1 WR. Marvin Jones as a #2 WR,
Mo Sanu as a #3 WR, Tyler Eifert at TE and Jeremy Hill and Gio Bernard in the back field. Jones was the #2 WR but the 3rd option in the passing game. Sanu was the 5th option in the passing game. Gio had 49 catches for 472 yards and Sanu 33 catches for 394 yards.

  5. The first game I watched with Bowe in it, I saw him drop 3 or 4 passes I believe he should have caught. They were talking about him as a premier receiver, I didn’t think so. Still don’t.

  6. That is pathetic. I really think that the new ownership of the Browns is really trying to bury them so they can move them to a bigger city. You can’t be this bad of s business man can u

  7. I don’t know why D-Bowe fell out of favor in Cleveland, but he was a solid player in KC.
He was a two time Pro-bowler with the Chiefs.
I still think he is an underrated possession receiver, he can get those yards underneath zone coverages.
Bowe is past his prime, and is no longer a serious threat to beat man coverage’s or go for double digits in receptions or get Madden like yard totals; however he is a solid player that will help your team move the sticks.

    Good luck, Dwayne

Wouldn’t be crushed if he somehow came back to KC.

    What happened to this guy?

My thoughts exactly. He was such a great all-around receiver. Go back just a few years you’d guess he’d be top five in the league before you’d expect him to be in this position.

  9. What happen to him???? Ummm…. Lets see? Oh, yeah! He got old and he was never very fast to begin with. I remember Jerry Rice being so great a few years ago… why haven’t the Browns signed him. What is going on in Cleveland???

  10. I’m a long time Chiefs Fan and Bowe is lazy and a me, me, me guy and he is getting old and slow, even though he lost some weight in 2014 when still with the Chiefs (to help him get some speed back) all the KCStar sports writers said he looked slow compared to other Chiefs WR’s and in 2014 his production tanked and so they cut him and got Maclin.

I was shocked and stupified that the Browns or anyone would pick him up but even with the Browns his production was almost nil.

  11. Cleveland don’t sweat it !! We got our boyz josh gordon and Gary barnidge ! Let’s get it cleveland !!!
ALSO we got rid of the clown manziel ! This off season ain’t to bad. My dude meder got signed again ! Cleveland will be 9 and 7 this year don’t doubt me 😉

Swap the Browns for the Rams. Cleveland deserves better. LA deserves 0-16 seasons.

There are probably some old Cleveland Rams fans haunted by that statement.

  13. In defense of Bowe it’s hard to catch passes from the sidelines or without the ball being thrown to you in the first place for you to catch it. He was injured for a lot of the season and even if he wasn’t he wasn’t even a starter and was only targeted 12 times the entire season when he did get in. This article acts like he was the #1 receiver and not fifth on the depth chart. In that case I didn’t do much for the team either.

Josh Gordon was a draft bust too until someone actually made the decision to maybe throw him the ball.

  14. I don’t know about these Browns, seems sort of suspicious like a Vince Russo in WCW, like tanking the organization on purpose, I wonder if there’s something deeper to this story than just mere incompetence …

  15. This fits in nicely with letting all their top offensive linemen get away.

It’s just the Browns way of being 100% certain that whoever their new quarterback is he will have absolutely zero chance of succeeding.

The Factory of Sadness keeps humming along.

Does anyone really brief Hue Jackson can turn this mess around? I don’t
He was in the process of turning the Raiders around before his mouth got in the way. If he could turn that dumpster fire around, he can probably do the same in Cleveland. IF he keeps his mouth shut.

  17. The Browns should keep this chump and only use him for practice. Then, make him inactive on game day but also make him sit on the bench in street clothes in full view of everyone. What would they be losing by benching this turd? After all, he caught an amazing 5 stinking passes last season!

  18. Remember when Bowe was a rookie and had all the rookie WR stats but finished 2nd in ROTY to some guy named Adrian Petersen?
Or maybe when he was over a 1k yds receiving for 3 of the next 4 years?
Or maybe when he led the league for WR TDs back in 2010?
I think KC fans were right on target.
Then Bowe got paid and got lazy which is why they let him go.
