Chris Johnson visiting the Dolphins after they miss out on C.J. Anderson

AP

The Dolphins couldn’t land C.J. Anderson, so they moved down to the next name on their running back list.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Dolphins have Cardinals free agent Chris Johnson in for a visit today.

Johnson was a solid addition for the Cardinals last year, rushing for 814 yards in 11 games there. And by averaging 4.2 yards per carry at 30 years old, he’s shown there’s still enough left in the tank to help a good team.

The Dolphins lost Lamar Miller in free agency, and then saw the Broncos match their RFA offer sheet to Anderson, so they’re clearly down to Plan C.

But there was sufficient interest in Johnson that they obviously figured they needed to make a move quickly.

  1. I hope they don’t pay him more than $2 mil per year. I like the idea of him and Ajayi, but he has a lot of tread on the tires.

  2. Don’t. On a real good team like Arizona made sense, on a craptastic team like Miami…

Ajayi looked real promising last year…find another young (aka inexpensive) player in the draft to team with Jay and go to town.

  3. Please, no. I never liked that guy and now he is over 30. His speed will decline soon if it already hasn’t, does not break tackles, and the offensive line does not seem good enough to effectively use him even if his skills remain.

Miami needs a wrecking ball that is good on short yardage and can make his own holes when needed. A Jerome Bettis or MJD kind of RB, if you will. Moreno filled that role but he was brittle. I like Ajayi but the jury is still out on whether he can carry the load all season. I doubt it. Miami seems like a committee approach would be more effective than a feature back.

  4. As a Cardinals season ticket holder I DO NOT WANT TO LOSE CJ!!! He was the BEST RB the Cards have had in years. He made plays when other RB’s in the past would fall down. I love having his speed matched with David Johnson.

  5. Get a stop gap RB this year and try to get Dalvin Cook or Leonard Fournette in next years draft.

Both of those guys will be studs in the league for a long time

He did well because Az has a good offensive line. Miami has no offensive Line

MILLER averaged over 4.5 yds per carry with Miami’s line last year and at age 30 Johnson is as fast if not faster than Miller. To say Miami has no line is a bit overstated. They have Pouncey,Albert, and Juwan James was out almost the entire season. They have already added depth to Oline this offseason and there is plenty of time to fix the Guard position. It is puzzling why they haven’t done so already. Hopefully they use the 4.5 million saved on Anderson and get a starting quality guard.

  8. cowboys should’ve scooped him up when they had the chance…..yet again poor front office work

  9. Pouncey is the most over rated center in the NFL. Brandon Albert is toast. James is decent. Dallas Thomas is the worst fuse in the NFL and Tirner is right behind him. You trying to compare a young Lamar Miller to Johnson? Dillusional Miami had their RB Tannenbaum let him walk

  10. I came to despise CJ as a player when he was a Titan, because he played the last several seasons there heartless and selfish. That said, whether it was moving on from a grudge against Tennessee’s front office, surviving getting shot, or whatever, he was a different player in Arizona last season. He ran with more determination than he’s shown in years. If I was a Cardinals fan, I’d hate to lose him.

  11. Besides Miamis usual tough AFCE opponents , you guys are going against 3 of the best defenses in football this year in the MFC West. Not a fan of any of them but rest assured, Miami better get guards that are not turnstiles. No Bushrod is not going to help the cause good back up but it ends there. He has been horrible in Chicago

The Dolphins are better off with Lamont Miller. They don’t need Chris Johnson.

Hmm Lamont Miller? Is he a rookie? He must be a new rb I have never seen before. I’ll have to check him out.

  13. I’m not keen on signing CJ0.5K- he’s been on a decline for years. I’d rather get someone in the draft.

  14. Hope I don’t hear yet another “The Dolphins have announced they have concluded their visit with ____, who has left without a contract.”

I really like Ajayi, but Miami needs RB depth pretty badly. Just sign this dude and make it happen. Gase I’m sure can find a way to incorporate him into his playcalling.

  15. How are CJ or CJ better than home-grown Lamar Miller? Once again, the Dolphins are screw-ups!

  16. CJ2k in Miami? Um he’d last an off season before he got into trouble down there …

I think he meant “Lamar” Miller…..and he already left the team…..

  18. Arizona should try to keep Johnson and Johnson together. Maybe he’s looking for more playing time if David is destined to be the “bell cow,” but I figure any team he signs with is going to draft or add another RB somewhere and have at least 2 guys with significant touches. I like the way he bounced back, but I can’t see any team giving him 250+ carries and expecting him to be the featured back for 16 games.

  19. I know Florida is were oldies go to retire and Miami is just underlining that fact. Getting shot of all our young draftees for has beens because of terrible recruitment in the past. Great !

  20. ever since cj got a big contract with Titans, he hasn’t run jack. Then there was a stint with the cards, that didn’t go well either. tell me about motivation, man.

I don’t see anything stating that Johnson is better than Miller. But as a short term solution he would work well especially when you consider Miami has Ajai and they want to see what he can do. Also, Miami cabn probably get CJ on a 2 year 7 million dollar deal as opposed to the 6.5 million per year deal that Miller just scored.

His stint with the Cards was fine. 814 yards in 11 games is not bad — that’s a 1200 yard pace, had he not broken his leg.

He seems better fit for Miami – over the age of thirty with those other geriatrics to pal around with in south beach.”

Get a clue, the Dolphins have one of the youngest teams in the NFL.

It’s Lamar not Lamont and in case you missed it, that train has already left the station.

  25. Can he block well…Tanny needs extra exp Rb that can do both, if not CJ than heck yeah, grab up ray rice…his come back could be like ricky. ….run..run…run..

  26. while Tannenbaum sits & ponders how to blow the upcoming draft…good solid value players keep leaving with just an interview…like that”swing & a whiff”on Sean Spence -with all of Ross’s money, I wish he’d QUIT playin pocket pool & get some of these value guys….

  27. AZ had a good O-Line and now has an AWESOME o-line. Go to Miami for a tad more money or stay in AZ and not get broken but get a Super Bowl ring. Which is his priority? $ or a ring?

What did they ever do with No-Show Moreno?
    .
I heard someone said he looked to be in shape. But nothing on him wanting to play.

  29. I saw something revised putting Miller at 7M$ per year.

RB should not be picked till late round. Next years draft will be better for RB. They should be going defense in draft early. But not getting OL is making them also look for it early.(yet again)
