As Browns make changes, Josh Gordon wonders who’s next

AP

The new regime in Cleveland has made no secret that it wants to dramatically overhaul the roster, and suspended receiver Josh Gordon is wondering if he’ll be back.

In an apparent response to the departures of quarterback Johnny Manziel, receiver Dwayne Bowe, receiver Travis Benjamin, linebacker Karlos Dansby, center Alex Mack, right tackle Mitchell Schwartz, special teamer Johnson Bademosi and safety Tashaun Gipson, Gordon took to Twitter to acknowledge that he’s noticed.

“Can’t help but wonder who’s next,” Gordon wrote.

Gordon is currently suspended for violations of the NFL’s substance-abuse policy, but he has applied for reinstatement. If he is reinstated, he instantly becomes the Browns’ best offensive playmaker, and maybe their most talented player at any position.

But that’s only if the Browns want him back. As a team that has made changes across the board, it’s possible that Gordon will be one more change, and that as soon as he’s reinstated, the Browns will look to trade him away.

  1. Look in the mirror Josh. That’s who is next. I dont know why he would care anyway he is only technically part of the team after not playing for most of 2 years.

  2. Just because the Browns are getting rid of some older players doesnt mean they are going to give away every good player they have, even the young ones.

    Does it???

  3. On the one hand, you don’t want to trade away the best offensive threat that you have. On the other hand, you aren’t seeing value out of a guy that can’t stay on the field. If you can get a high pick or a couple good mid rounders, it can only help the rebuild efforts. Josh Gordon is good, but he isn’t a guy you build a team around.

  4. Here’s a suggestion, Josh; go ahead and THINK about who’s next if you want to, but don’t go public with it. Keep your head down and your mouth shut. You aren’t even reinstated yet, and I don’t think the team is even allowed to talk to you, so you don’t know what they’re thinking. You’ve made enough mistakes to get yourself to a years suspension, and now you’re trying to come back. Don’t blow it by even hinting that you might cause trouble. If they want you, they’ll let you know. If they’re going to trade you or release you, they’ll let you know that, too. Personally, I hope they keep you, find a QB and you become a Hall of Famer in a Brown’s uniform. So please, don’t mess it up before you even get a (another) chance.

  5. The Browns are doing the right thing… Now, they just need to stick with a Coach/GM long enough for these changes to have a real impact and them to actually BUILD a winner.

  6. Sashi Brown says Browns have a roster spot for Josh Gordon

  7. The Browns will fire the head coach next year so whats it matter anyway. The browns should apologize to the fans for decades of mismanagement and terrible decisions.

  8. I hope he can get it together and stay on the field. I’m not a Browns fan, but he’s awesome to watch when he plays. He’s got a lot of talent and it would be terrible if he wound up out of the league because he has a drug problem.

  9. Gordon is coming off of a year long suspension. Odds are that he will slip up again within a year or two. No one knows what kind of game shape he is in.

Translation = the Clowns would be lucky to get a conditional 2017 5th thru 7th round pick for him

  10. With all the suspensions, the Browns haven’t had to pay him much money in the past. I think when they spin their analytics wheel, he’ll be kept around.

  11. The Browns need as much talent as the can get. Give Josh Gordon a chance. If I want to see a bunch of second rate college football players, I will watch Baldwin Wallace play Wittenburg University. I tired of looking at low round draft picks and Un-drafted free agent populate this Browns roster. No more 5 year plans . We need a winning team in less than two years. I have spent tons of money on season tickets for the last 16 years and I want the days of Brown, Morin, Ryan, Collins, Sipe, Newsome, Kosar and Matthews to return before I turn to old to care.

  12. Josh Gordon is a fine young man, and I wish everyone would just leave him alone.

    Justin Blackmon

  13. The Browns need to do what the Raiders did a few yrs ago – Wash the stink off. They purged the roster of losers and completely started over by building through the draft and plugging in quality free agents to mentor the younger guys. Now they have a VERY talented team, on both sides of the ball. They may not be superbowl contenders (I think they have a totally legit shot), but you can’t find one single “loser” on the team anymore AND they have a near-flawless balance sheet as well. It’s taken 3 full yrs of rebuilding, but they’re finally there….

  14. This is wishful thinking on Gordon’s part. Talent trumps character in the business of the NFL. He’ll be a Brown until he’s suspended again or he can’t catch the ball.

  15. It would be so Browns of them to get rid of Gordon. Who needs your talented players when you dont care about winning.

    Yet they sign backups/scrubby starters.

The NFL should send the Browns up north to the CFL. Maybe they could win up there

  16. Browns fans always get delusional this time of year. One guy up there actually said that they have a “VERY talented team on both sides of the ball”. It’s been long enough so that they don’t remember the weekly humiliation and there won’t be any competition to dispel the dream of competence that the latest group of wanna be’s are peddling. By the time that Sashi opens the Brown’s purse to get some free agents, there’ll be a couple of long snappers and a drop kicker left.

  17. For a coach that said he wants to take a stand, moving forward with Josh Gordon isn’t in his plans.

  18. Gordon may well be safe since he’s too big a risk for anybody to give up much for. Nobody’s parting with a really good draft pick for him, that’s for sure. And it’s probably a better gamble for Cleveland to hope he straightens up rather than let him go for a mid- to late-round pick.

  19. LOL a suspended player is mocking your team. Yea that’s how bad you’ve gotten. Looks like another 1-2 win season (if that) for Cleveland. I feel horrible for their die hard fans. As a Cards fan I did that for years…it sucks.

  20. In the Browns quest for transforming into an analytical based organization, it was determined by their Harvard-led office, that the addition by subtraction theory is indeed the best methodology for the organization.

    ——-
“…another 1-2 win season…”……..in the history of the Browns dating back to the 1940’s, they have a grand total of ZERO 1 win seasons and a grand total of ONE 2 win season……so, by another, do you mean their first 1 win season in team history or their 2nd 2 win season in approximately 70 seasons of existence??

It’s going to be another rough year for Browns fans, but let’s not let statistics and facts get in the way of “beat on them while they’re down” rhetoric…..

  22. I think Josh Gordon is under contract for only one more year so Browns will want to trade or he walks in free agency with everyone else who can

  23. So many hypocrits! Scream to dump a guy who drinks, was never suspended by the league for drinking, and could potentially be great given a real chance and scream to hold on to a guy who was suspended 3 times by the league and missed almost 2 years because of the suspension. While I hope he doesn’t screwup again, could end up with a permanent ban.

  24. Given Josh Gordon’s track record, he should maybe clamp his mouth closed, keep his head down, and his nose clean.

Has he even officially been reinstated yet?

While I think his suspension was totally bogus given the inconclusive test results, it was upheld, and a stipulation of said ban was that he was not to drink, which he would have known had he cared enough to read the clearly spelled out terms of his suspension.

I definitely want to hold on to him, because one more and no one gets him anyway, but the kid has been a huge screw up to this point, and he needs to worry about himself, not what the team that he MIGHT be playing on this season is doing.

Stay clean and do your job and everything will be fine.
