Cowboys pursuing restricted free agent DE Mayowa

The Cowboys plan to sign restricted free agent defensive end Benson Mayowa to an offer sheet if he passes his physical, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Friday.

Mayowa arrived in Dallas Thursday for a meeting with the Cowboys.

Assuming everything checks out with his physical and Mayowa signs an offer sheet, the Raiders would have five days to match and retain Mayowa. Because the Raiders gave Mayowa the low tender and he’s a former undrafted free agent, the Raiders would receive no compensation if they don’t match.

Mayowa, 24, had 16 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and recorded a safety last season. He’s played in 30 games, started three and recorded two sacks over three seasons, though he only played in two games as a rookie in 2013.

  1. so be it, match it if it makes sense..(with Jerry , you never know) ..but lets see if he signs anything first.

    Go Raiders, Go Reggie!

  2. So the answer for a pass rusher is a Raiders bench player? Only pressure Cowboys get is on their front office every year to get guys who can pressure the qb.

  3. Get him Jerry. From what I have read he is a young, hungry player that seems to get better the more he plays. Dallas needs all the DE help they can get so that their hands are not so tied when it comes to the draft. Who knows Rod Marinelli might be able to turn this kid into a beast.

  4. The Raiders still have lots of room under the cap after signing Kelechi Osemele, Sean Smith, and Bruce Irvin. The Cowboys will only get Mayowa if the Raiders think he’s worth a lot less than the $8.55M for 3 years contract.
His value to the Raiders may partly depend on how DE Mario Edwards is recovering from a neck injury. Reggie McKenzie said on Feb. 2 that Edwards had to undergo a series of tests “in the next month or so”. No news since then.
Mayowa spent some time at LB during practice last season, but I don’t know if he played any downs at LB during actual games. 6-3 240 is a good size for LB, rather light for a DE.

  5. I like it!! Now let’s sign Hardy, Leon Hall, draft a Safety, Linebacker and a true NoseTackle… cut Church and Carr… and we’re good!! I know folks dislike Hardy but with additional pass rush and big DT/NT this defense would be great!!!

  6. Mark should match Jerry’s offer just to stick it to him for putting his two cents in when Mark was looking to relocate to a new stadium.
